Does anyone have 2 dishwashers? Does it work?

We'll be getting a new kitchen and I'm hoping to get 2 slimline dishwashers. Mainly to not have to keep emptying. We're a family of 5 and our current full size goes on 2 or 3 times every day.

Any thoughts? Thanks

you can also get them with two big drawers that can be run independently, but very expensive.

I've often thought it would be great to have two dwrs, then nothing would ever have to be put away.

Interested in hearing views from others - so marking my place !

magimedi · 06/01/2014 11:09

The pitfall Ican see ieople putting dirty stuff in the dishwasher that is currently housing the clean stuff.

magimedi · 06/01/2014 11:10

I can see

is people

Fat fingers!

ARealPickle · 06/01/2014 11:13

Some friends of ours did this and said worked really well.

CarriesPawnShop · 06/01/2014 11:16

Just get one that has a quick cycle - we generally run 2x30 minute cycles a day and an eco one overnight. I would have thought the kitchen space and cost for 2 slimline ones vs the actual amount of stuff you could get in would mean a 14/16 place setting dw with short cycle would be a better deal.

My parents have this in their kitchen. It is brilliant as they can do lots of mini washes and don't have to wait for for full size machine to be full. They also do lots of entertaining so quite often have one running full of glasses etc and the other with pots, pans and stuff that needs heavy washing. When it is just the two of them and they are feeling lazy then they just take plates, cutlery from the clean one, use them and then put them in the other dishwasher.

You do need quite a big kitchen and though and to always remember which one is clean/ dirty. If we had a large enough kitchen I would definitely do this rather than one big one.

Sleepwhenidie · 06/01/2014 11:23

I have two full sized ones (5 of us too) - it doesn't work quite as I imagined, as PJ says, I thought nothing would ever need putting away, but in reality I find that when I want something in particular I like knowing where to find it immediately rather than hunting through a dishwasher to find it. I do have the d/w's close to cupboards housing crockery/glasses etc though, so unpacking also takes just a couple of minutes, no need to walk anywhere with 80% of the stuff I can reach. It does work brilliantly for me though in that there are never any dirty dishes hanging around - if one d/w is running, the other is being gradually filled - and one is always full part way through the day, running once every day after dinner never worked when we just had one. Works fantastically well in our house where there are people around all day and constantly using crockery. Also fantastic after having lots of people for dinner, clearing up feels really easy.

fisher * paykel twin dishwasher

BloooCowWonders · 06/01/2014 13:32

Sounds positive on the whole. I'm definitely leaning towards 2x slimline rather than the drawer type. I can see us having to empty them into cupboards sometimes, not just every mealtime.

Might need to invest in a 'CLEAN' sign to stick on each door as nec...

My parents have this. Big family, big kitchen. It works really well but everyone has been well trained to know not to start filling without making sure there isn't a dirty dishwasher already on the go. It means there's always somewhere for dirty dishes to go rather than cluttering the worktop. I'd do it if my kitchen was big enough.

RandomMess · 06/01/2014 22:10

I would have loved to do this but kitchen is way too small Sad, they are effictively cupboards that wash their contents Grin

I can imagine it's worth investing in a few extra things like potato peeler, sharp knives etc?

MadonnaKebab · 06/01/2014 22:18

We used to have the F&P dish drawer
It works best if you don't have any more crockery/ cutlery than will fit in one drawer (ie you need to get rid of all the extra mugs etc)
That way you never have the problem of finding the dirty washer to be full or washing, but having no time to empty clean washer before dashing out so you end up having to leave breakfast stuff in the sink
We managed to have no visible dishes for years, but it no longer worked once we had kids due to too much stuff

elfycat · 06/01/2014 22:19

I have one of the 2 drawer dishwashers and I love it. One of the problems is that if you need to get a repair man in there are only a few specialists that can sort it. We pay insurance on the appliance and that has been very worth while (I need to call back and see how the top drawer repair is going as it's not working at the moment and is puzzling the expert. If the can't repair they will replace...)

As long as they are standard slimline and can be replaced individually, and repaired by a normal repair man it might be a good option. In fact it is one I shall be discussing with DH.

Weelady77 · 06/01/2014 22:20

I wish I had even just one dishwasherHmm

lalamumto3 · 06/01/2014 22:25

I have 2 full size dishwashers, we are a family of 5 and it works brilliantly. We have a big open plan live in kitchen so it really helps to keep it clean and tidy. I would always have 2 from now on. Personally I would go for 2 full size if you can.

JugglingChaotically · 06/01/2014 22:27

Have friends with 2 full size dishwashers! I would love to - run ours several times a day and with pots and pans can take 3 loads to clear one meal if all home.
Kitchen too small for me to do this - but I can dream.
If you have room, I would have 2 full size mieles!

BloooCowWonders · 06/01/2014 23:14

Now contemplating 2x full size... Grin

I've had a fair few dishwasher breakdowns over the years (v hard water) and the thought of always having a full size back-up is v appealing.

And now I'll be dreaming of 2x washing machines too...

My parents have two, but one is out in the utility room, and only gets used when they are entertaining. Day to day they just use the one in the kitchen.

Kewcumber · 06/01/2014 23:23

Oh to hell with it Bloocow - go for three two in the kitchen and one in the living room then you won;t even have to carry the stuff back into the kitchen!

I have had plumbing for a washing machine put in upstairs and plan to have one upstairs and one downstairs Blush

SavoyCabbage · 06/01/2014 23:28

It is my lifelong dream to have two dishwashers after I saw a friend at high schools mum had two.

Hexbugsmakemeitch · 06/01/2014 23:33

Two? My mind is seriously boggled!

This is why I love Mumsnet, there are people living in worlds I have never imagined!

will not tell DH who will think this is a marvellous idea

BaronessBomburst · 06/01/2014 23:37

I'm another one who opened the thread thinking "er, two dishwashers?" but now I've read it it makes perfect sense.

Pumpkin567 · 08/01/2014 06:48

We contemplated two but tbh I just run one twice a day. If you always put it on in the evening And empty first thing, it's not a problem. I will run it not 100% full (80%) so that I can have it emptied and ready so at not to get to the situation where I have pots hanging about. It has a fast wash for lightly soiled items which is useful.

My mum has a slimline and complains that she can't get big items into it.

karmakoala · 08/01/2014 06:55

What, how??

We are a family of 7 and we only run the dishwasher once a day Shock

However, I tend to go for the tetris approach for all appliances, fridge tetris at christmas is most fun
