Hi all, everyone's getting so much done, it's really good to see.

I've jumped ahead from clothes to the kitchen as it was doing whatever the opposite of sparking joy is. I've chucked / redistributed some bits that had no business being in there, but I've only scratched the surface. I might leave it till the weekend so I have a few hours to dedicate to old pots & pans, mismatched tupperware etc. I'm actually looking forward to the prospect!

I also got rid of all our recipe books. They just get all sticky / dusty, and any recipe I might want is online anyway. Such a relief!

Ringinglikebells · 07/01/2015 23:24

Thanks for the suggestions with the curtains, but I really won't get around to sewing anything, I have admitted that to myself after 10 years, so I am going to be honest with myself and take them to a charity shop.

Lots of duvets and sheets out two bin bags, keeping the pretty old fashioned ones, I can't let them go just yet, but there is lots of room on the linen cupboard.

Changed the bed last night, first sheet I pulled out which I had kept. Didn't fit properly and was a bit thin, so out it went, I am becoming ruthless!

Went around a clothes shop today, lots of stuff in the sale, but I wasn't tempted, I felt no 'love' for anything!

My books will be hard, I love books, but, do think that sometimes we keep books because they are what we want to be, or believe we are - books don't define you, so it will be interesting when I come to sort them.

Funny thing happened I was reading my daughter the book we read together last night (10yrs), and when she turned on the Kindle MK was there open, she read the title and said 'ahhhh. So this is why you are getting get rid of all the stuff, you are reading this!" It was a revelation to her!

Revelation to me too!

upandawayy · 07/01/2015 23:58

Has anyone made it alive out the other side of paperwork?! Been through it all and cleared out what needs to go and have shredded it. Now have the remainder to organise and file. It's really dragging me down!

I know there's been talk of odd side effects of this kondoing but both dh and I have noticed that our cats are playing with their toys more. Whether it's because they've rediscovered them in the clearout or they are happier in the house or too comfy in our warm house to go outside in the cold weather and get exercise is hard to say.

GatoradeMeBitch · 08/01/2015 00:00

I've gone a bit like that too! This past week every time something hasn't cooperated my attitude has been 'Ok, thank you, into the charity bag.' DS had better be on his best behaviour Wink

whatsonyourplate · 08/01/2015 03:49

inadaydream take one or two of your dc's draws out into another room before they go to bed so you can sort them while they sleep.

inadaydream · 08/01/2015 07:56

You see that's why I love it on here - I would have never thought to do that! Thank you, fab idea Grin

HermioneGrangerHair · 08/01/2015 08:53

inadaydream so proud of you for kondoing work. It can be so hard to take a step back and ask yourself "What is my time worth?", but you have to do it, or people will take advantage. If people arent paying for the services they expect, they deserve a wake-up call.

Anybody else already finding they have more furniture than they need? I'm starting to look forward to a house with only nice, grown-up furniture, rather than the amazing "storage solutions" I've been relying on forever.

LaurieFairyCake · 08/01/2015 08:58

I freecycled the large dining table. It was huge and chunky oak but I couldn't move it on my own. I hated it plus the leather chairs.

I prefer my much smaller £50 table from Ikea - Dh was like ShockConfused
So I'm moving that one into the dining room and not having a table in the kitchen anymore as it was just used by people to dump stuff !

inadaydream · 08/01/2015 09:35

Aw thanks hermoine I slept like a log last night so has it confirmed I have made the right decision.

And as for spare furniture - not a problem yet but as I go I seem to be emptying tubs with kids toys in! I now have 10 tubs with lids going spare - 6 of them are decorative so my sister wants them for her sons bedroom. The other 4 I will see if school wants them.

Pointlessfan · 08/01/2015 10:20

Ringing, I did that in a clothes shop yesterday too! I'm returning to work soon so I'd gone to buy some smarter trousers. I tried on loads but none of them fitted properly. Pre-Kondo I'd have probably bought some anyway and thought "they'll do for work" but now I only want to buy some that fit well and look nice.
My only concern is what if I can't find any that fit beautifully??

MsBug · 08/01/2015 10:31

Kondo has helped me to work out what clothes to buy, I think. For example I have chucked out all of the low waisted jeans which either fell down or showed off my wobbly belly, depending on how tight they were. So I now know to only buy high waisted ones in future.

Ringinglikebells · 08/01/2015 10:52

pointlessfan

You will - MK would say the right pair will find you!

However, I fear it will be a very expensive, beautiful pair that will bring you joy!

Try going into shops that you 'love', but think perhaps are a bit too expensive, rather than the usual chains. Bet it works!

StuntNun · 08/01/2015 11:13

I have Kondo'd my iPod by removing music that was put on for other people or that I thought I should be listening too. Not clutter as such but definitely had a similar effect on me when I want to listen to music but have to scroll through all the stuff I won't actually listen to.

Tw1nkle · 08/01/2015 11:27

Kondo'd my wardrobe!

One bag for Charity
One Bag for Ebay

Still need to re-kondo once I've lost weight though.....

Tw1nkle · 08/01/2015 11:28

I have sliding mirror doors on my wardrobe, which don't give me joy!
I'd love to be able to open doors so i could see the whole of my wardrobe at the same time!

Anyone else have this issue?

Iqueen · 08/01/2015 11:31

Hermione I definitely have too much furniture - some inherited and some impulse bought, because they were a 'joy' aesthetically! Confused

When I finish kondoing, I'm planning to be ruthless, furniture-wise, and only keep the pieces that bring me lasting joy. Possibly, even some of that may have to go, too.

During my conversion to The Cult, I have frequently thought back to my childhood home and my first married home - there was so little in the house, but I never felt deprived. I'm aiming to get back to that, or as close as possible, in this technological and choice-obese era!

Less STUFF = more time, more space, more JOY! Smile

Iqueen · 08/01/2015 11:35

Well done, StuntNun! Clutter is CLUTTER, even when it is not tangible! Especially when it does not bring joy! Wink

JKSLtd · 08/01/2015 11:38

I've lived with sliding doors before. Never again. Anyway they always came off the runners.

We inherited enormous fitted wardrobes in our bedroom and I would dearly love to get rid of them. I would ideally get fitted again but that actually fit the alcoves and designed better for a post-kondo lifestyle.

Got rid of quite a few furniture bits last year (which was meant to be he year of getting rid!) and am determine d to only acquire joyful and 'through our choice' stuff. Pil are always asking their friends to pass on bits. I think a hangover from our early married life when we had very little.

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 08/01/2015 12:03

I think I've always been a Konvert...it's just been very well hidden. I have been folding carrier bags for years (much to my family's amusement!) and have been showing signs of mk ways but reading the book has helped me get over the bigger clutter issues.

I'm so grateful to have seen the random link on FB and even more grateful there is this thread!!

Day off tomorrow and it will be spent on paperwork.

Inadaydream - I hope I reach the 'work' stage soon...maybe it'll be after paperwork Grin

Pointlessfan · 08/01/2015 16:01

Yes I have sliding doors on the wardrobe with hanging section on one side and shelves/drawers the other. It never bothered me pre-Kondo because everything was going shoved in so I couldn't see it anyway but now it drives me mad that I can't see everything at once.
Ringing - I think you are right and I'd actually prefer to buy a better quality pair that will fit and look nice for longer instead of some that go all baggy after a few weeks.

ViolettaBridgettettette · 08/01/2015 16:09

Also wanted to add that I was very controlled during my visit to ikea last week. Having kondoed almost all the house it was then very easy to see the gaps in my storage. To be frank we don't have much storage generally and so i got the boys a set of small wooden drawers each for random bits and I got myself an upright magazine/paper tidy thing so I now officially own an inbox! No more messy piles of paperwork. I also managed to talk myself into using shoe boxes for photo storage rather then buying ikea storage for them.

Right off to read and catch up on everyone else's news

APlaceOnTheCouch · 08/01/2015 16:27

MangoBiscuit I loved that clip! I was exactly like that with the tiara! From the irritated 'what is in this tissue paper?' to the 'it's my tiara!' and getting DS to put it on my head like I was a princess Grin

Well, we Kondoed Christmas last night ie tree and decorations. A few more empty boxes to go today and the living room should be back to normal. Although, actually much tidier than normal - hurrah!

I had to buy some new underwear because as a result of Kondoing I realised I didn't actually have that much that fitted well. It is bringing me so much joy to know the items in my drawers and wardrobes actually fit me. Usually I had to rifle through, trying items on until I found something that fit as my weight has gone up and down by a few stone in the past years. I've kept some smaller trousers and jeans but it amounts to about 4 pairs in total and they're all stored in one box so I don't accidentally try to put them on. I am so grateful to MK for all the new joy in my life, I feel like I should have a little minimalist shrine to her in a corner Grin

ViolettaBridgettettette · 08/01/2015 16:31

Grin it looks like everyone has the opposite problem to me furniture wise! Im also one of the only few women with a tiny amount of clothes, most of which are rubbish scrappy items. I really must invest in myself
