Why do people have separate laundry baskets for babies?

A Tip of the Day this week said to get a dirty linen bin especially for your baby as it's nice to wash them separately.
I'm confused, why is it nice? Why can't they go in with other people's clothes? Doesn't it make more work sorting things twice?

Ds has his own basket, and his stuff is washed on it's own on allergy setting (a really warm wash with an extra rinse). It saves money because dh and I wash our clothes in cold water.

Also ds's clothing does in his room when clean and dh & I's clothing goes in our room - so it makes sense to keep them apart.

no room in ours - only wash once a week and so one big basket for 2 dds and one for dh and I.

no ideas for hte one intergalacticwalrus - mine puts it on top of the closes basket.

My DD has her own basket, but I grab some from each basket for every wash, that way I know that all will have at least some clean clothes the next day.....

I never washed DD seperately when she was a baby (or since), image how many babygrows it would have taken to fill the washing machine....

DD has a frog basket from ikea and she loves it, always puts her clothes in there when she takes them off and she is only 2.8 yrs so hope for me yet that I won't have a bad back from picking clothes up from the floor (except mine of course)...

Don't ask me! I still have separate one for the children. Guess it stops our one from overflowing all the time.

Do they ? How very odd, some people are very strange. My laundry basket has got three compartments so it's easier to sort the wash into whites, colours, delicates

Eidsvold....... once a week?!!!!!!! How on earth do you manage that. I've got a monster Bosch 9kg drum and do at least 2 washes a day. How I envy you !

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 18/08/2006 21:12

Kittywitts I thought I'd invented that idea! I was telling my sister one day and she looked confused and said 'but I've got one of those.' I still haven't got round to buying one yet, will do when the kids are bigger - they're always helping me sort the dirty washing but haven't twigged that I'm not just randomly throwing it about like them

We had two canvas bags on the back of the door for dirty baby clothes, one for white, one for colours.
The main reason was I only ever got round to washing DS's clothes in the first few weeks and me and DP just steadily worked through our clean clothes until it got to the point we only had ancient 'smashing pumpkins' t shirts and ripped jeans etc left, or DP finally gave in and did some laundry himself. lol
for this reason seperating was easier than having to sort through all the dirty laundry. Plus it seemed 'nice' at the time, but didn't last long. heehee.

babyonboard · 19/08/2006 09:10

lol at 'ironing babgros and muslins'
My aunt bought DS some sleepsuits when he was born and said 'I bought velour as it's so much easier to iron so it will save you time'
I couldn't help but giggle...

I don't wash DD's clothes seperately but she does have her 'own' linen basket. It was handy to just lob sicky babygros in when changing her but also she is now so used to have her own she now puts all her dirty washing in her basket without being told too and tells me when it is getting full and needs washing (she is 3 going on 13)

threebob · 19/08/2006 20:38

I've just put my washing on and think I should inform you all that I have a washing basket just for towels.
