To those of you who do food shop online..

I'm trying to get more organised by doing online food shopping as I find it really difficult taking two lively dc's around the supermarket!

I can't decide which would be the best day/time to get it delivered. Would like to hear what other people's routines are, so when do you place the order and when do you have it delivered? Also how well does it work in terms of avoiding having to still go to shop midweek? I reckon I'm bound to remember stuff just as I've pressed the place order button!!

I use asda online and pay £15 every 3 months for delivery. I get a delivery every Sunday between 12-2 and usually an extra delivery a month with household stuff.

NotCitrus · 17/10/2014 14:58

I do an online shop about once a month for heavy and bulky items, spending over £100 to get free delivery. Then I top up with fresh food from my local shops (which happen to be two supermarkets and lots of poundabowl guys).

I get delivery late during the week, so they often ask if they can come early.

I always have mine delivered sometime after 7 as I know someone will always be at the house - kids to be in bed- so even if I forget there will be DH or I here.

I have used most of the main supermarkets but currently using Asda as they have a £1 slot which suits me. I find after a bit I get bored of one shop and just rotate onto another.

I used to be organised and order on a Monday night for delivery on Thursday. But I have got lazy and am leaving it until Wednesday to order.

I used to have stuff delivered on Wednesday but everything was gone by Sunday! I find the cupboard fairly bare by Tuesday now. But I don't mind a spartan Wednesday when I know it will be replenished by Thursday.

I'm not organised enough to shop for a whole week, so I pay £6.99 a month for a delivery pass so I can have as many deliveries as I want.

I have several £40ish deliveries through the week - usually a Friday with stuff for the weekend; then a Sunday night to bring all the packed lunch stuff and do a couple of meals and then either one or two deliveries in the week.

Having regular shops means that I don't need to do as many top-up shops as it's easy enough to add something to the next order as and when it's running low, and I only have to think about a couple of dinners at a time.

I do the shop on sunday or monday morning, for delivery between 9 & 10am tuesday morning. I am quite lazy and don't meal plan all that much, just have a vague idea of meals over the next week. As long as the main food & groceries are covered I'm happy. I don't mind running to the village shop for the odd pint of milk or loaf of bread and emergency chocolate

I gave up shopping in person when I was heavily pregnant with DS2. 2 children and a weeks worth of supermarket shopping? No fecking way.

I use Tesco and my delivery saver costs me £3/month at the moment. Thats quite a lot less than I spend on petrol to drive there and back every week.

I do find I save money by sticking to the favourites list for the most part and not being waylaid by end of aisle offers. (and then spend it on chocolate).

We are experimenting with tesco £6 a month anytime pass. I like Tesco because you can often get a next day slot. I put the order in on a Sunday for a Mon daytime delivery (my non work day), but now I have the anytime pass I might experiment with some more expensive slots.

I'm also thinking that I don't have to do a full weekly shop anymore, I can top up things midweek more easily.

Woodenheart · 20/10/2014 17:26

Asda is £25 minimum spend with £1 delivery, I think some are £40?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2014 19:56

I have a Tesco £6 monthly pass. I tend to do a shop every four days. Haven't been to a supermarket in yonks.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/10/2014 19:59

One thing I find quite handy, if I want, say, biscuits for lunch boxes. Click on something like kit kats, then click on Rest of Shelf, then order by price. So you can see this week's cheapest kit kat equivalents.

Limer · 20/10/2014 20:04

Monday evening usually, I put the order through on a Sunday (Sainsburys). I meal plan and during the rest of the week only have to buy milk and fresh fruit.

Only decided to try online ordering last year and wish I'd done it years ago! It saves so much time and effort.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/10/2014 20:12

I order on Sunday night for delivery the following Saturday morning, then add to the order over the course of the week. The delivery is usually accidentally on purpose timed for when I'm at parkrun so that DH gets to unpack it Smile

I get mine delivered Friday mornings, I usually do the order on a Monday, then add or remove on a Thursday after seeing what we've eaten most of. I use Asda, I have their app on my phone and can do the shopping while I'm coming home on the bus. I too have a delivery pass, although I got a 4 month one when it was on offer for £18, which works out less than I would pay for a month normally

helzapoppin2 · 21/10/2014 06:31

I use Tesco home delivery, randomly. A few times lately I've been away from home, without transport, or in the country miles from a supermarket. They are a lifesaver.
I find something quite luxurious about groceries just appearing at my door!

Madcats · 21/10/2014 13:37

I have a midweek pass with Ocado and tend to get it to arrive just after the Tuesday morning school run. I have done a few late evening slots, but they often ran late.

We often go out/eat out at weekends so I just tend to buy mid-week food and non-perishables and pick up the rest on Friday/Saturday when we have more of a plan.

My Sunday morning chore is to sit in bed with a mug of tea and a laptop/ipad organising the shopping. I guess it takes me 5 minutes to whizz through adding "favourites" and then another 5-10 minutes buying/browsing. I'll tend to search directly for meat/veg/fish to check for promotions. I usually review the order on a Monday (and have been known to add a few items they've put on "flash sale").

We tend to keep a list in the kitchen during the week to note down when cereals/jars etc are running low.

A typical shop for me is probably about £75-£125. Having used Waitrose and Tescos online before Ocado came along I find they do send me vouchers/offer hefty discounts to tempt me back. It might be worth signing up to a couple of delivery services just to find the one that works for you (definitely look for a discount voucher for your first order).

Welliesandpyjamas · 24/10/2014 20:52

We usually have deliveries in Saturday morning so that the weekend so that we are fully stocked up while everyone is at home. Also we can be ready that way for the coming week of packed lunches.
As others have said, changes to the list can be made up to midnight the night before.
We use a shared notebook page (on ipad and iphone) to add stuff to the list while we remember them.
We tend to buy the same stuff every week so we usually just shop out of the 'favourites' section on the asda website. Quicker and easier, and avoids getting drawn in to the lure of special offers of stuff we don't actually need but the price is good

Every time we get a delivery I smile inside knowing that I didn't have to drive to a supermarket, walk around it with a bored or tired toddler for too long, queue, lack bags, and lug bags.

imip · 24/10/2014 21:00

Another midweek ocado delivery here. Tue morn, ideally before school run bc I am usually out of packed lunch stuff! I'm trying to stop top-up shopping to save time in life!

I think, however, what will work for me is two deliveries a week. When the midweek pass is up, I will get am anytime pass.

I am doing a top-up shop tomorrow, but that's more for the sainsburys toy sale. I find I spend much less online shopping with ocado than on-store at sainsburys! Go figure!
