Why do people have separate laundry baskets for babies?

A Tip of the Day this week said to get a dirty linen bin especially for your baby as it's nice to wash them separately.
I'm confused, why is it nice? Why can't they go in with other people's clothes? Doesn't it make more work sorting things twice?

i don't even (gulp) use a conditioner...

MrsBadger · 10/08/2006 13:26

me either
waste of money and the smell follows you around all day
I use expensive body lotion instead

bottersnike · 10/08/2006 13:26

"get a dirty linen bin especially for your baby as it's nice to wash them separately."

I don't think it's very nice to put a baby in a bin. Mine just go in the bath.

MrsBadger · 10/08/2006 13:26

on my body obviously, not on the laundry

Tommy · 10/08/2006 13:31

we do sometimes when we don't have enough for 2 loads. I think we should just do one load too and wash eveything in non bio.
In fact, I think we will
(decision made )

GaribaldiCusack · 10/08/2006 13:32

can't see the point of fabric conditioner either
too many chemical smells around the place already - can't stand 'em

Orlando · 10/08/2006 13:47

(Bucketsofdinosaurs it was a rather pathetic joke around the idea of putting babies in laundry baskets. Sorry. Kids waging noisy war all around as I read your thread title and it made me smile a small miracle today.)

intergalacticwalrus · 10/08/2006 13:52

That's the oddest suggestion I have evr heard! If you are worried about losing small items, put them in a net laundry bag! When I do DS's nappies, I wash other whites too. I don;t care.

intergalacticwalrus · 10/08/2006 13:53

Mind you, does anyone here have a suggestion of how I can get DP to out his clothes in the laundry basket rather than in front of it?

TIA

aitch71ababe · 10/08/2006 13:56

sorry intergalacticwalrus, you've lost me... they can put them in the basket? i did not know that. thought it was only oestrogen-fuelled beings who could do that...

popmum · 10/08/2006 13:57

mine do. simply cos i can take off the clothes, pop them in their own baskets and when i need to wash their stuff i do! the kids stuff gets washed separately from ours because they use a sensitive washing powder and also i find it easier when it comes to putting it all away, less sorting to be done.
hope that is ok!

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 10/08/2006 14:04

OK next question, now what about ironing? Hands up who's ever ironed a baby sleepsuit? Or a muslin?

I don't even iron my own clothes

MrsBadger · 10/08/2006 14:08

I once ironed a...

...handkerchief

to be fair it was for DH for our wedding and I could see myself needing it!

mawbroon · 10/08/2006 14:11

I run the washing machine every morning and it's a mix of everyone's clothes and done with no fabric conditioner.

Ironing never used to happen ever until DH got a desk job so now I have to do his shirts.

Another question - I knew someone that HAD to wash her dd's clothes again if they got rained on while they were on the line. I reckon she was the only person ever to do that. Or is she??

Kif · 10/08/2006 14:13

The only thing I iron is Dh work shirts. I've discovered (now that I'm preggers and all clothes stretched tightly over bump) that I can get away with an unironed T-shirt worn under smart jacket!

Ironing with kids is a nightmare! I wouldn't leave the iron on and unattended, so i end up plugging and unplugging every time I get distracted - not to mention sticky fingered helpers.

Bozza · 10/08/2006 14:15

I hvae been known to stick stuff back in the machine for another spin if they come off the line completely dripping.

Kif · 10/08/2006 14:15

I've had rain turn my line-dried clothes muddy... perhaps that's what she means.

I remember wondering how that worked?!? Muudy rain?!?

mawbroon · 10/08/2006 14:16

But that seems sensible Bozza - a spin, not a whole new wash just because the stuff got rained on!

MrsBadger · 10/08/2006 14:17

ah, that's because when raindrops form they condense around 'foci of condensation', which usually means dust particles etc in the atmosphere.
Rain ain't that clean!

nuckingfutjob · 10/08/2006 14:17

Bottersnike...snurk

Quootiepie · 10/08/2006 14:17

I wash DSs clothes alone... I dont want his things going in with my smelly undies!

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 10/08/2006 14:30

I don't iron full stop. DH does his own work shirts because I don't see what the point is if he's going to sit in a car for an hour to get to work. Occasionally I might ask him to iron a skirt if I haven't hung it up to dry properly. I've also taken to hanging up clean dry unironed shirts in his wardrobe to see if he notices or cares.
