Sodding dog hairs! How do you stop them taking over??

Onwardsandsideways · 08/04/2014 22:02

Help me Mumsnetters, you're my only hope..... The whole house (and every occupant) is covered in dog hair - white, wavy dog hair - and it's doing my head in! Bloody stuff floats everywhere & sticks to everything - how do you keep it under control?

Wear a blindfold?

HoneyDragon · 08/04/2014 22:04

In seriousness .... It got better when I got a Miele. My Dyson seemed to simply blow the hair upward and let in relocate to more interesting places.

AHardDaysWrite · 08/04/2014 22:06

Hoover the dog.

I'm not joking. Ours lies down and lets me run the nozzle attachment all over him. He seems to enjoy the sensation and it keeps hairs to a minimum!

MrsBennetsEldest · 08/04/2014 22:09
  1. Shave the dog.
  2. Wrap dog in cling film .
  3. Leave dog as is and wrap everyone/ everything in cling film.
  4. Keep dog damp at all times.
  5. Buy a furminator, take dog outside and give it a good grooming as per instructions.
  6. Hoover the dog.
Iatemyskinnyperson · 08/04/2014 22:11

Place marking in case someone has the solution!

I have coped with some serious real life shit but dog hair almost sent me postal.

We have the Worlds Stupidest Labrador, with the added benefit of staggering hair loss. How the fecker isn't bald I don't know. You can even see the hair on the driveway TarmacBlush

I have no solutions. I vacuum regularly, but he trudges in, shakes himself and off we go again.

Every single thing we own is covered in dog hair. Things we are yet to buy probably have it too.

PartyConfused · 08/04/2014 22:15

We have a roomba which I set to go off every night. It helps so much. We have 2 huge dogs that shed everywhere and it seems to float up onto everything! The roomba isn't a solution, but it does help to keep me sane.

Ours wont allow the vacuuming appriach Hard Sad.

PartyConfused · 08/04/2014 22:15

Oh, and they have a robot vacuum in aldi this week.

Onwardsandsideways · 08/04/2014 22:19

Ohh that's cheered me up - not just me then! Sadly, dog is scared of Hoover so hoovering her not an option. Love the 'wrap dog in cling film' MrsBennett - what's a furminator?

OP posts:
HoneyDragon · 08/04/2014 22:30

I use a furminator fir my labs undercoat and a Zoom Groom for the top coat, the zoom groom is ace.

After years of Labrador sheddage I also believe diet helps too.

But not enough Hmm

Onwardsandsideways · 08/04/2014 22:33

What do you feed yours HoneyDragon? Ours was on JamesWellBeloved for the first year we had her (rescue dog) then went off it & we've tried a few, now on Vets Kitchen.

only wear white fluffy clothes

Sandthorn · 11/04/2014 08:56

Next time, get a Kerry Blue terrier (well, that's my plan).

We deal with ours with a combination of the Miele, rubber brush for the dog, sticky clothes roller for us, no dogs upstairs or on furniture, and generally low standards.

IME nothing beats daily brushing for the offenders. At this time of year, brush them outside and leave the hair in the middle of the lawn for the birdies to take off to line their nests.

madasa · 12/04/2014 09:57

I have two ragdoll cats. I keep Lakeland sticky mitts in car/desk etc. for my clothes.

I vacuum and two minutes later they are both rolling around the carpets in glee.

I am going to try hoovering them this morning

Birdsgottafly · 12/04/2014 13:34

"What's a Furminator"

Put it in the search engine on Google and Ebay, you will find the size guide.

It is a brush that takes away the under hairs.

It has made a big difference to the amount of hair my German Shepherd sheds indoors.

I bought one for my cats as well, they also she'd less and look better.

HazeltheMcWitch · 12/04/2014 15:19

I was lucky enough to test a Dyson DC54 Animal through MN - and it is honestly amazing! It picks up sooooo much more hair than my previous Vax hoover did. My house has 1 lab, 2x cats, and me with long hair, plus DCs. It really has made a hige difference.

Also in the 'regime' is a furminator - we have a cat one and a dog one. (Go easy with them though, as once I made a rather bald stripe in one of the cats. They cut out the underhairs, I think.) And a slightly dampened rubber glove (or anything rubbery) is great to get hair off clothes or other non-hooverable things.

antimatter · 13/04/2014 23:13

HazeltheMcWitch thanks for commenting about Dyson DC54 Animal

Does it work well on laminate flooring as well?
How about stairs? I think it has an additional brush for them.

My miele is on it's last legs and I think I will buy this Dyson next

hmc · 13/04/2014 23:19

Not being flippant or dismissive, honestly, but I would say learn to care less!

I had an exceptionally heavy shedder (Bernese mountain dog) - I hoovered every other day (Miele cat and dog vacuum cleaner) and have only hard floors downstairs ...and I learnt to live with it

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 13/04/2014 23:38

Once we've sorted out the excess hair could we also please work on something that gets rid of that 'I swam in the ditch today' smell. Hmm

Stinky bloody bastard.

HazeltheMcWitch · 15/04/2014 09:53

antimatter - It works on laminate, it comes with a hard floor head that does the job. For stairs, there is a stair head, but I much refer the smaller turbo head, which has 2 small rotating disks to get up hair. The design means it does not get tangled. Nb the big turbo brush can get tangled, but it is SO easy to clear!

I think the consensus is 'great vacuum, definitely the filter thing seems good, but priced a bit Shock'

antimatter · 15/04/2014 09:59

thanks HazeltheMcWitch

there's offer from Dyson going right now that for that model and trading in an old hoover you get 100 quid off, I am tempted....

peachybums · 15/04/2014 14:42

I have the same problem as op but with 5 cats! They seem to stuck to the three dcs so they can distribute them faster :(

ruby1234 · 15/04/2014 15:54

We have a furminator too - it is great! Can get what seems like a binbag of hair every time. Ours is a lab x, not sure where all the hair comes from really! There is someone on the internet makes dog hair teddies from dog hair - the teddies are made to match your dog - ours is lovely, you need to save the hair up for a while.

As for the 'I swam in the ditch' smell - or our particular favourite 'I rolled in fox or cow poo' smell, try tomato sauce, rub it in prior to bathing then rinse it out - something in the sauce eliminates most of the pong.

spinnergeologist · 15/04/2014 16:23

Another vote for the Dyson, mine has been amazing. We got ours last year in the trade in offer, very glad we did. Its just as good on the hard floor. It is really good at getting into small spaces. Also on good days we brush the dog half way round the park, it helps massively with the shedding indoors.

Oh and the remedy for ditch smell is called the hose. Our dog learned very very fast that cold water on a cold day was not pleasant (one mean owner here).

MewlingQuim · 15/04/2014 16:38

Have carpet instead of laminate. Dog hair blows everywhere on laminate, it stays put on carpet and is easily hoovered up. So glad I got rid of my laminate.

Brush dog regularly. This really helps get the loose hairs out before they drop on the carpet.

I have a new dyson but kept the animal brush head from the old one. New dysons standard brush head is crap for getting up dog hairs. Man in the shop said it would be just as good but he lied Angry

MewlingQuim · 15/04/2014 16:41

antimatter I really wish I had kept my old dyson and just got it fixed. We did the trade in your old dyson for x amount off a new one. New one is truly annoying me Angry
