Come fold your loved clothes, and feel the spark of joy in every object you own (or thereabouts).

Hi all.

I haven't done what I was supposed to do which was finish my bedroom. However DH and I have had a good few hours today sorting the utility room and in particular two cupboards of doom - one under sink and one to side of washing machine. Also sorted medicines cupboard. And the cupboards of doom led to sorting the cupboard under the kitchen sink too. Three more cupboards in the utility room will be done tomorrow.

Also washed out th detergent drawer in the washing machine and have that running a maintenance wash at the moment.

I'm not entirely sure I am following the true KonMari path but I'm achieving more than I ever have before!

CiderwithBuda · 26/10/2014 15:40

And I went to ikea and didn't buy any random crap!

PolkadotRosa · 26/10/2014 15:51

Hello! I joined a little whole ago, read more of the book, and have caught up on all your inspiring posts. Today I have started! Clothes pulled from wardrobe, ironing pile and drawers and I now have 4 'bag for life' type bags full ready for the charity shop tomorrow Smile I realised that the 'joy' question, and only using that question/reasoning, is the only thing that makes me get rid! Hardly any of my long held onto clothes spark joy!! I also have a 'rag bag' now which I'm going to recycle into cleaning & dusting cloths to use in my eventual Kondo-Transformed clutterless home. Feeling positive, maybe things can be better. Stage 2, kids clothes...

Justgotosleepnow · 26/10/2014 16:50

Cupboard of doom! Love that description, we have many!
But a few less as of today Grin

Bathroom undersink cupboard cleared out & tidied.

Some drawers completely emptied into the bin.

A narrow billy bookcase given away & contents sorted out.

Every room is looking better Grin

Am slightly scared about the ultimate cupboard of doom- the loft Shock
No way I can do that in one go, but it's gotta get done Blush

alemci · 26/10/2014 17:24

I gave some of books my ds no longer wanted to my dn today which was great. I will keep at it. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I think it is when people come over and you tidy up and shove things in cupboards randomly.

Some drawers completely emptied into the bin.

This made me laugh, justgotosleep, we've all been there!

Unexpected bit of tidying today as DH (long none believer in the gospel according to Marie) came home from business trip and actually congratulated me on finally seeing the tidying light and couldn't believe how much better inside every cupboard was! So while he was still in the afterglow, I pulled out all the stuff that needed archiving from the closet and asked him to help me put the tents/paddling pools in the cellar, and bring up the Christmas decorations/ ski gear. While we did that we also through away tonnes of broken camping stuff, sad cardboard boxes no longer needed, picnic blankets that were falling apart etc. It feels great to finally have a handle on the cellar and so nice having the Christmas stuff ready to go rather than dreading bringing it in when we buy the tree!

Fifilal · 26/10/2014 19:48

I have 4 bags of clothes for charity shop and a big bag of hangers.... Does anyone know if charity shops take them?
Laughing at cider not buying random crap from ikea as have also collected all the candles from various drawers and cupboards around the house and have found 3 unopened packets of tea lights bought on ikea trips!

trainersandaches · 26/10/2014 21:54

I've done my underwear this weekend - my drawer is genuinely delightful (and quite bare!).

Chucked out lots of coloured tights and now have a few pairs of nude tights and a solitary black pair I bought to replace the rest.

MsBug · 26/10/2014 22:29

Well done everyone Flowers

I am getting there with paperwork and now have four ring binders and three magazine files (for anything which can't be hole punched). That's less than half of what we started with and it's much better organised. Now I just have to sort my uni stuff which is about the same again.

How sad am I that I'm really looking forward to doing jewellery and dd's toys when I finish paperwork?

IAmNotDarling · 26/10/2014 23:33

levantine and prove I've done my jewellery this evening too. I have found a clear Ferraro Rocher box and put my earrings in it in my wardrobe. I threw away some costume ones that I never wore.

I also found an over door hanger and put all my necklaces. I too have only been wearing the same 3 (since I went back to work 3 years ago!). The door thing also has a basket so I popped my bangles in there which have also been neglected. They all bring me joy so I'm keeping them.

I went to ikea yesterday and bought some drawer organisers. This evening I put my already paired down tops and trousers into them. Now jumpers only take up half of a drawer with the folding method.

I have to do toys and DDs clothes next. I'm dreading it.

DH isn't keen on his t-shirts being folded but the moaning has stops since he realises that it doesn't crease them!

ZingOfSeven · 27/10/2014 01:00

I have done a lot of organising and some throwing away this past week and quite happy with the result.
I'll have to put my decluttering apron on a peg now though as I'm going to have surgery today.
I try not to worry about it but it's not easy. I hope I can get back to breastfeeding tonight.
wish me luck

[brave face]

ProveMeWrong · 27/10/2014 08:29

Good luck Zing! Flowers

Hubb · 27/10/2014 08:31

All the best Zing! Good luck hope it goes well x

Thanks to whoever mentioned the cereal box for earrings idea, I have been looking for a way to display mine, am going to make that tonight :)

Levantine · 27/10/2014 09:50

Good luck zing!

I have some unpacking to do and it is easy because everything has a place to go. Another revelation!

MILLYmo0se · 27/10/2014 10:15

So I went to the Thrift Fair thing yesterday, the weather was awful so it was very quiet. With about 90 mins left I had sold 1 dress and 2 tops ! There was NO WAY I was bringing all that stuff home again so I stuck up a sign saying everything on the rail was £1 and the hordes descended lol !
DP can't understand my logic for practically giving the stuff away. 'but that stuff cost you money !', I can't make him see that
-I don't wear this stuff, most of it was my pre-DD stuff and she's 6 ! It is cluttering up my wardrobe and my brain
-the money I spent is (long) gone, what is the point of hanging on to it, it's not making me money in the wardrobe ?! Apart from anything else, this stuff is mostly size 6/XS so there is a very limited market for it

  • there were lots of very happy people, delighted with their bargains (think as new NEXT and Topshop jackets for a £1 !) and the clothes will be worn again . I gave stuff to a girl that does a stall for an animal charity too.
  • I made enough to pay for my pitch, buy myself a chipper tea on the way home, buy a fab skirt that I will wear from another stall, and about £30 that I can now use to send DD to a dance class camp thing tomorrow, the charity shop is getting the bits I didn't sell tomorrow - and I really enjoyed the day ! Oh, and my bedroom is lovely without the 'komono' and I can now re-organise mine and DD's rooms cos there aren't bags of crap in the way .
Wins all round as far as I am concerned!
CiderwithBuda · 27/10/2014 10:39

Hope all goes well Zing. Having bits of you removed is taking the decluttering a bit far but if your gall bladder is not bringing you joy then probably best it goes! Grin

I'm a bit of a xmas freak and already have a pile of xmas magazines etc but realised just now that I have an empty magazine box file so I'm about to declutter them off my desk and the table and in there. Clearing bottom shelf of a small shelf unit to put my xmas cookery books on and anything that doesn't fit in either place is going.

Then it's on to finishing the utility room. And the mug/tea/coffee cupboard in kitchen. Will count the mugs. Blush. It's a lot.

CiderwithBuda · 27/10/2014 10:41

Oh - I haven't attempted my bathroom yet but I have been decluttering by actually using stuff! Using facial and body scrubs and body lotions and foot creams. My skin feels really nice now!

Coughle · 27/10/2014 11:32

Lots of luck to you zing Flowers

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 27/10/2014 12:33

Hope all goes/ has gone well zing.

Well, I have just got short sleeved tops and dresses to do, which I will attack after Pilates.
There are 4 massive sacks for the chazza ready to go in the hall.
I am very Blush that I had over 50 pairs of trousers! How?!?!

leeloo1 · 27/10/2014 14:03

Good luck Zing, hope it goes well.

Well done MILLYmo0se - I think thats a great attitude to take with the clothes, and far better all those £1s adding up then having to dump it all the unsold stuff at the charity shop when you're fed up with it being in bags back at home.

I'm been having similar thoughts about a sale I've got coming up in November - lots of nice & nearly new kids books & toys to sell... do I price them v cheap to sell or a bit more so I make more money... perhaps I'll play it by ear on the day. The table was £25 though (eek) so I need to make quite a bit just to pay for that! :( At the moment its all clutter though, so one way or another it'll be good to get it gone! :)

Cider I agree with this "I'm not entirely sure I am following the true KonMari path but I'm achieving more than I ever have before!" I'm definitely doing more and seeing things in a new light. :)

Well done to everyone else whose making progress. :)

MILLYmo0se · 27/10/2014 14:03

Oh I can see how one would have that many, in the endless search for the 'perfect' black pair/smart pair/casual pair you end up with many 'they will do' pairs.........and they all end up lost at the back of the wardrobe to make matters worse !

Justgotosleepnow · 27/10/2014 15:43

Zing hope the surgery goes well. You get the outstanding/ extreme decluttering award this week GrinWine

Millie that's a great idea. I have a loft full of clothes, I wonder if I might do something similar.

We are all making such terrific progress. It's kind of addictive isn't it?
I've finished reading the whole book now. By gum the lady is bonkers- but I love her! I think I actually agree with all the crazy ideas. I'm kinda excited where my life will lead now Smile

ZingOfSeven · 27/10/2014 15:50

Thank you all, it went well &I'm glad it's over.Smile
just updated on my thread if anyone's interested in details.

ZingOfSeven · 27/10/2014 15:54
