Curious about how you hang your washing out

My MIL was here the other day, and was in the garden whilst i was hanging washing. She told me i was hanging it wrong.
I hang trousers by the waist, inside out. She says they should be hung by the ankles.
I hang shirts,t-shirts etc, byt the waistband, upside down. She says they should be hung by the shoulders. How foolish of me not to realise i'd been hanging my washing wrong for the past 15 years (sarcastic emotion).
Then i got thinking about my mums washing. She only hangs things on the outside lines of her rotarty drier- then moans cos she has loads of damp washing waiting to be dried. She also hangs pants by the waist, with 2 pegs, so everyone passing by can see them! Also everything is inside out when she hangs it to dry

So now i'm curious (and nosey), how does everyone else hang their washing

I put everything on hangers and hang it on a wheely rail and put that on the terrace/patio I have one of those little plastic things with loads of pegs for socks and knickers.Don't put pegs on clothes at all

Neena28 · 15/08/2006 10:38

Do jeans by their ankles and linen trousers but normal trousers by the waist. Do t shirts and tops the same as you. But I hang tops with sleeves right way out and things without inside out. I think that stops some of the fading, but can't be bothered with ironing things with sleeves once they have been hung inside out. Pants I hang by the side seam so they aren't on display. My 'quirk' is that everything has to have pegs the same colour on it eg tshirt must have two purple pegs on the bottom seam. Annoys the hell out of me if they haven't.

mummyhill · 15/08/2006 10:41

According to my Gran you stretch towels cause they shrink.

I hang everything rightway in by waist bands. Undies go in the dryer though.

JessaJam · 15/08/2006 10:59

trousers by ankles (cos the waistband is thicker material and needs max. air to dry through ) (max air! sounds like I'm on about surfing/skateboarding!!!) and sometime use the space on the line between the ankles to peg a sock or 2!!

Tops upside down (otherwise the sleeves sort of dangle against the 'body' and don't get so much air, surely?)

knickers get 1 peg, randomly somewhere on them...or dried inside on rack-y thing

mistersmum · 15/08/2006 11:04

Good idea about hanging trousers inside out if dark! I left my DH's favourite trousers on the line for two days in the sun (remember the sun!) and they are now a lighter shade of pale!!

MerlinsBeard · 15/08/2006 11:05

before our line broke, i hung trousers by the hem and t shirts by the bottom. never thought about which way out they just ended up whichever way they came out the machine! Never hang underwear out, that goes in dryer and bras get hung over bedroom radiator. we only have one garden so anyone walking up the path can see our undies if they are on the line!

Also once had a lecture from my nana about the way u put pegs on, apparently you're supposed to hook one side of your item away from you and peg it and the other side towards you and peg so that in a strong wind you won;t lose your item....??

NomDePlume · 15/08/2006 11:06

I hang pretty much everything upside down

Trousers by the ankles
T-shirt/shirts/tops by the waist
Pants - like Jessa
Socks I hang by the tops, in pairs.

SpaceCadet · 15/08/2006 11:08

knickers, bras, socks, other smalls all hang by one peg on the inside lines of the rotary airer.
working outwards with larger heavier stuff.
trousers by ankles
tops by waists.

SoupDragon · 15/08/2006 11:08

You're meant to hang things like T sh-rts etc so the line runs under the arms. It minimises stretching.

I, however, peg them by the hem!
Trousers go waistband up because the top bit is thicker and the bit you peg at the top dries quicker.

NomDePlume · 15/08/2006 11:10

Spacecadet put it better than I did.

UrsulatheSeawitch · 15/08/2006 11:16

Same as soupy, everything inside out. My line isn't very long so to fit a load on it all gets hung with side seams quite close together (iyswim), and I try to get the open bit facing the wind so it can blow right through (helps get ride of creases!)

Knicks get one peg each v close to the house.

Wallace · 15/08/2006 11:19

Snap spacecadet.

Also I hang things either inside out or rightway round depending on which way they happen to be when they come out of the machine...

Piffle · 15/08/2006 11:19

any fitted decent t shirts I hang under the armpits, to avoid mis shaping around the waist.
My neighbours hang work shirts out by the collars, it look well weird IMO
Trousers by the waist band of course I loathe ironing so any visible peg marks are a no no

marthamoo · 15/08/2006 11:23

I hang things right way out, but peg inside, iyswim - so the peg marks don't show. So trousers from the waist, but the pegs inside the waistband, T-shirts from the hem, but pegged inside. I don't care how I peg out dh's boxers and the boys' pants but my knickers I peg by the crotch, all at the very far end of the garden.

Just after I'd had ds1 and dh was doing the washing I glanced out of the window to see he'd pegged out all my hideous, tummy-covering maternity pants that I was still wearing after the birth, corner to corner all along the washing line so they could be seen in all their greying and slightly stained glory. I nearly died.

JonesTheSteam · 15/08/2006 11:24

I hang everything inside out, so that peg marks are on the inside.

Trousers and skirts by the waist band

T-shirts, fitted tops etc, I hang doubled over the line with the peg under the armpits. I found if I hang them by the waist or shoulders they go out of shape.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 15/08/2006 11:46

I hang things inside out in case one side gets more bleached than the other (wouldn't mind a bit of all-over bleaching but you can't guarantee it.)
I'm another non-ironer so I tumbledry little things that don't crease, like socks, pants, kidswear, nappy liners & wipes etc but do hang out nappies & boosters. My DH drives me made by folding the tops of the nappies over for extra security but it means they get damp patches grrr.

Clary · 15/08/2006 12:18

polagra I have the Asda ones as well but they are not as good. Try to save the nice Lakeland ones for best T shirts but it does add time to the pegging out job, which I am so often doing at 7am, before going to work....

neena, I used to match clothes and pegs before I had children!

Great tip about stretching Ts tho piff and jones, might change the ay I do that then (esp with my fancy Boden ones )

riab · 15/08/2006 12:20

Trousers by the ankles yes cos it streches them less, but you're completly right about tshirts by the hem. If you hang tops by the shoulders they develop 1980's style shoulder pad shapes!

Knickers and socks I tend to peg onto one of those 'multipeg' hangers you get from lakeland or similar.

I know I should hang certian thigns inside out to avoid bleaching but then I rationalise that very few of my clothes are the types of things that need to be kept looking 'crisp' (i wear surfer gear) and a bit of fading looks better on denim.

themoon66 · 15/08/2006 12:32

Trousers by the waistband, whatever style they are. The water runs downwards so the waistband dries first that way.

T-shirts - by the bottoms on the very tips of the side seams and all linked together (ie: 2 t-shirts require only 3 pegs)

Knickers - one peg in a side seam.

Socks, from the tops in pairs.

charliecat · 15/08/2006 12:35

I throw mine over the line and hope they dry.

Bozza · 15/08/2006 12:39

I was doing the 7 am or rather 6.45 am washing hang out this morning clary...

Mascaraohara · 15/08/2006 12:44

I hang trousers by the ankles, shirts/t-shirts by the waist. All inside out. knickers by the gusset and socks in pairs

Northerner · 15/08/2006 12:48

My mum tells me to peg t shirts/tops under the arms. Throw them over line and peg under the arm so if you get a peg mark you don't see it.

I could never hang things in side out, surely your washing line looks awful like this?

Mascaraohara · 15/08/2006 12:54

Habit as my mum once got a wasp in her jeans or something.. heard the tale a million times so besides fadin it also stops things getting put away with any insects inside them..

alligator · 15/08/2006 13:26

I do the stringing things together thing to themoon66. I never have enough pegs otherwise.

so how do people hang their sheets? I do four corners pegged (2 corners to one peg but each corner over the line from the opposite side) and then one peg in the middle holding up just one side. My mum taught me this way as it apparently gets the breeze in to dry faster and reduces creasing.
