Laundry and deodorant help please

Itsfab · 21/10/2014 17:46

I am noticing that when I am ironing Dh and the DCs shirts the heat from the iron makes the shirts give off a less than fragrant odour. Clearly that detergent isn't sufficient. Another shirt I ironed tonight smelt of the bold capsule I washed it in which is fine. The others were washed in persil powder.

DS uses Lynx. DD uses kids fresh from boots or sanex. She takes offence whenever I mention she isn't as fresh smelling as could be.

Do I need to wash at a higher temp, use different detergent or something else and what can I do about DD who has only just stopped moaning about having to shower daily and "doesn't care" if she is the smelly kid who gets teased. Clearly I care and make her wash but the laundry is also a problem.

I have a spray anti-p deodorant so that is why I thought they were all both now.

I have to pick up DS2 soon so will stop at Boots. I know that to get DS1, do you have any recommendations for an eleven year old girl please?

The dettol stuff doesn't bleach, I've been using it since it came out with no problems at all Smile
Even something like taking the shirt off as soon as and soaking in some laundry stuff and water helps
My gym and riding stuff goes straight in a bucket to soak now - I sweat and if allowed to dry then it sets and harder to get out
Don't worry about asking - I had to google when I first noticed it Smile
Basically anti p = stops you sweating, deo = smells nice to cover the sweat

goodasitgets · 22/10/2014 13:52

Sanex do an anti p, just check the label

Artandco · 22/10/2014 13:56

Biosen is good for a natural type for young teens. Or Jason's for a fragrance also

Itsfab · 22/10/2014 14:04

Does it matter if a roll on or spray? DS prefers spray, DD prefers roll on.

I shall go soon and stock up. Shall I just bin what they are currently using? Hate waste but don't want them pongy either. DD wasn't happy when I talked to her yesterday. She said people don't go around smelling her Grin but when she got in the car I couldn't miss her.

OP posts:
Itsfab · 22/10/2014 14:05

She is using sanex roll on anti-p actually but it mustn't be enough.

OP posts:
Artandco · 22/10/2014 14:06

Personally I would say roll on is better as then they aren't breathing in the fumes plus targets area completely. Plus your house won't stink of whatever they have jut sprayed! I think the stick ones actually are better than roll on

Artandco · 22/10/2014 14:09

Is she actually washing with soap when she showers if just standing under water with bit of shower gel thrown somewhere for good measure?

I think an actual bar of soap for washing is far better than any shower gel. I recommend dove soap. Get a pack of 4 for less than £2 so lasts ages even if you all have own bar. Get her to wash head to toe with actual bar of soap so she's fully washed not just rinsed

ilovepowerhoop · 22/10/2014 14:10

maybe it is residue in her clothes that is smelling as I sometimes use sanex and it works well on me (I sweat a bit and do gym classes, etc)

I prefer roll on to stick. I like the Garnier Minerals roll on and thats what I use at the moment. the ultra dry one is good

Itsfab · 22/10/2014 14:13

I prefer non sprays for reasons said but DS1 hated the stick and he needs something. I have wondered about how much actual washing is going on. I will get her a bar of soap and soap dish.

Jason's seems to be on line only as not on Boots' website so I will go with Biosen plus all the laundry bits and see how we go.

Off shopping now.

Thanks everyone. You are all great WineCake.

I'm wondering if Persil have changed their formulas recently.

I've been having the same problem with stuff washed in Persil liquid.

Last lot of laundry, done in Tesco's cheap liquid, actually smells clean!

It's possible DH accidentally did it at 60°C (our machine defaults to hot) , so further experiments are called for.

ilovepowerhoop · 22/10/2014 14:19

I dont think Bionsen is an anti-perspirant either

Itsfab · 22/10/2014 14:31

Confused again if biosen is going to help!!

At boots now. Help!!

10 additional litres of water

QUARTER BATCH1 litre water (boiling)
1/2 cup/4oz bar soap (grated)
1/2 cup/4oz Borax
1/2 cup/4oz Washing Soda

4 and a half additional litres of water

Add finely grated bar soap to required amount of boiling water in a pot, on the cooker, gentle heat, stir/whisk until soap is melted.

Add the Borax and Washing Soda & Stir well until all is dissolved.

Pour into bucket
Add required amount of additional litres of warm/hot tap water, stir until well mixed.

Add fragrance if desired, i use baby powder but only because its my favourite
Cover pail and use 1/4 cup for each load of laundry or bottle. Stir the soap each time you use it (will gel but will take approx 48hrs).

toofarfromcivilisation · 22/10/2014 14:36

Costs me about £5 to make 20 litres and it is the best stuff I've ever used. No I'm not a hippy.

Itsfab · 22/10/2014 14:40

Got sensitive lynx dry to try for ds

OP posts:
annielostit · 22/10/2014 14:47

Ds uses sure(stick) for men & lynx. It works when he uses it. He gets that I nag to wash etc as me telling he got whiffy pits is better than a not nice person at school.??

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 22/10/2014 14:56

Don't change your deodorants, change your washing liquids to powder. If your washing still pongs after washing then your washing liquid isn't good enough! Powder and 60 degrees (or more) in a normal (not quick) cycle should do the trick!

PrivateJourney · 22/10/2014 14:58

The pits on DH's work shirts and DS1's (nasty nylon) sports kit really reek, despite copious amounts of anti-p. It keeps them fresh for most of the day, under normal circumstances but it's not invincible.

Vinegar is definitely what you need. I keep a plant spray filled with half white vinegar, half water and use it for cleaning the bathroom etc and to spray the armpits of shirts as I'm putting them in the washer, on a normal wash with whatever detergent was on offer. Makes a huge difference. Not even any nasty wafts as I'm ironing.

Itsfab · 22/10/2014 16:11

Home now.

DD now happy that I have been telling her what needs to be done and complaining her little brother is listening Hmm.

How can one company make NINE versions?!?

DS1 said he hasn't been using his very much but says every day when I tell him he needs too every day Hmm. Got him Lynx dry.

Got DD dove soap and a dish and told her exactly what to do with it and where to wash as she is used to shower gel. She doesn't like any talk about smells and bodies but I don't want to smell her or have any one teasing her.

I also got Dettol laundry cleanser.

White wash going on tomorrow. I have persil powder, ariel excel gel, Dettol laundry cleanser, bold capsules and distilled malt vinegar. Wash options are mixed fabrics, 1 hour 24, 40 degrees, synthetics, 1 hour 23, 40 degrees, cottons 2 hours 22 minutes, 60 degrees, intensive, 3 hours 12 minutes, 60 degrees, baby and toddler clothing, 2 hours 22 mins, 90 degrees, A class 40 degrees, 2 hours 42 mins, 40 degrees, daily quick 39 minutes, 30 degrees. The other choices aren't relevant.

So, best bet for detergent, extras and which cycle shall I go with?

OP posts:
Itsfab · 22/10/2014 16:16

toofar is that as well as detergent from the shop?

OP posts:
Itsfab · 22/10/2014 16:19

DD not happy...

OP posts:
Itsfab · 23/10/2014 07:52

I am trying some tips and will note them all down to see what works.

In the washer I have the shirts, some towels and a couple of my white t-shirts and also a PE top and pair of shorts.

Using Ariel Excel Gel, 2 cupful's of Dettol Laundry Cleanser and are washing on cottons which is 60 degrees and will take 2 hours 22 minutes. That is nearly an hour longer than my usual wash so I hope it is worth it! I hate wasting water but I can't have the shirts not clean.

Thanks for all your help everyone.
