How long does it take to fill your Dyson?

I usually vacuum with a Miele cylinder but got the old upright Dyson out yesterday whilst attempting a pre Spring clean session.
Was rather surprised and disgusted that I filled the dust cannister with one vacuum of the house (average sized 3 bed semi with carpet throughout upstairs and in 2 rooms downstairs.
Thinking of retiring the Miele as it clearly isn't doing a very good job but need something to vacuum wooden floors (old Dyson upright is only suitable for carpet)

I have a Vax upright vacuum and a two bedroom apartment with cream carpets; one baby, two adults and no pets.

I fill the cylinder to full everytime I hoover. Boak.

But I just assume my hoover is amazing. Grin

I find Dysons fill up really quickly, no matter how often you vacuum. DH's theory is that somehow the way Dysons spin expands the dirt, like candyfloss!

SweetPeaPods · 27/01/2014 11:35

Exactly that. I could Hoover the house and fill the canister, then empty. If I then hoovered the lounge again it would pick more up. Where does it come from unless I'm a dirty slattern

Beehatch · 27/01/2014 11:37

Yes full every time, it's horrifying!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 27/01/2014 11:38

I can fill it doing1/2- 2/3rds the house (4bed, six people). Both I and the dog moult a lot though.
I do hard floors with mine. There a button to switch across to the setting with no brushes

BeckAndCall · 27/01/2014 11:39

I've got a an equivalent upright and yes, mine is full after every Hoover around the house!
Make sme feel good knowing that amount of dirt is no longer on the floor. But also feel yuk that it was there in the first place!

If you have a Miele and it isn't sucking well, clean it internally and wash al the filters. Ours has three. You may need to find the instructions. It is very difficult to find a better vac.

The new white or silver bags are more resistant to clogging, and also give less dust in the exhaust.

ThatBloodyWoman · 27/01/2014 14:13

I can fill the dyson just doing the front room.

But I don't hoover on a daily basis.

I don't always hoover on a weekly basis......

loveliesbleeding1 · 27/01/2014 15:33

It is shocking how quickly it fills up, but I am quite strict with emptying it.It cost a lot of money (2 years ago) and im slightly paranoid I might break it.its a cylinder, it automatically goes from carpet to hard floors,

Oblomov · 27/01/2014 15:54

Fills up , with just doing downstairs.
FRIGHTENING.

Reastie · 27/01/2014 18:34

Wow, I think ours takes maybe a couple of weeks to fill up, and that's just downstairs as we have a separate upstairs hoover. Why doesn't mine fill up as quick as yours?! We don't have shoes on indoors, maybe that makes a difference Hmm

PowderMum · 27/01/2014 18:40

Just got a new Dyson here, 4 bed, 4 people and a cat, it needs emptying once the whole house is done.
Used to have a Miele that only needed the bag changing once a month or so.
I can see the difference

LumpySpacePrincessOhMyGlob · 27/01/2014 19:33

My dyson takes weeks to fill up.

I Hoover every day though and regularly wash my carpets with a vax.

cherryhealey · 27/01/2014 20:38

Approx 2 weeks to fill up.
Again no shoes and use the Dyson every day.
Also shampoo carpets twice a year.
Use it on hard floors too just hit the 'disable brush bar bit'

LakeFlyPie · 27/01/2014 21:04

Thanks everyone, glad it's not just me that lives in a dust bucket of a house.

Agree about the candy floss machine properties toykitchen

Will look up manual PigletJohn, I change the disposable filter when I change the bag on the Miele so perhaps there are others I should be doing too, I thought the suction was OK on it but the Dyson suggests otherwise.

It's an old Dyson (Lime / Silver one) and I don't think it has a disable brush bar switch, hence why I got the Miele when we had wooden floors fitted, I'll check online for manual for that one too, would be great if I could use it on wooden floors could get rid of Miele to make space in cleaning cupboard for the steam cleaner I've convinced myself we need

loveliesbleeding1 · 28/01/2014 10:24

Sixpencenonethericher · 29/01/2014 10:55

My dyson fills up every day but I have to Hoover the whole house every day , husky Goldie and 3 cats dh me and dd

DickCrack · 30/01/2014 01:04

Why can't you use the brush bit on hard floors? Only I've not been turning my brush off to do them.
I fill mine up by doing whole house, 3 beds, two living rooms, kitchen diner. 2 adults, 2 dcs, no pets. It's always chock full of grey dust.

KungFuBustle · 30/01/2014 22:06

I love Dyson. I remember the first time I hoovered my mattress.....

I can fill it in one go, 3 adults and 3 hairy pets.

ThePearShapedToad · 31/01/2014 13:39

We're meant to hoover the mattress??

runs off screaming that I am slattern

(I never knew) Blush

PigletJohn · 31/01/2014 14:07

mattresses accumulate shed skin cells, which dust mites feed on, and their droppings often cause eye and snout allergies.

KungFuBustle · 01/02/2014 11:10

I was a slattern until the first time I did it Pear. MN recommended I start with an empty hoover, I did, it was horrifying lord, the dust.

ThePearShapedToad · 01/02/2014 14:36

Oh good grief. Will try the dyson on it tomorrow.
