a zillion maggots climbing out of my bin (sobbing emoticon)

I have just spent the last two hours trying to stop a biblical plague of maggots climbing out of my brown bin and crawling everywhere around the drive and road. kettles, salt, nothing works, they are devil maggots.

The neighbours are never going to speak to me again are they?
The collection wasn't' today because of the bank holiday. I am so careful with the wrapping etc, it's just we went away and came back yesterday to this nightmare.
Why doesn't boiling water kill them?
Shall I just keep pouring boiling water onto them in the bin all night?
I;m scared the bin men won't empty it if it's full of water arghhhh
help please, and I am really careful about not having a lot of food waste but fussy eating children, it isn't always easy…..
I feel ridiculously miserable about this, I'm just so ashamed. I wish they could just come weekly!

I am so exhausted I but I need to go out and try to kill them, it's pouring with rain and I've been doing this for hours….
I don't know what to do.

Bleach? Then boiling water?

HolidayCriminal · 28/05/2014 00:33

bleach to the compost heap sounds dreadfully un-environmentally friendly to me.

um, um, um... what things do you put in there MrsJavier? We have big compost heaps without any maggots.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 00:33

boiling water doesn't seem to work amazingly and I'm wary of filling the bin in case the men won't empty it…..
also it's a green bin so I can't fill it with bleach
I used a little thick bleach round the rim and it doesn't even kill all of them!
I'm so horrified

There was the remains of a stock potted chicken, bones and all, we're allowed to put all food remains in, wrapped up
they told me today that they\ve just approved the bags with seedlings on them so all shall be well but what if tomorrow I wake up and the whole road is covered in maggots I mean people will drum me out of town!!
has this ever happened to anyone before?
maybe they don't like all the salt I've poured on them….
OH GOD

Any human contact now would be gratefully received, I feel so unhappy it's pathetic

That is minging but I imagine they won't multiply overnight and surely the non bleachy ones will make a lovely height protein breakfast for the birds?

Amybabygypsyqueen · 28/05/2014 00:42

I have this exact problem I keep running out and spraying bleach this has never happened before I'm a little scared

VanitasVanitatum · 28/05/2014 00:42

How are they getting out? Could you weigh the lid down til the binmen come?

wafflyversatile · 28/05/2014 00:42

I have no advice but you can have my sympathy from way over here.

Monty27 · 28/05/2014 00:43

You have food in a brown bin? I thought that was for garden waste only. Then you say its a green bin, which is normally recycling plastic/paper/cardboard etc

That's in my borough anyway, and the black bin is for waste food.

Confused
VanitasVanitatum · 28/05/2014 00:43

Hose away the ones left outside the bin, birds will eat them. I wouldn't throw bleach around too much, not good for environment/wildlife.

HolidayCriminal · 28/05/2014 00:46

I think I would phone the council for advice on containment & control.

UKRawHealth · 28/05/2014 00:47

Advertise the maggots "free" to fishermen on Gumtree in the freebies section. Collection only. Lol!

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 00:49

we have a food/garden waste bin, and as I hardly buy newspapers anymore the food isn't as tightly packed, I'm now going to use those seedling bags you can get in Tesco's in the future, I'm just pouring kettles of boiling water on them but they're all over the drive, I think I'll to do this all night…..
but thanks for the company, I can't believe how many there are!
i only used a tiny bit of bleach round the rim to stop them climbing out but it didn't work

UKRawHealth · 28/05/2014 00:56

Do you have one of those hand held steam cleaners?

If so might be worth a try, but be careful to ensure you have rinsed all the bleach away first as steam and chemicals like bleach do not mix, it will create a gas effect.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 00:59

No I don't have one of those, I used a tiny bit of bleach to see if it worked and it didn't.
I"m just using kettles of boiling water at the moment….

Have they gone? I'm afraid I would have doused the buggers with insecticide & bagged it all up for the 'normal' waste collection. I salute your environmental superiority.

If you've got vinegar, try adding that to your boiling water. It doesn't kill them but they don't like it.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 01:17

GArlic, it is now a great seething mass and I fear if I bag it up they could escape from that and the black bin doesn't get collected for another WEEK!
I'm hoping to contain this so the guys can come but who knows I may have to bag this somehow, I'm just too exhausted to do much more, I'm typing as I boil kettles.
thanks for your company….!

GarlicMayonnaise · 28/05/2014 01:22

I'm not much use, actually, just feeling very strongly for you because it is HORRID to have a wildlife invasion when & where you didn't want it! Fuck nature, it's messy Grin

Insecticide does kill them, as they're insect larvae. Fly spray, pet shampoo, nit shampoo ... ?

Otherwise pretend you're on holiday and avoid the neighbours ... Wink

HappyAsASandboy · 28/05/2014 01:22

Just leave them. Its dark now, so the neighbours won't see, and I suspect they'll be gone in the morning (and the birds will be fat!). There really is nothing to be gained from more water now.

You probably won't sleep knowing their out there, but really they are harmless even though they're disgusting. This will all be forgotten in a week.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 01:23

Ugh this is my worst nightmare. I would comb through Google for you but I can't even face looking at pictures of them..

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 01:25

The neighbours already think I'm an eejit!

GarlicMayonnaise · 28/05/2014 01:37

Ha, well there's your excuse to shovel maggots in the neighbours' bins!

Sandboy's right, the birds will be happy with your non-poisoned maggots.

And I've just been round & sprayed inside all my bins!

Sleep well, dream of birdies singing merrily, and thank you for the flowers! Flowers
