July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps

  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.

  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.

  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Well having the neighbours DCs went really well, mainly as they played on Moshi monsters all the time they were here.

Then when friend and DD's best friend came round this afternoon, they brought us a PC! Our old laptop is on it's last legs and DD would love to play Mincecraft online with her friend so her dad built us one out of their spare parts. How nice is that! Of course all I'm going to hear now from DD is can I play Grin

Had a fabulous day out in London with DH and DS2 Grin. Visited the National Gallery and then took DS2 on a surprise boat trip down the Thames. Came home footsore, but happy.

Babystep 3 is an easy one: keep on doing what you've been doing for the last couple of days, ie. getting up and dressing to lace-up shoes and keeping your sink shining. Also start exploring the Flylady website. This may seem frustrating to newbies, but the idea is that you are building new habits and it takes time to do that.

Thursday is errand day.

The mission is here: put out the 'hot spots' that are burning in your porch, entrance hall and dining room. In other words, grab a bin bag and chuck in any clutter that's lying around.

The flight plan is here for those who are used to the routines and just need a daily reminder.

There's an interesting pamper mission for this week. I have various oils lying around, some left from a brief period attempting the oil-cleansing method (with disastrous results), but hadn't thought of using them on my hands. Not sure I'd have the time or patience to manage 30 or so minutes to massage my hands though Hmm .

Right, off to read the thread and then I'll update.

Thanks for the huge roundup yesterday Toffee (you seem to attract lots of people when you run the thread, remember that January one?). Glad you had a nice day in London.

Tada!

Morning routine + 3 loads of washing on line
Shower head to soak in vinegar
School run and go to office to sort out music lessons
Sort out arrangement with friend to look after DS tonight
Work
Errands at lunchtime
Home, school run
Washing off line and sorted
Used vinegar from shower head to do maintenance wash with shower curtain in WM (curtain gets all limescaley)
Dinner made and bags packed
DS despatched to friend's house to go to trampolining together
DD to Brownies, orienteering in a country park, stayed to help
Drove back to Scout Hut for a meeting, DD went home with a friend
Scout hut double booked, meeting held in garden, chilly
Home, DCs bedtime routine
MN
Plan packed lunches etc for tomorrow
Shower curtain re-hung
Exercises - for strength and flexibility, lost a lot of both following an operation 18 months ago.
Packed DD's costumes for drama group dress rehearsal tomorrow night

Just need to to a todo list for tomorrow, which is likely to be just as busy.

Good grief people have been busy! Toffee your day out sounds fab, hope there has been some relaxing this evening.

Got home to find DH hadn't realised there was a load of laundry in the machine and it has gone musty so first job tomorrow will be to rewash that. Also to wash up the dinner things because I thought DH had done them and he thought I'd done them and by the time we realised baby was awake.

Does anyone study in the evening? I can't seem to be able to get motivated but desperately need to put in the hours. Tips?

Round up for Day 2

digger is worrying about the huge ‘to do’ list in her control journal. (I agree with Goth - lots of small tasks add up, but each one may only take a minute or two to do. I’m much more productive when I make a ‘to do’ list instead of relying on my memory.)

Mercury is preparing for her new job in September and trying to finish coursework.

Swan ‘s children are playing ‘divide and rule’ over the Xbox (could it break down, irrevocably? Wink). She managed to juggle three children’s needs with a lot of Flying today, but wisely delegated dinner to DH.

droit has had to add yesterday’s work to today’s list. Hope the fire didn’t do much damage.

PA is disappearing to a posh hotel for a dirty weekend so she can get to know her DH again after nearly a year apart. Luxury at eye-watering prices sounds just up my street Envy.

SC managed to get out of the boudoir of doom in time to get her DD to ballet class. She has been disagreeing with her DH about filing systems but, generally, follows my tried-and-tested method, which is to shove all papers into bags or boxes. She should have piles of ironed clothes by now, as she had a visit from her ironing lady today.

Castle enjoyed her shiny sink and is actually wearing laced-up shoes for her second day of in-service training.

feet is fuming over an unwanted interruption to the football last night and has been keeping up with her Flying. She’s just bought new running shoes. (Ps: thanks for the flowers Smile).

Blue received several kicks up the backside to spur her into action.(How did the peaceful protest go today, Blue? I suspect the CBAitis and the school situation are linked, so don’t be too hard on yourself.)

Alice worked through a long list and made my mouth water with her description of homemade lemon curd cake.

Goth had a blissful lie in, then whizzed through an impressive list.

Peachandblack joined us – welcome! You sound very organised already and today’s list was incredible. Enjoy your new phone.

Still was nearly caught reading MN on the loo at work! Definitely counts as a ‘ta da’.

Poor Fraggle is in agony because of a possible broken toe Sad. (DS1 has broken a finger and possibly a toe in the past (not at the same time, fortunately) and was in so much pain both times, so I sympathise.) Hope the throbbing toe feels better by tomorrow.

Carpe didn’t feel well and fell asleep for four hours (you obviously needed it!). She is planning to go out for a child-free evening with DH on Thursday night.

Eyelet has been catching buses all day long, but her DH dealt with kids and dinner.

hyperhops has done an astonishing amount of DIY, whilst also looking after six DC and holding down a job. New cleaner arrives today – hope all goes well.

Bitchy has threatened us with a Bitchy-length list. Newbies – don’t panic when you see it. Just take deep breaths and try to relax. Bitchy will probably be in the naughty corner by the evening anyway.

WhoKnows has had a non-stop day today, with a lot of Flying (three loads of washing, no less) and a lot of ferrying DC to and fro. She has been using the powers of vinegar to de-limescale her shower head and shower curtain.

Eyelet sneaked in late and found musty washing in the machine and dirty washing up Sad. (I have no idea how you're fitting in studying as well. I usually study by snatching odd 15-minutes during the day as I'm too tired to focus by the evening and am gripped by 'The Sopranos' .).

DH has informed me tonight that he has invited our neighbour, his partner and 2 DD's round for dinner on Friday. Shock

The house is an absolute tip so I am going to need to complete a Bitchy-esque list tomorrow!. It's the school summer fair on Friday and as they are have a few craft competitions I need to help DD with these too after school.

Toe less agonising today thanks Toffee! Still strapped and swollen but today I'm motivated again and so I've already sorted through my enormously huge paperwork box (yuck yuck yuck). I've just sorted out the wheat from the chaff so dumped a load into the recycling and then have a pile which needs some sort of action and a pile which just needs putting into the right hanging files. Also slightly distracted my new family tree on my laptop so plan to do the actual filing by listening to fly lady and doing 15 mins at a time! Go me and all other flies!

Report
ToffeeWhirl · 03/07/2014 07:56

dizzy - as your DH invited them and he's the one with time on his hands, he should be the one who tidies up the house - or at least helps you with it. That really doesn't sound good timing, especially when you have the summer fair today.

MIL is coming over again today to 'baby-sit' (boy-sit?) so I can meet my friend's family for lunch. It will probably be the last time I see them before they all go back to America, taking her boys with them.

Lots of other stuff to do today as well, including packing for our trip to my mum's (we leave tomorrow, but I'll be able to continue posting from there). I have made a long, scary-looking list.

But first, I need breakfast and Brew...

That is so sad about your friends' boys Sad. Well, of course it is wonderful that they have a loving family to take them in, but what a huge change for them. And hard for you xxx

Goth what an amazing friend to have! That's so fantastic!

Urgh Dizzy school fete + entertaining does not sound like a happy combination! Good luck with your crisis clean!

Congrats on such a long ta da list whoknows!

Fraggle Ouch and huge sympathies - I broke my toe earlier in the year and nearly passed out with the pain when it happened. Hope yours mends quickly!

Hyperhops like the idea of your high tech solution to paper clutter; must investigate.

Carpe hope you feel better today and sorry to hear about your dbil

Stillwearingoldsocks arf x 3 at your awkward work/loo incident!! Grin Grin Grin

Big waves to eveyrone else. I've been saying it for three days but I am really going to try and get myself in to gear this morning. Bad case of CBA. Did the minimum yesterday + fed/played with our friends' (who have left) cat.

Felt quite depressed and tearful (and a bit ill) yesterday for not any particular reason. Must be the state of the boudoir Wink

Anyway, starting again with realistic list.

Ta da:
rabbits
got dd off to dancing with bun intact and

To do:
put ironed washing away
morning routine inc dw, wm, s&s, rabbits
on-line parcels
stain stick tablecloths
more laundry
on-line banking
15 mins in boudoir
15 mins in home office

Beautiful day here so want to get chores done and get out of the house too!

Eyelet - I study on and off (off till October at the moment) - OU degree but taking it very slowly and not planning to complete it. I just fit it in as and when I can, I do get some free time when the DCs are at school as I only work 3 days, but the other two do seem to fill up alarmingly easily. Otherwise it's evenings after they've gone to bed (luckily I'm a night owl) or a bit when they are at home after school and the telly is on.

Dizzy - I'd be handing the Bitchy-esque list to DH under those circumstances.

Toffee - yes, lucky for the boys that they have family who will take care of them, but in such tragic circumstances it's a lot to happen in a short space of time. A friend of mine has had to step up as a guardian to a teenager recently after their second parent died, I am full of admiration for her, it's not something you ever expect to happen and she has done an amazing job. Hope the lunch goes well.

Looking at the pamper mission with interest, I had my first ever manicure last week (gel nails) and am now determined to keep my cuticles in better nick so I never have to let a nail tech near them ever again. They look lovely at the moment and want to keep them that way.

Today is a mad day of logistics as DD is doing her transition day at high school but everyone was up earlyish, being helpful and ready when they were supposed to be so a calm start.

Ta da:

  • Run in beautiful sunshine in nice new shoes :)
  • All up, fed and ready
  • S&S x 1
  • Load No1 in WM
  • Picked up friend's DD and took DD to High school and 2 littlies (like that word :)) to primary school
  • Picked up DD's friend's swimming stuff for later

To do:
  • Washing hung out
  • Load No2 in WM
  • WORK
  • S&S No2
  • Load No2 hung out
  • Ring dentist
  • Ring Electricity company
  • Ring plumber
  • Text possible cleaner and arrange a meeting

Late in afternoon/evening:
  • Pick DD and friend up from High school, give them swimming stuff and point them in direction of pool
  • Pick DS + 3 others up from school and walk to pool
  • Take 4 (including my 2) back to friend's house to be fed and the oldest 2 taken to Guides
  • Go to High School for parents meeting (must find booklet from last time!)
  • Pick up DS and put to bed
  • Feed DH and I (fridge salad I expect - it's my summer version of fridge pasta i.e. have a look at what is in fridge, make it into pasta/salad :))
  • Pick DD and friend up from Guides
  • Collapse

Worn myself out just thinking about today but need to work now.

Enjoy the sunshine if you have it.

Toffee what about doing roundup every three days or even every week perhaps? It does seem a very tall order to do it every night and we don't deserve it. It is kind enough of you to post the links..and that goes for all the previous thread leaders.

done
exhausting hot and headachey drive to school [grrr] I hate it when I hit the morning traffic back from Twickenham area..
3 children to school with relevant bits (including puppetry materials, violin, and water bottle as elder dcs confessed there were long queues at drinking fountains yesterday)

travel info from our Spanish holiday arrived, cue children fighting over who had the Spanish phrases leaflet - honestly it was a homework sheet they wouldn't be the slightest bit interested Confused Anyway fobbed ds2 off with a Spanish phrasebook from ds1's defunct homework shelf and he spent most of the car journey reading out nouns to me (he learns French at school not Spanish btw Shock

garden still idyllic, came back to find Dh reading Book 5 of G of Thrones in the garden. He always reads for 30 mins before he starts work at 9am in his office, very civilised...He said it is like being in "another world" of knights etc...

waiting for two phone calls.
Dentist at 12.15 alas, don't think they can do much with my broken rootcanal/crown, I may end up entirely toothless by 60..Hmm hate thought of a bridge and it is soo expensive too.

Feet you have nerves of steel but it sounds a lovely day for the children at any rate, and thus THEY WILL BEHAVE well (which makes life so much easier) Hope all the workmen are helpful on the phone. Transition days are great fun I think, although the evening meetings tend to be quite a reminder about how boring it is to be lectured for hours...

Thank you all for the welcome Smile. I may give the impression of being organised Toffee but really I am a great list maker and an even greater procrastinator! I can put off a job that would take 2 minutes for days so I am hoping that making myself accountable on this thread helps. I'm glad you had a great day yesterday, I love the National Gallery, when I worked in London I would often pop in there for 30 minutes if I had to kill time between client meetings. Have you been to the Portrait Gallery? I could spend hours in there as well.

I need to keep some of the momentum from yesterday going so today's list

done
showered
wash load on...err that's it!

To do
make beds
unpack shopping order when it comes
2 more wash loads to do and put on line
ironing...didn't do this yesterday
dust and hoover bedrooms - mine/DS2/spare room
take out recycling
go into village - post office/dry cleaners/drop off bag at charity shop
pop into BIL's and pick up post as they are on holiday
DS1's year13 prom, a vastly more low key affair than the year 11 prom! - they are meeting up at a friend's house and then being dropped off at the venue by her parents. I shall go along and take a couple of photos as they leave.
Take DS2 to athletic track for training
While he's training, buy some flowers and drop round to my sister with a card as she moved house last week.

dohe
made bed
waited in vain for phone calls Hmm
organised pile to be ironed tomorrow by cleaner
cleared floor of my bedroom
dirty laundry downstairs
cleared surfaces in my bedroom for dusting
opened windows and blinds in my bedroom

we are fighting a low level battle against moths atm..so I need to keep moving stuff from skirtings etc, and keep the sunshine quota high in here!

SC sorry you are feeling a bit low. Holidays can be a dramatic change of pace which often leave one floundering at the start, especially when family is a bit far away. You have been worked off your feet, and it is tempting to rush in now and start tackling something else, but maybe you need to take a break.

Laundry done and on line
One load of laundry away
S&S
Swept floors

Off to do grocery shopping and errands day in a bit so that counts too.

Brew and Cake on the bar everyone - help yourselves!

Swan - your DH's start to the day sounds very civilised. After he got wound up again writing an email to the idiot client yesterday I banished DH to the hammock for 15 mins to sooth his nerves - it is impossible to stay stressed for long in a hammock :)

Peach - long lists and world class procrastination - this is DEFINITELY the place for you :)

ta da
ds to school on time despite over sleeping (thank god for being organised last night!)
Drink coffee
make a list of everything that needs to be done
sort out getting hold of coach
Strip my bed
look at fridge and realise it needs a clean out
put upstairs bin to soak with disinfectant in bath
put cleaner in toilet
do a sweep of the upstairs bedrooms for washing up, laundry
open a few windows to air through
take the radical decision that until my room has been done I am not touching ds' again!
put "have massive bonfire" on the to do list
swear about teeny tiny rooms and too much necessary furniturs
realise need to put "have massive clothes cull" on the to do list
sort ds' kit out to air
put washable kit into wash
30mins decluttering in my room
disassemble my bed
be strict with myself and put it back together with the spare bed topper that was removed for ds for his sleep over
look at mending pile and realise that ds has outgrown them massive growth spurts rather than being left there too long (mostly) Cull!
tweak book shelf to accomadate two recently read but currently homeless books.
wonder wtf to do with the stack of books ds has leant me and insists stays in my room until read despite having perfectly good homes on a shelf in his room Hmm
hoover downstairs
lift, turn and relay lounge rug
apply flash to horrible looking bathroom sink - deliberately left so ds can see why i get cross about him leaving a mess, it worked he says it needs to be cleaned up behind people. Awareness gained - now to get him to help keep it clean Hmm
put forgotten but clean clothes away
Unload annd reload dw - put on to run
empty out bottom shelf of cupboard where flour mite infestation was (already culled the affected flour)
Clean and leave airing
Empty dead stuff out of the fridge
boil up hand warmers
make up 2 batches of jelly
empty out the kindling box to rescue crochet hook ds dropped into it a few days ago.
Rehoover rug
Clean sink

I really want to move the furniture about in my room. BUT the room is a mess, and it will involve pulling out way more stuff than i can deal with in one day. So trying to be patient and just make do with surface tidying up. It is really really annoying me Blush But sorting the rug out has killed my back so pain killers and no more furniture moving is going to be key Sad And it is lunch time nearly.
