Curious about how you hang your washing out

My MIL was here the other day, and was in the garden whilst i was hanging washing. She told me i was hanging it wrong.
I hang trousers by the waist, inside out. She says they should be hung by the ankles.
I hang shirts,t-shirts etc, byt the waistband, upside down. She says they should be hung by the shoulders. How foolish of me not to realise i'd been hanging my washing wrong for the past 15 years (sarcastic emotion).
Then i got thinking about my mums washing. She only hangs things on the outside lines of her rotarty drier- then moans cos she has loads of damp washing waiting to be dried. She also hangs pants by the waist, with 2 pegs, so everyone passing by can see them! Also everything is inside out when she hangs it to dry

So now i'm curious (and nosey), how does everyone else hang their washing

Northerner, frankly with a toddler, a job and a law degree to finish the last thing on my mind is how my washing line looks!

It is important for dark/bright colours when we get the odd UK heatwave - things can bleach very unevenly in the sun. Like i said my stuff it doens't matter too much usually but i do have a favourite skirt that was dark brown but now has lighter brown streaks across it cos I dried it outside in the hot sun without turning it inside out.

ROFL at northerner's presentable washing line!

alligator, my mum did sheets like that too but with both middles pegged up, soo I do too (and with duvet covers). The wind still seems to get in but they're less likely to loop the loop.

Clary · 15/08/2006 14:22

who knew that there was such interest in washing??

(well me actually)

Alligator I can't understand that sheet pegging tip but feel I need to....

Clary · 15/08/2006 14:33

oh no reading it again I think I've got it now. Must try that too.

MN, a great source of the everyday lifesaver!

Riab, you could always buy some machine dye and restore your favourite skirt (and anything else with tricky stains or that you just don't like the colour of.) I tend to dye things blue a lot for these reasons, made a gorgeous green t-shirt for DS from a yucky mustard one once.

Haven't read the whole thread but I think there is an old wives tale that goes something like:- Wear it on top hang it by the bottom, wear it on the bottom hang it by the top.

Although I hang my knickers by the gusset!

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 15/08/2006 16:16

I hang trousers from the waist, t-shirts from the waist, pants from the waist.... I hang everything by the waist! Only hang nice underwear on the outside line mind. Dont want the neighbours seeing my bridgit joneses

iota · 15/08/2006 16:17

trousers - waistband
T shirts - under the armpits
shirts - bottom
knickers - 1 peg wherever
socks - 1 peg wherever

but mainly they go in the tumble dryer

ForFawkesSake · 15/08/2006 16:19

Shirts, tshirts etc by the waist so that the breeze blows through the arms. Trousers, however I pull em out the basket. Don't bother what's inside out personally would wish that everything was the right way out so I didn't have to put them the right way. Smalls go on a multipeg thingie

JoolsToo · 15/08/2006 16:20

wish I could post a picture my friend took of their neighbours line - each item had about 20 odd pegs in!!!

I hange tops over the line and peg under the armpits never from the bottom, pants from the waistband - all items inside out

Bozza · 15/08/2006 16:21

Never sure what to do with dresses though....

Naughtynoonoo · 15/08/2006 16:23

tops by their bottoms and bottoms by their tops

Naughtynoonoo · 15/08/2006 16:25

old manky underwear - insite the line, sexy stuff - outside (to give thy neighbour a cheap thrill - in his dreams), this is one the the rotary lines.

MadameButterfly · 15/08/2006 16:31

I hang tops and trousers from the waist & socks by the toes 9in pairs if possible). Pants only get 1 peg each and go on the inside lines of my rotary drier.

I have a 4 section line so I have 1 section for my clothes, 1 for DD's and 1 for DP's, the other one is use for towels and undies.

Most of my dresses are button through, so they get hung by the bottom, but I tens to hang DD's dresses by the shoulders.

I never thought there would be so many replies! I laughed when i read the post about having matching pegs for your washing. That's another of MIL's tricks. Once she was hanging things out, and she had two shirts left, and one peg each in red, blue green and a wooden one. Rather than hang the things out with un-matching pegs, she took the 2 items in and dried them in the drier!
I invested in one of those multi-peg things today for undies. I had two when DS1 was born and they were great for all the bibs, baby socks, baby-gros etc, saved using lots of pegs.
