I just realised I have a hierarchy of plastic/carrier bags...

...there's no hope for me is there.

Of course I have had one for years, I just didn't realise:

Crap bags (standard Tesco etc)
Slightly less crap (ocado)
Nice (marks and spencers ones you pay for, also home sense bags)
Best (joules, monsoon, anything made of thick paper)

Dh today took a meal round to a friend, I suggested he took it in a plastic bag in case of leaks and he put it in a nice one Shock. I should probably LTB but in reality I managed to bite my tongue in the face of the hierarchy of bags revelation.

Me

cakeymccakington · 10/04/2014 15:38

Me too!

TheLadyMarion · 10/04/2014 15:43

Hmm was the friend of a sort who would appreciate the good bag? If yes, then your DH was in fact in the right. Very much so.

I asked my DH to drop some stuff off to a friend of mine. He put it in a Tesco carrier! I was mortified. Now if I send him to do a job I package it appropriately, according to The Hierarchy.

Both my teen DCs are very into The Hierarchy. Muddy PE shoes may only be transported to and from school in the right kind of plastic bag, inside another bag. This conveys that that a) one has a variety of cool shopping bags, b) so many of said bags that one can afford to trash one with muddy shoes.

minipie · 10/04/2014 15:45

Me too..

doesn't everyone have this? surely?

Mine is like yours except I think I rate tesco and ocado bags the same... so just a 3 level hierarchy. And actually the nice plastic bags are more useful than the paper ones often...

SpringComeHereYouFabulousSeaso · 10/04/2014 15:51

No, friend would not have appreciated the nice bag at all. Scandalous. Quite impressed with the crap bags inside cool bags idea.

There are certain things that cannot be transported in plastic bags but require a proper bag. One is swimming kit

Mini pie - I think ocado bags might be a bit bigger and stronger. I feel sad that I have even thought about this.

I thought it was just me - this is why I love mn..

meerschweinchen · 10/04/2014 15:57

Me too. I think mine started aged 7, when my Mum sent me into school with my swimming kit in a Lee Jeans carrier bag. It had 'I love Lee' on the front. And yes, there was a boy called Lee in my class. Everyone laughed Sad Mortifying!Grin

I've been extra careful with plasic bag selection ever since!

TheLadyMarion · 10/04/2014 15:57

If the friend wouldn't have appreciated the Bag then your DH is truly walking a thin line with his behaviour. You may have had the Bag saved for a special occasion.

With the teens...it's not crap bag inside good bag. It's Good Bag inside Better Bag. The Choosing of The Bag sometimes results in the bus being missed, such is the nuance required in the decision-making process.

Ruprekt · 10/04/2014 15:59

Oh goodness, me too!

And I always put ds's lunch in a Waitrose carrier bag for school rather than a Poundland or Morrisons bag......just in case! ConfusedBlush

TheLadyMarion · 10/04/2014 16:02

Ruprekt that is Good Parenting.

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 10/04/2014 16:08

We had this at school. The kind of carrier bag you brought your PE kit in said EVERYTHING about your social status.

Tesco or Asda tended to mean you were asking to have yourself kicked round a muddy playing field.
Even worse would be Woolworths or Poundstretcher.
Topshop or Miss Selfridge bags were tolerated as it suggested you may have shopped there at least once in your life.
The pinnacle of acceptability was a River Island carrier bag. Sturdy enough not to split so your gym knickers fell out and for some reason everyone had them.
I remember one girl coming in one day with a Ralph Lauren Polo bag made of stiff paper and with long handles so she could carry it over her shoulder. I think this must have caused mass fainting amongst us 15 year old girls. When in reality her mum had probably just been to Bicester Village.
Having the right carrier bag really was of the utmost importance. Aren't teenage girls shallow? Grin

Tesco and Asda bags are that thin these days, I haven't managed to get one home without all the shopping falling out of the bottem recently Angry.

The waitrose ones are better obviously and might last. Our standard plastic carriers are mostly used for bin bags.

I do most of my food shopping in Aldi bags but don't use them as you have to pay for them, so use their boxes, or other carriers or we have some proper plasticy hessian 'bags for life' from Spanish supermarkets that are much better than the UK ones and get reused for alsorts.

Paper ones I give to teenage DNiece as she likes them Confused.

What I really don't like is those with the fucking stupid string handle supplied by Gap.

rundontwalk · 10/04/2014 16:11

Yep, me too! Dh on the other hand selects them by whether they are fit for purpose-i.e size and strength for the item. Oh the times I've tried to explain my logic! I love mumsnet.

gutted2014 · 10/04/2014 16:13

I have:

-Farm Foods bags for lining the bin (bigger than regular carrier bags)

  • Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury/Co-op everyday bags (Co-op/Sainsbury are slightly smarter)
  • M&S, Debenhams etc plastic bags
  • Plastic bags for life from supermarkets
- Paper bags eg from Monsoon
  • Bags from sports shops with string, that can be worn a bit like a rucksack (shoe cleaning kit kept in one of these Grin)
  • Hessian/jute bags for life from supermarket
  • Cotton bags for life

Categories 1 & 2 are usually used for rubbish, other categories may be used to give presents or return loaned items.

OhNoYouExpedidnt · 10/04/2014 16:20

I do this too. Tesco, Asda and the like are for dirty clothes, shoes, covering pram wheels etc.

Then we have proper plastic bags with the glued on thicker handles.

Then we have the paper bags and posh shop bags.

SpringComeHereYouFabulousSeaso · 10/04/2014 16:20

Yy bloody gap bags. Can't carry them in your hand because they are too long but won't stay on your shoulder either.
I do have lots of reusable bags which I use as often as I can too (always forgetting and leaving them in the car). Those are acceptable for taking things to other people's houses eg spare crockery, side salads etc but not for things which might leak or not be returned.

Dh has just returned. Without the nice bag Hmm

ThefutureMrsTatum · 10/04/2014 16:25

Yes, I do this too. I think I got it from my mum. I'll always remember getting a Morrisons bag out of the bag cupboard ansd her saying "no no, get an M&S one, you have to take it to school", haha, it seems so weird, but I do it now.

I was mortified the other morning when all I had was Tesco and a bargain booze carrier bag to send DD's outfit for a play into school, I ramsacked the house and found a Next bag, phew!!

PatriciaKrenwinkel · 10/04/2014 16:31

Doesn't everyone?

Impatientismymiddlename · 10/04/2014 16:31

Everybody should have a plastic bag hierarchy!

SpringComeHereYouFabulousSeaso · 10/04/2014 16:34

You'd think so Patricia but DH is bemused by the whole thing.

OP posts:
acsec · 10/04/2014 16:38

I love you all! I am a plastic bag hoarder and DH doesn't understand the difference between them at all!

lechers · 10/04/2014 16:42

Oh yes, I totally have a plastic bag hierarchy as has been stated up thread.

But my DH has the audacity to suggest that I'm being unreasonable when I get grumpy that he has given away something in one of my best bags. He just doesn't get that best bags are for me to use, not to. Be given away to randoms.

I may have to show him this thread, as he does think I'm barking Grin.

PrincessOfChina · 10/04/2014 16:47

I still do this and it's all based on the PE kit acceptability mentioned above.

I cherish some of my paper Selfridges bags!

I would add in another layer though - Ikea bags. We bought 20 on our last trip!
