I've watched a youtube video with an american woman slinging her clothes out. I don't think any of my clothes bring me joy. I bet I wear about 10% of them.
Part of my clothes problem is I'm such a scruff and I hate shopping I get scared to throw stuff out in case I get invited somewhere that's dressier than B&Q.
I have a dress for 'occasions' but I keep a lot of stuff I don't like 'just in case'. In case of what though?

GatoradeMeBitch · 28/12/2014 20:43

So far I have two binbags full of tops for the clothes bank tomorrow. It's funny, I have a sizeable maybe's pile, and every time I look at it I end up throwing (respectfully of course) the top items into the binbags. I've realized I don't like any of my chunky winter jumpers, so I'm just going to choose two and bag the rest. Then I just have my regular day tops to go through.

I'm excited about the idea of moving my extra storage into a cupboard. I never though of that before. I have a small house and there are things that just get in the way - a shelving unit by the back door, a small bookcase at the top of the stairs, a wheeled trolley in the bathroom and a wheeled drawer in the living room. I think I could put the bookcase inside my son's wardrobe for him to store his computer games in, and put the rest in the big cupboard under the stairs. I'm really looking forward to having more floor space.

GatoradeMeBitch · 28/12/2014 20:44

thought wheeled drawer unit. I wish we could edit posts!

themummyonthebus · 28/12/2014 21:04

Gator do it! We have built in wardrobes without any innards in our new house. We've been umming and ah-ing about what to put in them but couldn't find anything suitable (not deep enough for the ikea standard wardrobe stuff, couldn't find anything we liked or that was robust enough at b&q or the like) when we realised that the ivar we had lying about would fit. Particularly since we'd just have chucked it otherwise. So it's uncluttered the lounge and organised DC's room in one fell swoop!

Konmarie is right as always - the house always provides the storage you need Xmas Smile

Done some sorting of our storage space today while DH watched our 1 year old...have moved all the baby stuff to the back for any potential future babies and brought all the useful stuff and stuff I need to kondo to the front.

Got two large bags to go to charity....and a giant george foreman that someone gave as a present over a year ago..it's unused I wonder if I could take it back to argos and swap it for a smaller one...it's a 10 portion size one. It says it's for "entertaining" which I never do!!

Got lots of empty boxes and suitcases in there too which I want to get rid of, but don't want to do that and be in the position of needing to find/buy storage from somewhere...but they are just getting on my bloody nerves. Every time I go in there I'm chucking boxes and bags out of my way to get to the actual stuff...

Welcome newbies and good luck for a last push before we face 2015!! Think 2015 is going to a be clutter free organised one (hoping)!

Bizkit · 28/12/2014 21:45

I've just done one of my Underbed drawers where I keep night wear, tights, swimwear and just wow!

I didn't realise I had so many pairs of tights, I've folded them all and put them in a shoe box within the drawer so it's easy to grab a pair and have put patterned ones in a zip lock bag with a label and thick ones in a labelled bag also, so I don't have to unravel them all to find what I want (got this idea from a youtube vid), so who knows I may even wear skirts more often which people tell me I should, cos it might not take so much effort.

have ordered everything else and it actually brings me joy to open the drawer and see everything all organised!!

can't wait to move on to the next task but trying to take things gradually don't want to tire myself out too much, back to work and a busy week this week Sad

JKSLtd · 28/12/2014 21:49

Not a big job - but have actually cut up ready for tags all the small Christmas cards.
Always say I'll do it and never do - usually I recycle the cards sometime in February!

Well I figured, if I did it now, I can put them away with the left over wrapping paper & cards in the 'pre-Christmas' box as I've started filling boxes on the landing ready to go back into the loft, hopefully in the next few days.

Also, a good use of my pinking shears that rarely get used!

Violetta999 · 28/12/2014 22:04

Well done for all the progress made today girls. I gave up my two day sort out at 6pm and dived in the bath for a long soak. DH needs to put a couple more hours in to finish the garage but we are both sat here with a nice glass if vino.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 28/12/2014 22:19

I have finally finished clothing for everyone (myself and 2 dc's)I'm amazed at how much space I have created and all the folded things in drawers look so lovely. I've even folded towels and put them in the large drawer under the divan bed, it's so nice to open it up and find a nicely folded towel ready and waiting rather than reaching from my top cupboard shelf and having twenty towels fall on my head every time I take a shower!

Books have already been done as I threatened DH with certain death if he didn't get them all out of my office space by Christmas which means I can now move onto paper work and making my office a lovely work space!

My utility room makes me want to weep but I'm hoping as I move down the categories it will eventually fall into place.

My biggest 'win' over the xmas holidays has been convincing DH that we don't need to keep empty boxes that games consoles/phones/appliances come in and have chucked out loads and all the boxes for dc's new toys were crushed and recycled as soon as the toys were removed on Christmas Day.

Violetta999 · 28/12/2014 22:24

Itis please could you have a word with my DH. He sees every box as essential

iknowimcoming · 28/12/2014 22:29

Evening! Can I join please? Have been avidly reading the book today and I'm feeling positive particularly with regard to getting clothes done, particularly ds and dd before they go back to school. Can anyone advise how to fold pants and tights or is that further on in the book than I am? Not convinced I can make my pants stand up in a rectangle Confused

Pointlessfan · 28/12/2014 22:31

DD has refused to nap today so I've made no progress whatsoever. Hope tomorrow is better, I feel like I'm falling behind you lot!

Justgotosleepnow · 28/12/2014 22:40

This is cool new people are joining in!
I wonder how many people are on the thread?
I wonder when we will each finish kondoing?
I've given myself the target of the summer solstice.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 28/12/2014 22:46

Violetta999 I won the argument by pointing out that half the boxes were for things we actually no longer had! Also told him that if we ever sold it on people will buy it and pay the same without the box and if it breaks we can return it if we keep the receipts we don't need the box. Also I said anything like that would have to go in the loft if he insisted on keeping it and he has always been adamant that lofts are not for storage so he was pretty much backed into a corner!

I did compromise and let him keep the box for his I phone and I pad Hmm but they have been hidden away in his wardrobe where I don't have to look at them

Violetta999 · 28/12/2014 22:47

No idea about folding sorry. Been delaying it until I've got rid of every non beautiful and non useful item. The book has thrown me though because after telling me how to sort clothes, the book then rolled into rolling clothes, which is the last thing I wanted to do!!

Opheliabumps · 28/12/2014 22:50

Ooh can I join too? I'm part way through the book, but not actually kondoed anything yet, although i have stashed my Christmas wrapping paper, tags and bags back in the attic already.

I'm thinking of starting in the kitchen, as I'm less emotionally invested in the saucepans etc., I know I will struggle with clothes especially the ones my late sister bought me, as even though I never wear some of them they do bring me joy as I know how much she loved choosing them for me, which is a joyful memory.

iknowimcoming · 28/12/2014 22:59

Am feeling embarrassingly excited about dds school tights drawer! It never shuts because it's too full yet she can never find a decent pair to wear, I think this may be a thing of the past yay!!

Violetta999 · 28/12/2014 23:03

Itis - great tactic! I must try talking sense to DH - although I need to work on his instruction leaflet pile too!

I recon I will finish the sorting stage in February (including all eBay items) but we have been chucking for a few years if I'm honest. I strongly suspect the clothes rolling will take months and months though as it's totally unnatural for me.

We actually own very little storage and Initially I expected we'd need to buy some. However after decluttering everything has a home! It's very weird and shocking!! My eldest does however need more storage but it's down to an inability to get rid of anything. Anytime I suggest putting things in the charity bag, he laughs and and says a firm no

Violetta999 · 28/12/2014 23:06

Ophelia can you photograph some of the clothes she have you or keep a couple of very special items safely. Must be very difficult and I think you should follow your gut feelings

iknowimcoming · 28/12/2014 23:10

Was going to suggest photographs of the clothes too or if you are or you know someone who is good at seeing can you get something made from the clothes like a quilt or patchwork cushion etc or there are people who make bears etc from clothing on the web, but it's very sensitive so do what you feel is right x
