just that really!

i need to start spenidng less on the weekly shop and was wondering what other think of lidl. I went with a freind last week (didn't actually buy anything) and noticed they seem to do a good range of products at much cheaper prices.

wondering iof its worth trying - just questions marks on the quality really and whether its worth the saving

I use it sometimes when I'm organised and actually get there. I wouldn't buy some things in there but a lot of stuff is pretty good quality and you do save loads. Definitely give it a go.

I do my shop there, I even miss it if I can't go there for any reason!
Good quality stuff and much cheaper, the fruit and veg is good too, cheap and nice.
Have had a few strange smelling bits of meat from there though and I don't buy eggs from there as they are not stamped by the lion....(there has been salmonella scares from foreign eggs)
On the whole though...brilliant,

puddingz · 09/10/2006 12:25

I get dd nappies from there. £5.29 for 50!!! And the weekly offers are not bad either.

lucycat · 09/10/2006 12:30

I use it too, but there are obviously some things that they don't sell.

cocoa powder for cooking being one - I looked for it this morning.
I would agreee that supermarket value products are a similar price to Lidl, but their quality is sooo much better.
they also have lots of European Christmas type biscuits and cakes in at the moment - fatal for the waistline

lucycat · 09/10/2006 12:31

I did a link here for TLO, she talked about a food processor the other week. £20 can't be bad!

themoon666 · 09/10/2006 12:36

Lucycat... i've bought bourneville cocoa at Lidls. It's the luck of the draw what they have in from week to week. At least that's the way it seems with our local one.

The only thing I got that I wouldn't rate very highly is frozen pizza.

lucycat · 09/10/2006 12:56

I'll keep a look out for it then moon666!

all they had was ovaltine and their own drinking chocolate - I had to fight my way through the OAP's buying patterned wellies this morning

Nice bottle of Bordeaux for £2.79 though!

bewilderbeast · 09/10/2006 12:57

I think its ok but DP hates it (he's a snob) their chocolate biscuits are really nice and their feta. Also their Persil substitute is really good and IMHO smells better than persil. My friend who has 4 boys ages 21 to 9 shops their every week spends a third of what she would in tescos and never gets any complaints.

intergalacticwalrus · 09/10/2006 13:01

We shop in Lidl. We were spending 70 quid a week in Sainsburys on shopping. I hate Sainsbury's and loathed giving them my hard earned cash. I discovered Lidl, and rarely spend more than £30 a week on my shopping now.

Their weekly offers are great I think, I I end up saving so much money, as they don't stock all of the things they stock in larger supermarkets, like all of those BOGOF things that you just think "I must have it."

Our Lidl is usually empty, which is also a plus for me. I went there at 3pm on Xmas eve last year and it was empty.

PinkTulips · 09/10/2006 13:03

we do the most of our shop in aldi every week then dash to the normal supermarket for anything they don't have. saves us a fortune

lucycat · 09/10/2006 13:03

Do you buy your meat there?

I'm never sure what it's like, so I stick with our local butcher, or Somerfield round the corner.

I'd be interested to know what is ok.

intergalacticwalrus · 09/10/2006 13:05

We don;t really eat a lot of meat, and I tend get mine from the butchers down the road, as we buy it as we need it really.

I have bought meat from there in there in the past though, and it's been ok. I have to say, I trust their meat more than meat from somewhere like Asds or Tesco. I have no founding for that belief though, so don;t ask me why!

themoon666 · 09/10/2006 13:10

I might start trying to do the whole weekly shop there. My Friday evening big shop cost me over £100 this last time in Tesco. It is regularly around £90 to £100 in Morrisons too.

I would be happier giving my money to Lidls tbh. Not sure why, as I have no clue about their green credentials or whatever. I just hate the way Tesco et al are trying to take over the world.

southeastastralplain · 09/10/2006 13:11

mm me too moon! we've got one round the corner that i hardly use and tesco costs a fortune for not much iykwim

intergalacticwalrus · 09/10/2006 13:12

Lidl get my vote becuase they sell their plastic bags, which means I take my own, and it also means that I have room in my kitchen drawers for things other than bloody carrier bags! Also very good for the environment.

misspiggy · 09/10/2006 13:13

This may give you an idea of what's good and not so good.

HTH!

granarybeck · 09/10/2006 13:14

I'm sure there was a thread a while ago where someone who was a aupermarket buyer said that a lot of the meat at lidl and m&s came from same place. Could be wrong though!

misspiggy · 09/10/2006 13:14
  • sorry!
PinkTulips · 09/10/2006 13:14

the carrier bag selling has been the law here and in the rest of europe for years now. glad to see thay do it over there too.

intergalacticwalrus · 09/10/2006 13:16

Al;so they do rather nice smoked salmon for £1.99. Yum

gingernutlover · 10/10/2006 09:59

I went today and felt like the poor relation in my S reg Corolla, lots of posh cars in the car park. They have improved the range in our local one and have started stocking a few organics bits and pieces. Massive trolley load came to £60 that I think would have been at least £100 anywhere else.

EmsTomot · 11/10/2006 20:28

Our monthly shop at - cant spell it! costs £39.00 (without toiletries) at Tescos and Asda he same shop costs £70 - unbelievable saving but be prepared for brands you don't recognise
