I have just spent the last two hours trying to stop a biblical plague of maggots climbing out of my brown bin and crawling everywhere around the drive and road. kettles, salt, nothing works, they are devil maggots.

The neighbours are never going to speak to me again are they?
The collection wasn't' today because of the bank holiday. I am so careful with the wrapping etc, it's just we went away and came back yesterday to this nightmare.
Why doesn't boiling water kill them?
Shall I just keep pouring boiling water onto them in the bin all night?
I;m scared the bin men won't empty it if it's full of water arghhhh
help please, and I am really careful about not having a lot of food waste but fussy eating children, it isn't always easy…..
I feel ridiculously miserable about this, I'm just so ashamed. I wish they could just come weekly!

Oh, you poor thing. I'm sure they are dying, just not enough fast enough!

You might have to just leave it, you really have done your utmost.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 01:48

Thanks Garlic I am nearly done, then I'm thinking of getting up at five to sweep up anything I can find arghhhhhh!

At five, you may well be woken by a very loud dawn chorus! Have a sneaky look out the window before you charge out with your magic broom.

Goodnight Flowers Flowers

Please stop. If it hasn't worked in three hours it isn't going to work now.

The birds and the bin men will sort it in the morning. Seriously, once it's light, there won't be any maggots left (except the boiled ones, you might need to hose them into a drain tomorrow).

Please stop.

Applejuice70 · 28/05/2014 01:54

What you have to do is switch off any lights and put LOTS of salt on themthey are attracted to the light.they will die.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 09:32

Happy! you were right! I went to bed and couldn't get to sleep I was so wired but maybe got two or three hours, got up at 6.30 and every single little ** was gone! except for a tiny handful. But I think I finally killed the bin majority with my kettles so my I reduced the horror!
The bin men have been and emptied it so I am now kettling it clean
HOOORAYYYYYYYY
THANK GOD
now I have a whole day to stay awake while looking after these children….

Apple… they are attracted to the light?

I am maggot brave now tho, they don't even make me squeamish I'm: 'Bring it on you filthy shiteslugs!'
Honestly a night of battle and I am over them!

well…. maybe I'd better see what my nightmares are like before I get cocky

The birds would have sorted them out. I put maggots out in the spring for the birds and they don't last minutes.

Maggots happen don't worry about it.

mrsjavierbardem · 28/05/2014 09:50

I see that now, gamer, I just had no idea that they would swarm out of the bin and then start to wiggle across the whole area of the drive and the road. I had no idea that the birds would do such an amazing job! I should have listened, but I was deranged and panicked last night.
Also it is NEVER going to happen again, I'm going to bag that food waste til no fly can ever get near it!

Oh, thank goodness! :) [flower] Grin You are SuperMaggotClearer, have a medal Wink

Maggots aren't attracted to light. For fans of the little squirmy buggers Confused I actually found a website all about them (and getting rid of them): www.maggots.co.za/

GarlicMayonnaise · 28/05/2014 16:11

Flowers - meant to give you a bouquet, not just one!

hmc · 28/05/2014 16:14

Yes I had this (last year)

Now they are gone prevention is easy. Ensure all waste goes in your bin in a securely knotted bin bag.

And don't allow the lid of the wheelie bin to be left open or not properly shut (due to bulging contents) - or flies will get in a lay more eggs

e1y1 · 28/05/2014 23:20

This isn't going to be helpful (sorry) but this is why I outright refuse to recycle food waste (please don't everyone hate me)

I recycle garden waste and grass cuttings etc. Recycle glass, plastic, paper etc. However, will NOT do the food waste.

With them only collecting every 2 weeks, it's unhygienic, and to me, not safe.

Plus I am not having a little black box on my kitchen work top with smelly rotten food on, attracting flies and the like.

I did it right at first, I put some unused bagels and slices of bread in the brown bin, and by collection day (I had not managed to add any other waste to the bin, as I didn't have any) they were alive with green fur (not joking).

So no, unless they change the collection rotas, it will go into the normal waste.

My Granddad (step, he is only 55) works on council refuse collection, and I told him I refuse to do it, and he in part agrees, as he has to collect the bins, and he said, especially in the summer, they stink to high heaven and there have been lads on the collection rounds actually throwing up at the smell of some of them.

So no, will not do it at all.

Sorry for the most unhelpful reply Mumsnet has ever seen, but just through I would add my 2 cents worth.
