does EVERYONE own a dishwasher?

Just been reading the 'tips for getting organised' thread, and there are lots of tips about when to load/unload the dishwasher...
Am I the only one in the whole wide world who still doesn't own one?
What tips would you have to persude DH to get one?

I don't have one. Having kitchen re-done next month and DH's family all fall silent as I walk in the room, the words '....no dishwasher!' still hanging in the air. I do quite like washing up, but not as much as I dislike that dishwasher squeak you get on your plates; the scratching on glasses; the revolting hot boiled soapy food smell when you open the door. The detergent takes the pattern off plates FGS! And the ecological stuff as well. The jury may be out on that but I can't see how washing up by hand can't be miles better.

UrsulatheSeawitch · 27/08/2006 20:49

spots, I use Ecover tablets; my glasses are gleaming and unscratched, my plates still have all their pattern, and nothing squeaks! (Saucepans sometimes need an extra clean but that's a small price to pay).

If you do it properly, washing up by hand uses loads more water...

spots · 27/08/2006 20:55

But ursula, there's a whole industry making dishwashers... another for the powder... how many people actually use Ecover... and how many handwashers do it 'properly'?

juicychops · 27/08/2006 20:58

I dont own one and i wouldn't really want to. Washing up only takes a minute and saves the electric!!

UrsulatheSeawitch · 27/08/2006 21:00

Well juicychops obviously doesn't if it only takes a minute! (I'd like to watch that...)

Dishwashers are for lazy people, I don't deny it - they do a good job though (much better than the lazy people would)

juicychops · 27/08/2006 21:02

ok, maybe more than a minute, but its only me and ds so perhaps 2 mins

bogwobbit · 27/08/2006 21:03

I don't have one. I used to but tbh I found it to be a bit of a white elephant possibly because it was in the utility room rather than the kitchen. Often it was easier just to wash things by hand rather than to cart them through to the next room. Also I found it didn't really clean a lot of things as well as washing them by hand although this was probably because it was my teenage dd's job to load it most of the time and I don't think she did it properly.
Anyway we got rid of it a couple of months ago and I can honestly say I haven't missed it at all.

Thanks Mercy.

I have been without one for 4 months and hooray my new kitchen is being fitted next week.

Have broken more stuff in 4 months than in 10 years with a dishwasher. Unfortunate really we'll have to get new plates and glasses as well

hester · 27/08/2006 21:31

I don't have one either. My kitchen is roughly the size of a rabbit hutch, and if I had any extra space I'd probably go for a proper fridge/freezer first...

Beauregard · 27/08/2006 21:32

I would lurve one but alas not enough space in our kitchen.

Astrophe · 27/08/2006 21:32

no, but oh how I long for one.

Astrophe · 27/08/2006 21:33

I don't have one, but want one.

Unfortunatly it is that far down on my list that by the time I buy one someone will have invented self cleaning dishes or something LOL.

sorkycake · 27/08/2006 22:41

When we moved into our house the previous owner left the dishwasher as they had a fully fitted kitchen in their new house and didn't need it. Neither Dh nor I liked w/up so we were thrilled.
It broke about 4 years later and we couldn't afford to get a new one. However I assigned Dh the job of w/up on the basis I would do the ironing. Within a month there was a brand spanking new dishwasher in place! I would get rid of the tumble dryer way before the dishwasher.
I liken a dishwasher to the luxury of a washing machine, I would never want to hand wash either clothes or dishes again. Plus what about all the things you can be enjoying while a machine washes the dishes for you?
Btw I use Ecover and have no problems at all.

foxtrot · 27/08/2006 22:47

I luv my dishwasher

1Baby1Bump · 27/08/2006 22:48

my house is too small to have one....

serenity · 27/08/2006 22:53

We haven't got one. No room plus DH doesn't really like them, and as he does all the washing up, well that's his choice really.

1Baby1Bump · 27/08/2006 22:54

serenity, in that case you do have a dishwasher! lucky 'ol you!

pointydog · 27/08/2006 23:21

Nah, not got one. No room but don't want one.

Have used them on holiday a couple of times recently and what a faff. The time we took to load it, unload and then dry off dishes due to condensation we could have done the dishes in the sink. And that's what we ended up doing.

serenity · 27/08/2006 23:37

Only fair really, as I do all the cooking

hollyhobbie · 28/08/2006 17:40

Thanks all, I think I've been given some good ammunition here in the on-going fight for a dishwasher.
