July 2014: fledglings follow Flylady's tuition (don't forget your pamper mission)

ToffeeWhirl · 30/06/2014 09:14

A big thank you to slackcabbage for superb thread leadership throughout June, as well as a great intro which I am going to shamelessly borrow from now.

Struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun)? In that case, you need Flylady.

Flylady is a system for managing housework. Starting with babysteps, it builds up into a routine which becomes second nature. In theory, once you are used to the system, you will have a tidy house you are not embarrassed by and plenty of time to get on with more interesting things.

Flylady banishes the panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. If you fall off the Flylady bandwagon, it’s no problem: you just jump back in where you are and carry on.

Don't sign up for the Flylady emails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on this thread on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, Flylady's steps and routines will be listed here on this thread.

Flylady uses a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps

  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

(And detailed deep cleaning in each zone for those who have made real progress – not sure if anyone has reached this pinnacle yet…? I certainly haven’t).

More info here on getting started (but ignore step one!) and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Try to ignore Flylady’s purple prose (hard, I know) - the underlying system is sound!

Three key points to keep in mind:

  1. No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine.

  1. You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.

  1. It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy overnight - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new, then trying to spend 15 mins decluttering and doing the babysteps is the most you should expect of yourself. Lots of us here like posting our ‘to do’ or ‘ta da’ lists and they can look quite scary. Don’t be put off.

If all else fails, try the power of three – just pick three things that most need doing and focus on those.

And if you have visitors coming over this afternoon and need a quick fix NOW, try Flylady's crisis clean.

We all know each other pretty well on this thread and some of us have been around for a long time, but all lurkers, oldies and newcomers are very welcome!

Hello!

Have gone back through my control journal type thing for the month. Looks like a scary list Confused but it's more that I've written down things that usually get done (but are sometimes forgotten!)

Todo:
Walk dog/children
Trip to post office
Drop off coat hangers to the dry cleaner (I have hundreds)
Buy Milk
Sort out mountain of sheets

Wow Toffee so many fledglings! I haven't managed to catch up on the thread yet as I had a planning meeting at the school I start in September last night and had coursework to do but I will try to catch up and post properly later.

Ds2 was discovered listening to the match last night on his headphones (radio junkie) at 11pm. But he is still happy to wake up so not a teenager yet Grin Ds1 on th eother handneeds to be craned out of bed.

Good grief, there's loads of fledglings!! Shock Its lovely to be here again and I am flattered to be guest of honor Big waves to all of you.

Wedding anniversary today - 26 years. He is driving me crazy this morning! Hmm So flippin argumentative!! I had forgotten how to argue while we were apart for a year - we need to learn to negotiate a bit I think!! or rather HE does, cos I am always right Wink
We are going off for a few days together today. A few days of luxury in a manor house with eyewatering prices.

So excuses made for the rest of this week from me. Then I really will need to join you all next week to keep this place reasonable with more people living here again.

Have a good week.

Just about made it out alive of boudoir of doom in time to deliver dd to ballet this morning ... Grin

Blimey, what a lot of posts - everyone keeping Toffee busy! (Thanks for fab round-up!)

And you lot are inspiring me to get stuck in to my paperwork! (Sympathies to everyone who is struggling with this - mine is a nightmare too.)

It's so bad in the home office that I've lost my rabbit file (the one that lists all the medications). Need to find it before their stitches are taken out early next week.

Also, dh and I have a fundamental disagreement over how to file things.

He is adamant that the 'file by date not subject' system is most efficient ie he shoves everything in the same file and divides it up in to day/week/month or whatever is most appropriate. That works fine for him because he can remember roughly when a certain thing happened (and he argues you always have your most current bill (for example) to hand).

I prefer the 'by subject' method though because I find it less confusing and I don't have a good memory for dates not that I do any filing atm though as paperwork is shoved randomly in boxes Blush Blush. Need to get a grip.

Toffee hope you have a great day in London!

Happy Anniversary PA !! Hope you have a fab time away Thanks Wine Thanks

Castle so sorry I got the date wrong Blush! Maths was never my strong point! Grin Take it steady this week x

Good to see you Ellie!!

It was a great match (apparently) Whoknows. I was so tired last night I didn't stay up for it, but then was woken at 1 am-ish by a load of cars hooting in the street - so knew that that they'd won!!

Huge big feathery waves to everyrone else.

I feel ashamed because I faddled about yesterday and wasted a lot of time and didn't get much done. But today is another day, my lovely fortnightly ironing lady is here and I am going to use her presence to make me stick to boudoir/home office for at least a couple of hours. Going to alternate between the two (15 mins in each).

And there are several big tasks crying out to be done that I am procrastinating over:
sort now putrid art/stationery chest of drawers
gardening (terrace)
gardening (left border)
return on-line parcels
banking and e-mails
annual kitchen deep clean (need to break this down in to small tasks)
thank you cards
neice's birthday present
birthday cards and present for upcoming explosion of summer birthdays!

Have a good day everyone!

Was lovely to get up to a clean empty sink this morning. It's the only job of my 3 that I achieved yesterday evening, but I tackled some paper clutter Wink. Not that it has made a whole lot of difference. Will do a bit more today.

PA enjoy your wedding anniversary and few days away!
Toffee thanks for fab round-up!

Well I'm off to the second day of my inservice training.

To Do this today/evening:

Reboot laundry
Tackle ironing basket
Visit DMiL
Ring landlady Blush
Ring doctor
Ring kitchen company
Keep sink 'clean' Wink
That's enough!

Oh and I'm wearing my laced-up shoes! ;-)

WOW Toffee, just WOW, awesome roundup Thanks

Happy Anniversary PA Thanks - hope he stops arguing enough for you both to enjoy your few days of luxury :)

Sympathies to all re paperwork nightmares. SC - I'm with you, filing by date is a ridiculous way of doing things. Subject then date is just obvious isn't it?

Watched all of the match last night (although had intended to have an early night Hmm) and really glad I did. Incredibly exciting and played in a fantastic spirit, just what football should be and usually isn't.
Only spoiled in part by an idiot client of DH's who thought turning up at our door unannounced at 9.30pm to get DH to fix something was appropriate. He got short shrift though DH did fix the problem (luckily for idiot that DH answered the door). It has never happened before and was so far out of the realm of appropriate behaviour that we were left speechless with rage AngryAngryAngry. The email we sent this morning was 'terse'

Ta Da

  • Letter to teacher at school re DS and a music event that school have told us very little about
  • Note to DS's teacher
  • All up and out
  • One load washing done though some bits back in with added stain remover
  • Email proofread and sent
  • Organise people to sort out disco tickets for School Assoc on Monday

To do:
  • WORK
  • Hang washing out
  • Rest of morning routine - S&S x 2, washing up, washing out, sweep kitchen floor
  • Pick up new running shoes (and part with £££s for the pleasure)

Tentatively dipping my toes in here - I'm trying to get back into a regular routine after having DH out of work for a veeeeeerrrrry long time!

I have a master list of weekly jobs but find that splitting this down into a detailed daily list helps me to focus.

So today:
done

1 x wash load done and on line
1 x wash load of towels currently in machine
bins put out
dishwasher loaded

to do

make bed
strip 2 x DS beds
wash DS bedsheets
remake DS2's bed (DS1 can do his own)
clean bathroom
clean ensuite
clean downstairs loo
wash remaining towels/bathmats
sort out laundry from yesterday
ironing
put on dishwasher after lunch (DS will unload)
make dinner
order a Tesco shop to be delivered tomorrow
dust/hoover my bedroom
dust/hoover DS2's bedroom
dust/hoover spare room
dust/hoover upstairs landing and stairs

If I run out of time I will leave bedrooms until tomorrow. Best get to really!

Very impressed by everyone's ta da lists on here! I just can't seem to get in to gear, so stupid because I don't have anything else to do particularly maybe thats the problem! Just spent last 40 mins procrastinating ordering birthday cards on-line which I urgently need of course oh yes ...[not] Blush

Feetheart Shock at your dh's client's behaviour! (I thought my dh's were bad but that is so disrespectful.)

Meant to say earlier to Fraggle don't be so hard on yourself! It's an easy mistake to make and you are, after all, doing something rather than nothing like me Grin

Slack- I never have tadah lists Shock

I just had one of those awkward work loo moments - sat in cubicle trying to catch up on this lovely flying thread - hear director come in & chat so I stay quiet inside loo - & she stays ages ages ages. All the time I'm getting more Shock - if I leave now it will look weird that I've been in there silent for 10mins. The longer I leave it the weirder it will seem. But what if they notice the locked door & wonder if someone has died in there. After around 15m she left & I scuttled out

Does that count as a tadah? Grin

Thanks slack. Today I've washed bed sheets and another load and dried them on the line. Bought some hand cream and been to the hospital because I think I've broken my toe and it's bloody agony! I've also done dw and then nothing else - sat on laptop making family trees with my throbbing toe on a cushion. Let's hope my va va voom is back tomorrow.

Still holidaying and grumpy as I've had a pressure headache all day - that with a touch of hay fever meant I passed out for about 4 hours over lunch time. Angry Sad

Currently listening the baby monitor to DBIL reading bedtime stories to DS and having conflicting feelings of "awwww" and "I could kill my STBex-SIL for hurting him and probably killing any chance of him having kids". Still, means he spends more time with us so every cloud...

BUT DPIL & DBIL are baby sitting tomorrow night so DH and I are going out for the first night in about 4 years! Shock may be interesting having to have grownup conversation without a wee voice butting in!

also had minor row with dh over the children;s x box use as they played divide and rule with us on that one (as is commonly called, Daddy says... No I did not say that...Why is it my fault...I'm trying to work!!!! (poor Dad - always caught in cross fire over television use)

I think school routine is rapidly running out of steam ,and we all wish it was the holidays..
