I just realised I have a hierarchy of plastic/carrier bags...

...there's no hope for me is there.

Of course I have had one for years, I just didn't realise:

Crap bags (standard Tesco etc)
Slightly less crap (ocado)
Nice (marks and spencers ones you pay for, also home sense bags)
Best (joules, monsoon, anything made of thick paper)

Dh today took a meal round to a friend, I suggested he took it in a plastic bag in case of leaks and he put it in a nice one Shock. I should probably LTB but in reality I managed to bite my tongue in the face of the hierarchy of bags revelation.

Spring....I am so happy to read this and find it's not only me.

I do Exactly the same but then also the same for paper high end bags Blush

elfycat · 10/04/2014 16:58

I must have married a good'un as DH has more catagories than I did.

I sometimes buy naice supermarket bags which are to house my WorkInProgress knitting or crochet and must never be used for anything else. DH uses the hessian bags for taking his survival kit to the DD's clubs ( coffee kindle etc)

anklebitersmum · 10/04/2014 17:00

I too have a carrier bag hierarchy and send the biters with 'good' ones Grin
They all live in King Carrier Bag by the washing machine.

OldRoan · 10/04/2014 17:03

I hide my best carrier bags at the back of the wardrobe so DP doesn't inadvertently use one...

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 10/04/2014 17:13

Is there a hierarchy for non plastic bags? What's best out of cloth, jute and oilcloth?
We have King Carrier Bag. DH once tried to empty all the others to use Old Kingy. Soon stopped that.

shelldockley · 10/04/2014 17:23

I've done this since a teenager and the obligitary River Island bag years. Used to have a family friend that shopped in designer stores and he always gave me his bags for my collection!

Catagories:
Supermarket carrier bags: prefer Asda or Coop for the bin bag, Tesco and Sainsburys don't fit right, but they are back-ups.
High Street shops: one of each shop is kept in case of returns (just recently had a sort through and had to chuck about 2 carrier bags full of carrier bags coz they were taking up the whole cupboard!)
Mini high street bags: Accessorize little ones etc, v handy for wrapping a water bottle in etc.
Posh shop bags: Hotel Chocolate etc, kept for loaning things or taking presents - though I mostly buy gift bags...love these too!)
Bags for life: Kept for supermarket shopping
Sturdier/posher bags for life: kept for Lidl shopping or transporting bigger things.

OldRoan · 10/04/2014 17:25

We had carrier bags banned at school for competitive bag wars. I feel like I missed out Sad,

NationMcKinley · 10/04/2014 17:27

Ooooo yes! I thought I was the only one! I have a Very Naice plastic carrier bag from Rituals in a special place for when DS goes on school trips. Definite hierarchy here! GrinBlush

BertieBotts · 10/04/2014 17:35

I used to work in CeX and my nephew was in awe of my constant supply of CeX bags. I think they probably fall under the same category as GAP though.

They really did seem to be in high demand. In fact we charged for them, unless you bought over a certain amount and we weren't allowed to give them out even if someone paid the 20p or whatever it was.

lisej · 10/04/2014 17:50

Sigh. Those were the days: When River Island bags were attractive enough to be considered worthy of a school PE kit - way back when River Island was known for selling nice, quality, velvet/swilk/generally classy clothes and not crappy neon tat.

FinallyMrsFC · 10/04/2014 18:02

I can't believe no one has mentioned Chelsea Girl. The absolute bag of choice for PE kit at school.

karamcleod · 10/04/2014 18:10

I remember everyone in my school had Jane Norman bags for PE kits and having to find something to buy just so I could have the carrier bag.
Very glad there are so many of us who have a hierarchy of carrier bags!

tiredandsadmum · 10/04/2014 18:47

I do too! My ultimate top of hierarchy is a Fortnum and mason carrier bag, reserved only for my very best and closest friends!

The closest I got to DS teacher this year was when she too confessed to a hierarchy of bags. The school needed bags for wellies and neither of us would put our best ones in :) (Were they mad thinking we would!)

rmyerspharmacy · 10/04/2014 18:48

Do you have a special bag for your bags?
I have 2- regular supermarket carriers go in one and get used for the bin, thicker (m&s, next etc) ones go in the other and get used again for actually carrying stuff in.
Bags for life are reserved for when travelling due to size and sturdiness.

Iwasagnome · 10/04/2014 18:57

In the late '60s/ early 70s the in thing at school was a large paper carrier bag.
One teacher told us off " for being easily led" when loads of us had Union Jack "I'm Backing Britain" ones.

ijustwanttobeme · 10/04/2014 19:10

Yes yes to all the above, but I am even sadder..

Even the bag I keep the bags in are chosen with hierarchy in mind. Good bags are kept in a good bag and the rubbishy ones are in a Tesco/ asda bag.

Plus, When I pop to asda/ tesco to pick up odd bits, I make sure to put it in Waitrose or Marks bags, that I keep in the car. Wtf is wrong with me?!

unintentionalthreadkiller · 10/04/2014 19:10

I

unintentionalthreadkiller · 10/04/2014 19:11

Oops! Was going to say in tougher everyone did thisGrin

pantshavenames · 10/04/2014 19:23

And oh good lord I am a sucker for 'limited' edition bags. Orla kiely tesco bags and the like. They must only be used to keep very important things at the bottom of the wardrobe.
Apart from the standard bag hierarchy I also have souvenir/status paper bags- the one from M&S in Hong Kong with M&S in Chinese, Liberty bags... (I feel a little out on a limb even on this thread Blush)

notasgreenasimcabbagelooking · 10/04/2014 19:29

I used to have a bag hierarchy! But I live in NI and we pay for bags now!! If it's a "nice" shop-I'll pay the 5p. But not in tesco etc! It does mean I have to buy bags for the bin now which I never did before-so I'm not sure that I'm single handledly saving the polar bear!!!

Creamycoolerwithcream · 10/04/2014 19:30

My best carrier bags are ones I get on special holidays. Sometimes I get them out of their special basket and refold them, give them a quick caress and put them back.

newlark · 10/04/2014 19:31

Me too! Basic supermarket ones as bin liners, decent ones (M&S clothes, John Lewis, plastic bags for life etc) stashed separately for taking things to school/friends houses, fabric/jute bags for shopping etc. Occasionally I have a clear out and take some of the middle category to one of the smaller local charity shops who appreciate them.

Tootssweet · 10/04/2014 19:32

This is why I love you all on MN - you understand me! I have my plastic bags for appropriate needs & DP just rolls his eyes when I swap about whatever he has used that is not correct for that occasion. My favourites at the moment are a jute bag from Tesco that has I Envy Tunnocks teacakes and for work a canvas bag from Chessington (which was a mn freebie!)

Leskelly · 10/04/2014 19:47

Definitely have a bag hierarchy.
DH hasn't a clue how it works, he even puts canvas bags into the plastic bag holder! Grrr

However, I rate M&S bags the same as Tesco and refuse to pay for them. Have lost count of the number of times my M&S bag has split before making it to the car.

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 10/04/2014 19:47

When my parents come to stay, my dad's toiletry bag is a carrier bag - and a crap one at that. It really makes me laugh.
