Dishwashers -- Miele or Bosch

TalkingTree2 · 07/01/2015 13:44

My old dishwasher has just packed up, and I have around £500 to spend on a new one. For £499 I can get a get Bosch Logixx machine (SMS69L32GB) or if I spend £50 more (once I factor in their cash back scheme) I can get a Miele (G4920BK) from John Lewis. I've never owned anything Miele before, but I know people rave about their build quality and service. Does anyone have any experience of either of these, or any other recommendations? Thanks.

Buy a Miele. Will never regret it. Buy one with a cutlery drawer. Will never regret. Check if your model does but ours has the ability to move top rack up and down to accommodate 30cm plates. I did a very sad happy dance when I found that out.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 07/01/2015 23:28

Our Miele also has the cutlery tray and an adjustable height top rack. The rack tilts too so that one side can be higher than the other to accommodate different height items in the lower basket.

I like the Miele cleaner as well, it really smells good and leaves the inside of the machine sparkling and fresh.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/01/2015 07:45

I could still fit dinner plates and flutes in our dw with a tray, the racks are all adjustable too.

The manufacturers have thought about these things.

Cutlery cleans much better in a tray.

Oooh I have the Miele dishwasher but why didn't I know this!!! Make perfect sense. Thanks Enrique...

I have a Bosch dishwasher which is ok, no comparison to my parents Miele which was running for years before they left it behind.

My dad used to work for Miele and rates them very highly. its worth the extra money, he has repaired some that have been going for over 20 years.

wonkylegs · 08/01/2015 09:21

DustBunny - it was the Smeg that caught fire. It was a year old and we were lucky because we had marble worktop which wasn't very flammable and contained the fire to the dishwasher itself. Luckily my cleaner was there at the time otherwise we may have had a worse outcome than a melted dishwasher & shocked cleaner. Smeg denied it was a problem with the dishwasher and said it was 'misuse' however my dads one (exact same model) did the same thing 300miles away a few months later again they said it was his fault ??

TalkingTree2 · 08/01/2015 11:10

So, I've just ordered a Miele. It's the G 4920SC, which thanks to Fluffy's fantastic link was £578, with another £50 cash back from Miele. That's at least £100 cheaper than anywhere else i could find that sold this model. And its a model with a cutlery tray, which I hadn't realised I needed, but now do, thanks to the recommendation of everyone here!

Many thanks to Fluffy, and to you all for advice. Now I'm waiting excitedly for delivery, and meanwhile doing a lot of washing up by hand.

I am on my second miele dishwasher, the first packed up after 13 years, and the house was tenanted for 3 of these years, so got a lot of hard use. (student sharers)
My parents have Miele, it is nearly 15 years, still going strong. Before that, they also had a Miele.

My sister bought a Bosch. It needed servicing within 2 weeks.

Dont buy from John Lewis, but if you do, dont wast your money on the fitting service. They will NOT be able to fit, they will make a song and dance about all the problems related to your pipework, and you will end up having an emergency plumber call out, which will cost you much more than planning to get the plumber out. The emergency plumber will laugh, and shake his/her head, connect the dishwasher in less than 2 minutes, and bill you for his standard 1 hour of work, plus vat.

Then you get the joy of arguing with John Lewis over a refund for their fitting service. NOT WORTH your trouble.

And breathe.

QuintlessShadows · 08/01/2015 11:16

Oh, X post. Good choice. Good luck.

TalkingTree2 · 08/01/2015 11:24

Phew...very pleased I listened to the collective wisdom of MN and didn't buy from John Lewis. Now I'm hoping my delivery and fitting works out well. I'll let you know!

Our 13 YO Hotpoint DW died a few months ago.

I replaced it with the cheapest Bosch sold by Curry's (230 after a cashback deal). With hindsight, I would have paid 40 extra for the next model up that had a couple more programmes and a 'time left' indicator. What extras do the DWs costing twice as much offer? Ours is A or A+ for all the ratings that they do the AAA thing for.

I bought it from Curry's because they would deliver next day and John Lewis would have taken a week to deliver it and were more expensive.

I have never bought anything from John Lewis can't work out what makes them so special. I've since heard good things about www.ao.com and will look at them next time I need household appliances.

OnIlkleyMoorBahTwat · 08/01/2015 11:32

Oh, cross post with a few others who don't worship at the shining alter that is John Lewis.

DP fitted our dishwasher by reconnecting the water pipe, pushing it into the hole made by the old one and plugging it in. If you are replacing rather than buying for the first time and don't have any disabilities, I don't see the need to pay for a 'fitting service' Confused.

I could have done it myself but it was delivered when I was at work and he wanted to deal the mountain of washing up that had built up in the two days we were without a dishwasher.

murphys · 08/01/2015 13:42

Congrats Talking, you will not regret this purchase.

Your one looks just like mine (mine is the 5620 in clean steel), the front looks a little different, the buttons are differently placed but the inside in exactly the same. Mine pops open after a load is done, which I didn't expect, so I got a bit of a surprize when the load ended and the door opened so gracefully on its own... Grin.

Plumbing was very straightforward, we had a different dw prior to this one, the only thing was that dh had to cut the hole in the cupboard under the sink a bit wider as that grey plastic filter looking thing there is name for it I am sure is bigger on the Miele. Apart from that it took about 5 minutes.

It took me a little while to get used to arranging what goes where, now I have a place for everything, (big plates to right stacker, small to left, pots at back etc, but without the basket in the way, there is so much more room to get things in. I love the cutlery tray. If you lay all the spoons, knives etc together, its so quick and easy to put them away as you can really just grab them all together.

I have not yet rewashed a single item. My previous dw I had to rewash things all the time. And I had 2 x LG's and 1 x Kenwood previously.

SoupDragon · 08/01/2015 13:46

Be prepare not to fall in love with the cutlery tray immediately. It's taken me a couple of months really. I still have a few niggles but I'm getting used to it.

PeoniesforMissAnnersley · 08/01/2015 14:38

I have a Miele but not the one with the cutlery tray and of course it will never die and so I will never have the cutlery tray! Sad

DustBunnyFarmer · 08/01/2015 19:30

Checks carefully to make sure Quintless is not my alternative nickname.<

I am most definitely NOT feeling the John Lewis love for the same reason. Would never buy an electrical appliance from them again.

Norfolkandchance1234 · 09/01/2015 01:21

I love my Bosch appliances but Miele are the best so for £50 more I'd definitely get that.

TalkingTree2 · 27/01/2015 10:33

I thought I'd update on the dishwasher saga.

I ordered the Miele G 4920 SC via the link above, and got a confirmation. After a couple of days I received an email from the shop saying they did not after all have it in store and they did not think they could get it before the end of January. I was slightly irritated but had been putting all 4 of my dc to work on washing and drying up duty, and thought that this was quite good for them to do for a while.

However, a week or so later I got another email from the shop saying they now couldn't guarantee they would get the Miele I wanted at all, and anyway it no longer had the £50 cash back offer.

So, I cancelled the order, looked at all my options and thought for a bit. I was so sold on the Miele brand, and the cutlery tray that I ordered it through ao.com, for about £100 more. They delivered it two days later, and I've now plumbed it in (very easy to do) and it works beautifully.

I am very pleased with it, I am trying not to think too hard about the expense, and keep telling myself that it will still be going strong in 20 years time and is therefore worth every penny.

But the weird thing is that all my children (aged 9-16) pulled faces and said they had been enjoying doing the washing up after supper every night. They had been putting the music on loud, taking it in turns to wash, dry and put away, and had an enjoyable 'together' 15 minutes each evening. Who would have guessed! And yes, I know it would not have been nearly as enjoyable for them if they knew it was a permanent arrangement, but still, it was an unexpected few moments of family harmony.

TranquilityofSolitude · 27/01/2015 10:38

Quick, find another job for the children to do at the same time!

My parents replaced their Miele last year when it developed a leak. They bought it in 1984!

brunette123 · 27/01/2015 10:48

Glad you are happy with your Miele and how lovely that your children enjoyed their 15 minutes!
I have a top of the range Bosch with a cutlery tray and have to say that I am not in love with the tray - previously had a Bosch with a basket (the basket had separate slots for cutlery) and found things dried better in the basket - I find that my teaspoons do not dry in the cutlery tray - they are laid sideways but there is always a bit of water in the middle of them and I end up having to get a tea towel out - sadly my old basket does not fit in the my new machine. I have had it for over a year and think I would have fallen in love with the tray by now if I was going to. It washes fine and previous Bosch lasted over 13 years.

DramaAlpaca · 27/01/2015 11:00

Aw, that's lovely, your DC bonding over washing the dishes Smile

Glad you've found a dishwasher you're happy with. With four DC it'll get lots of use & as it's a Miele it should last forever.

shovetheholly · 27/01/2015 13:32

I have a Bosch and I don't like the design. I realise this is controversial as they have good reviews.

Here's the problem: when you pull out the lower rack-drawer to clean out the filter, the parts are really badly designed. There is a bit of plastic shaped kind of like a wishbone that simply does not want to stay in place. You have to spend ages getting the filter back in!

inconceivableme · 27/01/2015 17:55

Look at Blomberg by Euronics. Comparable quality to Bosch, great warranty length and cheaper. V happy with ours two years in.

MrsMarigold · 27/01/2015 18:02

I used to have a Bosch but I love my Miele and the quick wash is so handy
