Come fold your loved clothes, and feel the spark of joy in every object you own (or thereabouts).

I have just counted all the empty containers that used to have stuff in then - there are 30! Plastic shoeboxes, plastic containers in medium and large sizes, round plastic tubs, woven baskets....I kept buying more and it turns out I have more than enough Blush

The last thing I do will be to thank the containers I no longer need and pass them onto someone else.

Coughle · 15/10/2014 12:58

I mean, that will literally be the last thing on my list.. It sounded a bit like I was saying you would have to pry them out of my child dead hands...

Coughle · 15/10/2014 12:58

Argh! Cold dead hands. Sorry.

Shockingundercrackers · 15/10/2014 13:28

Yes hub you are right. It's just that I have a deep unease around mess. I can't abide mess and this is why I have cupboards and two count them TWO massive loft spaces rammed full of unsorted and unneeded stuff... And breathe!

But yes, massive progress made. One of the things I've done since starting this massive sort out is that I've bought a safe. Just a cheap one,but I've put our birth cents, passports, the house deeds (we don't have a mortgage any more, so they weren't filed at the bank, they were amongst a load of junk in a bedside locker!) and will put my jewellery in there tonight. The jeweller isn't expensive but it belonged to my granny and my great aunt and I'd hate for something to happen to it.

Nothing's that valuable but the safe is fireproof so I'm thinking that I'll back up the photos (25,000 of them on the hard drive I know I know) and put them up there to. I feel pretty good about that despite not actually doing it yet.

got this today from library. keen to join but whether i will act on it.

Kewcumber · 15/10/2014 13:52

alemci - please join in ... I need a slacker to keep me company. My attitudes are changing even if I haven't had time to do as much as I would like.

OneSkinnyChip · 15/10/2014 14:02

Alemci you will probably surprise yourself. I have read so many clutter clearing books but this one seems to have raised my arse from the sofa and made me start actually getting rid of stuff. Our Beloved Leader knows her shit :o

alemci · 15/10/2014 14:09

thanks love the way you have labelled me a slackerGrin

you'll give me a complex.

must admit i don't like being wasteful and throwing stuff out.

Kewcumber · 15/10/2014 14:17

sorry I was projecting alemci Blush

I think there will always be a need for every bit of crap I've got, that someone will be able to use it...

JimmyCorkhill · 15/10/2014 14:30

Chaffinch you must declutter the shorts ! Marie says that you are not allowed to pass on items to others unless they actually want them, otherwise you are actually delaying the decluttering and forcing someone else to deal with your stuff.

I have hardly any clothes left but I still own some that don't bring joy. If I got rid of them I'd have nothing left to wear. This makes me sad because why did I buy joyless stuff to start with? I am realising how little I value myself Sad No more. It has to bring me joy from the start. I am over "it'll do" clothes.

MrsCurrent · 15/10/2014 15:55

Go Jimmy, that's the attitude!

alemci · 15/10/2014 15:55

it's fine, I knew you were joking but tbh you aren't that far out and I have loads of useless crap.

things like obsolete phone chargers but don't know which phone they belong to and what should I do with them.

plus dh is terrible.

Love this thread.

ProveMeWrong · 15/10/2014 17:08

Ahhhh just did jewellery and what a load of old tat I've been keeping. Not that many odd earrings but just loads of stuff I wouldn't be seen dead in. I do need to get a jewllers hanger thing but in true KonMari fashion I styled something for my dangly earrings out of a cornflake box with them poked through like a book and it works surprisingly well! Kinda like vertical storage. I have twenty pairs of dangles! Who knew?! Also, it is a weight lifted as I sorted a pile of silver that I'm going to recycle or whatever it is you do with silver. I actually like my earrings now I can see them all at a glance!ndo need to give the silver things a good clean though....

amigababy · 15/10/2014 17:33

I can totally recommend a safe, we got one after being burgled. Burglars got close to the passports but missed them. They took cash that had just come from the cash point. All that kind of stuff is secured now for the price of about 50.

Bizarrely I almost thank the burglars as we reviewed so much around the house afterwards, storage, valuables, attachment to possessions, tidiness etc.

Justgotosleepnow · 15/10/2014 17:55

What should I do with our IT drawer? It has in it all the phone computery stuff in it. All tidy in wee boxes. Ie Nokia, apple etc.
but we don't actually use any of it Hmm
And I feel if I get rid we are bound to need some it & just buy it all over again (now broke so this isn't an option)
So I'm stuck!

ChaffinchOfMegalolz · 15/10/2014 18:31

seems there are a lot of clutterloving DP /H's out there Hmm

mine is a nightmare

''what've you sold today?'' was his greeting yesterday, complete with a Hmm face.
he's sore at me in case I remove one of his ruddy dvds

I successfully sold a handbag on eBay! One less item in the house & I got money for it yippee! Grin

MsBug · 15/10/2014 21:26

I've started on paperwork.

Just chucked my smear test results from 2003 Grin

Can we definitely chuck anything financial more than 6 years old? So anything from 2006 and before, is that right (maths not my strong point)

didireallysaythat · 15/10/2014 21:35

Jammies - I like the idea of one in, one out applied to kids but not bags of rubbish. Currently drowning in under this week's junk modelling output from the prolific 4 year old....

BertieBotts · 15/10/2014 21:53

2008 would be 6 years. If that advice is from the book I'd check a UK source.

alemci · 15/10/2014 21:54

i think you only need to keep documents for 7 years' if you are self employed. i started a bonfite bag of old paper rather than shredding.

dh usually does one around now.
