mine blew up last week and i was going to buy another one, but i have no idea what for

i dont use the thing, i only warmed up milk for dd's bedtime drinks in it but they are just as happy with cold

and maybe baked potatoes, but they are SO much better in the oven

so ive decided i dont need/want one

more bunker space anyway!

I use mine all the time. Here are some ideas for you:

Making porridge
Reheating tea that has gone cold while you are doing something for the kids
Cooking veggies (much healthier than boiling and less hassle than steaming)
Warming up chocolate suace to pour over ice cream
Melting chocolate for recipes that require it
Making custard/blancmange in 5 mins flat
Making sponge puddings in 2 mins flat
Heating things from tins, eg baked beans, soup
Defrosting bread or other bakery items
Cooking the odd ready meal (well, I do sometimes, eg heated a ready cooked lasagne today for whole family in 10 mins - too tired to do otherwise - no washing up either!)
Stewing fruit
Making hot chocolate

I could go on - those were just off the top of my head. I use my microwave countless times every day (and when I had babies, I heated their milk and meals in the microwave too - naughty naughty!)

I don't have one. I don't like having too much stuff I don't understand the workings of.

FrannyandZooey · 20/09/2006 20:26

I don't have one. I despise them and they make food taste crap.

DumbledoresGirl · 20/09/2006 20:26

Blimey spots, if I went by that rule, I would only own a wooden spoon!

iris66 · 20/09/2006 20:28

the atoms in microwaved food vibrate for up to 10 muinutes after it's been nuked (imagine that in your tumbly!!)

iris66 · 20/09/2006 20:29

I hate them with a passion btw

ParanoidAndroid · 20/09/2006 20:32

I loathe them. Have never used one since reading an issue of "What the Doctors Don't Tell you" about the effects of microwaving food.

iris66 · 20/09/2006 20:36

ParanoidAndroid - was that about lack of aura in kirlian photography of microwaved/processed food?

pointydog · 20/09/2006 21:08

eh?

Miaou · 20/09/2006 21:17

lol dg at the wooden spoon comment

We haven't got one and don't miss it either - gave it to db when we moved to Scotland five or so years ago. Dh says he is thinking about getting one (he does all the cooking) and I might encourage him because then he might make meals and freeze them and I can just defrost them dead easy when he isn't about

Spidermama · 20/09/2006 21:21

Yes I also LOL'd at Dumbledoresgirl's wooden spoon comment.

Microwaves make all food taste nasty, with the exception of scrambled egg.

staceym11 · 20/09/2006 21:21

i have one and use it a bit, probably less than i thought i would but great for defrosting last minute, and any veggies that i really cant be bothered to boil!!

Steaming broccili,
Baked potatoes, finish off in oven to crisp up, heating plates,
popcorn,
porridge,

occasional WW ready meal.

I was considering a combi one as I use my normal oven more and the extra cooking space would be useful.

Skribble · 20/09/2006 21:34

Ok forgot scrambled egg and defrosting rolls.

Spidermama · 20/09/2006 21:53

Oh and heating cold coffee.

Cold tea re-heated is unacceptable.

DumbledoresGirl · 20/09/2006 22:18

Spidermama. It is better than cold tea, surely?

jasper · 20/09/2006 23:05

I don't have one

IdrisTheDragon · 20/09/2006 23:08

We have one but it hasn't worked for months and we haven't missed it. At the moment it is a useful dumping ground . Probably should move it.

I did have an acquaintance at uni who used to use her microwave to keep a parrot or cockateil in. Very very odd

sinclair · 21/09/2006 17:58

Vote here for the combi oven here too. We had one put in when we redid our kitchen on recommendation of kitchen company, it is fantastic! Little fan oven (but big enough to do a family casserole in), grill and m/wave, which, to answer OP's question we rarely use, just maybe to defrost milk if we unexpectedly run out. Wouldn't feel happy devoting that much space to a m/wave alone but use as a combi use it all the time. Assume energy saving as so small too.

nailpolish · 21/09/2006 18:15

my aunt did that sinclar, when she got a new kitchen completely replaced the traditional oven with a microwave-with-bells-on

she loves it

I've never had one. Have many many better uses for my worktop space, thanks.
(Had a toy ELC one but even that has died the death. Not much use to warm baby food either tho I once offered it to a visiting friend (in my defence I was about 4 weeks postpartum))
Don't use the kettle either so that's in the cupboard (much to the dismay of visiting grandma)
