To those of you who do food shop online..

I'm trying to get more organised by doing online food shopping as I find it really difficult taking two lively dc's around the supermarket!

I can't decide which would be the best day/time to get it delivered. Would like to hear what other people's routines are, so when do you place the order and when do you have it delivered? Also how well does it work in terms of avoiding having to still go to shop midweek? I reckon I'm bound to remember stuff just as I've pressed the place order button!!

I tend to get it delivered in the evening when DH is at home and can help with unpacking.

pluCaChange · 15/10/2014 18:19

I use Sainsbury's, which has hour-long slots. Mid-week, I can generally get a slot for tge next day, and ordes can be changed up to 11pm (I think, or 10pm).

Today i had the order arrive in the 2-3 slot, so I didn't miss the school run (a risk with 9-10 or 3-4 slots).

A late Sunday slot (8 or 9) canbe quite good, and sometimes they call to say tgey're running ahead of time so so xan they come early.

Cherrypi · 15/10/2014 18:20

You can add stuff to your order once you've paid up till midnight before delivery.

Hulababy · 15/10/2014 18:20

Mine normally comes on a Monday evening, after work - around 5-6pm. Mans I can buy something quick to make that night and have fresh stuff for on-Fri.

If cooking at the weekend I tend to do a second smaller shop to arrive Friday night, if in, or Saturday morning.

Most online shops let you edit your order, until the day before your delivery.

Daisy17 · 15/10/2014 18:23

We tend to do early Saturday morning. One of us is up with 3 year old DS by then anyway, and he enjoys helping bring it in. It's not a cheap slot but works for us. And we have a loyalty pass thing now so all of our deliveries are at a discount anyway.

Jemster · 15/10/2014 18:24

Thank you for replying. One other thing, do you work from a meal plan and how long does it take to do the online order roughly?

i use Asda. Some of their afternoon slots only cost 50p or £1

You can change the order up till midnight the day before delivery. I far prefer them to Tesco

Redglitter · 15/10/2014 18:27

Your first order will take longer cos you're finding your way round. Orders are saved and items show as favourites. I can do an order in about 5 mins now then pop on and off as things occur to me. Overall I reckon I spend about 15 mins in total

irregularegular · 15/10/2014 18:27

I always have a delivery quite late on Thursday evening. Thursdays are cheaper than weekends (and I have a mid-week only free delivery pass) and this way I have fresh fish/meat etc ready to do 'nice' meals on Friday/Saturday/Sunday - then I shift more to store cupboard/freezer cooking as the week goes on.

I have an automatic, pre-booked delivery slot. There is an automatic order generated based on my favourites, which I then edit - usually on Wednesday evening, but sometimes earlier if I know I will be busy. Though I can do it on my phone in 10 mins if need be.

I almost never have to buy anything else during the week. I have a blackboard in the kitchen on which I add staples as we run out. I also do a quick survey of the cupboards/fridge/freezer before shopping and note down anything else we are low on. And I do a meal plan and note fresh or special ingredients I need for that. Plus the automatically generated order prompts be too.

It's much easier to remember everything we need than at the supermarket because I can always go to the kitchen and check if I'm not sure, or look up recipes as I go.

It takes a while the first few times but after that is saves soooo much time.

Myfanwyprice · 15/10/2014 18:28

I tend to have it delivered on a Saturday, around lunchtime, I usually order it in a Thursday evening, and as others have said you can amend up until late the night before.

I've got a note book, and I write things down that I need to order (but will forget if I don't write down!) and also write the weeks dinners before I order to make sure I've got everything I need for each meal.

Tescos have a favourites tab and that lists the things you order regularly, that helps me to remember the essentials!

CointreauVersial · 15/10/2014 18:32

I always have mine delivered Tues/Weds/Thurs because I have a prepaid midweek delivery deal.

I choose an afternoon or evening slot, and basically work it around what the DCs are doing. So if there are no clubs/sports fixtures etc. I will choose 4-5pm because that's the earliest I can get home. Otherwise it's later in the evening.

I do the odd top up shop around the weekend.

CointreauVersial · 15/10/2014 18:34

Forgot to say, I book the slot a few days before. I secure it by going through checkout with just one or two items.

Then, the night before, I add in everything else I need. Tesco let's you do that until 11.30pm.

Parietal · 15/10/2014 18:38

each sunday, I do a meal plan to stick on the fridge (DH and nanny also need to see), then put in the shopping order for delivery monday 9pm. works very well.

bonzo77 · 15/10/2014 18:39

Usually Tue/wed/thur night due to delivery rates. I really should get a pass. Usually 8-9 slot once kids asleep and often DH is home. I avoid the weekends as it's harder to know when we'll be in, and I don't want to plan my weekend round the delivery.

I also re-order my favourites and keep a running list in the kitchen.

mooth · 15/10/2014 18:40

Early Sunday evening. Every week. Then a top up shop for nice weekend food on a Saturday morning.

Viviennemary · 15/10/2014 18:43

We don't usually get online shopping but if we do I like it Friday afternoon and then have it for the weekend. Keep saying we'll do it every week but don't. Last time some yoghurts appeared that I hadn't ordered or even were substituted I just kept them because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of changing them. And they were quite expensive and not even that nice.

AmeliaPeabody · 15/10/2014 18:47

I choose an early morning slot. Weekday if possible. Weekends, especially Sunday, or later in the day, tend to give more substitutions (unless I shop at Ocado where there are rarely any substitutions).

PinkSquash · 15/10/2014 18:57

I get mine on a Friday morning as I'm not too busy then, also means there's food for the DC to graze on.

I don't find it takes too long as I add as I go. It is worth every penny IMO.

fertilityFTW · 15/10/2014 18:59

Thursday mornings here - after the toddler's nap time is done - she likes to 'help' unpack Grin. It means I can cook the 'big' weekend meals with fresh ingredients - and all the little snackerels and treats get a good go over Sat/Sun by everyone - over the week the rest of the meals (more modest) use up the remaining stuff. I usually plan the menu in advance and rarely need a midweek shop (unless Ocado have smashed all the egg cartons on the way in - which happens more than it should!).

Notabar · 15/10/2014 19:03

Ours either comes Friday night (any time after the kids are in bed) or Saturday morning early. Occasionally I get it on a Sunday.

I meal plan Sun-Fri, as we usually get a takeaway or have something cobbled together from leftovers on Saturday.

larryphilanddave · 16/10/2014 00:59

I either get first thing in the morning or last slot in the evening and we use Ocado. I use these slots as they're convenient for us leaving the whole of the day inbetween free and DC usually occupied/asleep. I order from favourites for the basics we always need, often I save the slot I want by doing a basics order to meet the minimum (£40) plus anything I know I definitely need (we have a kitchen board on which we write anything we need, want or run out of). I usually book a slot 2-3 days ahead.

I then tend to go back a couple of times to check the offers and add extras that we fancy. It doesn't take long, we just always seem to come up with different things that we want hence the return visits.

We have a free 6 month anytime delivery pass, after which if we want to we can get a 12 month anytime delivery pass for £5.99/month. It's good to look out for delivery pass offers, I think they're really worth it, much cheaper than public transport for us and I assume cheaper than petrol (I don't drive so can't say definitively, but around £6/month seems good to me!).

larryphilanddave · 16/10/2014 01:05

PS we still go to the shop midweek, but our Ocado shop is only every 8-10 days for main things, heavy stuff, and we freeze some of the fresh stuff or cook and freeze. We regularly get some stuff from a specialist shop which is where we top up midweek, plus milk and bread which we just get at a small Waitrose as it's next door. It's very easy as our midweek shop is usually pretty quick and no more than 2-3 carrier bags (one bag is pretty much just milk and bread).

Woodenheart · 16/10/2014 01:10

Wed/Thurs evenings for me between 6-8pm with Asda its £1.00 delivery.

In the 5 minutes it takes me to add items in my trolley & check out online,

I reckon in real life I would still be searching for car keys!

This is with a stressed toddler, before we even leave the house to enter the real life hassle of a 2 hour round trip. I honestly don't know why I used to put us through it.

TerryDolittle · 17/10/2014 13:57

I shop with Asda.
I get a month delivery pass for £8.
Delivered on Saturdays so lots of fresh veg for Sunday dinner. Also means most fresh fruits will last for the school week.

PerpendicularKitten · 17/10/2014 14:46

Place the order on a Sunday to get the slot I want and see what is on offer.

The order arrives Tue or Wed so I gave a couple of days to plan meals around the stuff that is on offer and to remember anything I have forgotten. Order arrives just after the morning school run.

I am a bit tight so I have a list of things that are cheaper in other shops so I pick those up in the week along with milk, fruit and other easy bits. Meat comes from the butchers as I usual buy and cook the same day if I can.
