How do I clean a Pure ONE radio that feels sticky?!

My dh bought the Pure ONE Classic Series II Black DAB Digital Radio for our kitchen and after some time it has become grubby and sticky. I have tried to wipe it but the greasy feeling won't budge!
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it, it's quite gross?

Bit of an old thread, so I doubt anyone will ever see it, but had this problem, sent it back, new radio. They didn't say if this was a design fault, this sticky kitchen radio horror, but no quibbles. OH reckons it's just that if you've been bothered to send it something back, they just send out discontinued stock, which this may well be. But hell, new unsticky radio so not complaining. Go to their site and send them an email if you want to see if this works for you too. :-)

I have always kept my radio in the bedroom and it still became sticky, thank you for the cleaning tips

PhilipT · 09/11/2015 16:55

Same problem, same Pure black 'soft feel' radio. Mine has been used in a home office - no steam, no chemicals - nothing environmental at all. It took maybe two years to get sticky and nothing I've yet found will clean it. I'll give methylated spirit a go, so thanks for the suggestion. It is so sticky that it actually leaves my hands sticky after touching it, so I'll be delighted if it works.

P1nkP0ppy · 09/11/2015 17:52

I've tried just about everything including Stickystuff, without any luck.
It's gross so any further suggestions very welcome.

Wish I could afford to replace it.

P1nkP0ppy · 09/11/2015 17:58

I've tried just about everything so look forward to hearing if anything works.......

I had the same problem. I got in touch with Pure customer service and they asked me to return the radio, on receipt they sent me a replacement. Which so far has not become sticky.

I have both series 1 & 2 Pure Classic radios that became sticky overtime, I have overcome the problem quite easily by using Methyalated Spirit. It takes a little bit of patience and care by using a small cotton cloth & toothbrush for the grill and buttons. The aim is to remove the substance 100% on the front, top & rear (sides optional), the methylated spirit will remove the substance and take it back to a shiny & smooth surface which looks good. The stickyness which forms over time has nothing to do with where your radio is sited kitchen or study.

No answers here but our kitchen-living pure radio is also sticky, and several attempts to clean it have failed!

I know this an old thread but in case anyone is interested I just tried using a paste made of bicarbonate of soda and a bit of water and it worked like a dream. Hardly any rubbing, used a cotton bud to get into the corners around the aerial, now got a nice shiny radio! Very pleased!

CatherineLF · 12/01/2018 16:49

This might link to your rubber problems: I have just got the children's ski helmets out of the cupboard and they were really sticky, covered in fluff and unpleasant to touch. Reached for the Cif ,which normally does the trick, but it didn't. Looked on line and saw suggestions regarding 70% Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol and Baking powder. Thought I would give the powder a go, as I had it in the cupboard. Made a damp paste and used a green scourer and some elbow grease - worked a treat! Fantastic!

DressAndGo · 12/01/2018 18:33

Shock I have exactly the same problem!

Itsmeaga1n · 26/08/2018 19:01

I know this is an old thread but I have this problem too. I've tried white spirit, vegetable oil, vinegar, washing up liquid and a scourer... Nothing worked.

Belle12345 · 26/08/2018 19:10

Sent our pure one back and they replaced it because of this reason sent us a brand new one different model as they don't do that one good customer service as it was well over 2 years old couldn't clean it at all this was about two months ago as well c

Itsmeaga1n · 26/08/2018 22:06

That's good to hear. I've emailed them about it. Did you contact them first or just send it?

Belle12345 · 27/08/2018 07:00

@Itsmeaga1n no I emailed them first to explain about the outside casing x

Itsmeaga1n · 28/08/2018 12:43

Thanks. I've emailed them too.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 28/08/2018 13:18

I would just use a very slightly damp microfibre cloth

Itsmeaga1n · 02/09/2018 01:46

Thanks, sadly that didn't work.

I've emailed Pure and they have said they will repair or replace my radio.

TheMikkster · 29/10/2018 13:42

Thanks FreeButtonBee! I used concentrated sugar soap and a microfibre cloth which worked well. Someone should tell the manufacturer (not me!)

Haveyougotahandkie · 23/12/2018 09:52

It has nothing to do with the kitchen. My Pure radio has spent all its life in the bedroom and it is just as sticky. Going try meths and teatree oil now

pablo1827 · 01/02/2019 13:34

I just cleaned my dab pure radio in seconds. Remembered an old trick we did in the fire service to clean black rubber fire boots. Shoe polish! Just apply it to the rubber surface on the radio and buff off when dry. You can use cotton buds to get into any difficult corners.

axdw33442 · 11/02/2019 06:29

Its soft touch coating they put on many plastic items now, it is a type of paint, it degenerates over time, and as such is inbuilt obsolescence, / i think its cheap skate , but any how, I have worked in industry, and when refurbishing this type of product , we strip off with isopropinol alcohol, and worst ever re paint it !!!!! , on my own products I try to avoid the rubbish, or clean it off at new with the alcohol solution, as it will always degenerate to sticky slimuck , its not really fit for purpose.

Weathergirl1 · 11/02/2019 17:27

I managed to revamp two Radley umbrella handles and a pair of binoculars that had gone like this, with 100% proof vodka we had kicking around in the cupboard! Good as new. I'm got a portable solar charger to do next (when I get round to it)!

Sticky coating to Pure One radio!
I have tried cellulose thinners, turpentine, neat washing-up liquid, WD40, pickling vinegar all to no avail.
On the flat areas, I removed some with a well worn paint scraper and then attacked each patch with my wife's hairspray (supposedly good for biro ink) and an old flannel. A minor success for it's going to take many goes.
As it is late, I am going to try the fireman's boot polish trick tomorrow.

pantman42 · 11/04/2019 00:23

Perservering with hairspray to removesticky rubber from my radio. I am afraid the fireman's boot polish remedy is how he kept his rubber boots shiny not to remove rubber. I am concerned that firemen were expected to add a flammable polish to their rubber boots. Long overdue but I believe county councils have been forced to fund leather boots.
I do not wish to spend any more on this disastrous exercise but if were to do so, my last effort would be to spend £7-50 on rubber removing spray (racing drivers use to remove racetrack rubber from the car's bodywork).
My radio is no longer sticky but shiny in places and dull in others!
I know, I'll varnish it! Stop at this point and accept that it is a lot better than it was. I don't want to change it as I bought the £30 chargepak so I can take it in the bathroom and the garden. Good luck
