Aprons/tabard/overalls - stepford or practical?

Sounds awful doesn't it!

As the sah owner of a 2 year old and one due August I have realised that I have years of small sticky fingers covering me in debris not to mention the other stuff.

It took me a year after having dd to realise that dressing smartly made me feel so much better and I don't want that to stop. I do get fed up of the marks etc though and can't be bothered/don't have time to change everytime we are going out.

So would I be crazy to buy some sort of overall type thing which i could then toss to one side and unveil the cleaner me?

Or is all too 50's for words...

maybe this should be in style

I wear aprons quite often ie whenever I am cooking or doing a big clean. But I wear chefs aprons I had in a previous life, I find them really comfortable, almost secure although I know that sounds weird.
Seriously though - try a catering wholesaler for some really cheap hardwearing ones.

Harold · 13/07/2006 10:30

Winnie and friends enjoying their acceptable aprons

MrsBadger · 13/07/2006 10:37

I still wear my school home ec apron - is a catering-standard one like Carmenere suggested but doens't help on the shoulders.

Thinking of school overalls, we used to have something linke this for science - bit dressing-gowny but ticks all the boxes...

Carmenere · 13/07/2006 10:44

I really like that kimono-style overall thing Mrs Badger

Spagblog · 13/07/2006 10:54

I really wanted a 1940s house coat when the kids were younger. I was stick of having snot trails, milk stains and vomit marks all over me.
I never found the perfect one though. Recently I discovered these and feel myself wanting one again!

Enid · 13/07/2006 10:54

they are fab

southeastastra · 13/07/2006 10:56

spagblog they are a work of art! i would hate to get them dirty!

JackieNo · 13/07/2006 10:56

They are wonderfully retro, aren't they.

Carmenere · 13/07/2006 10:57

I would love one of those too but do you think they would do special ones for mumsnetters that had extra padding around the bottom area for extended computer usage?

MrsBadger · 13/07/2006 11:00

I wonder if a kimono-type wrap, or a kaftan / kurta / kameez, is going to be more stylish than a tabard or a housecoat - easy to sling on and off too...

Now, if only you were a man you could wear a smoking jacket ...

Spagblog · 13/07/2006 11:01

LOL! Built in cushioned bottom for mumsnetting!
I wish I could sew. Maybe if I find a pattern I could get my mum to have a go at making me one.

JackieNo · 13/07/2006 11:02

But you would have to wear the cravat with it for the full effect.

JackieNo · 13/07/2006 11:03

Patterns here .

JackieNo · 13/07/2006 11:04

I'm sure that it's only in the world of patterns that the word 'misses' is still used.

themoon66 · 13/07/2006 11:07

I solved the problem by just keeping my pyjamas on all day.

Spagblog · 13/07/2006 11:08

Ooh here too

Spagblog · 13/07/2006 11:09

under vintage aprons

MrsBadger · 13/07/2006 11:12

or some seriously vintage patterns \link}http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B4087=x&TI='apron'&page=1\here} , here and here - loving those ruffles!

Spagblog · 13/07/2006 11:14

pmsl, right going to send the links to my mum!

JackieNo · 13/07/2006 11:15

Spagblog - love the petal effect ones. And love those too MrsBadger - you could make the frills extra wide, for snot-catching duties.

winnie · 13/07/2006 11:15

I must stop clicking on these links adn get on with some work

MrsBadger · 13/07/2006 11:15

ooh I love this one - think View 1 might actually be more elegant than the clothes underneath I'd be trying to keep clean...

southeastastra · 13/07/2006 11:17

they're so sweet, we used to make aprons at school as part of home ec

MrsApron · 13/07/2006 11:19

Actually am loving those ones Spagblog! So kitsch!

And thank you for making me not the only one who has considered this!

CheesyFeet · 13/07/2006 11:26

Oh those patterns are fab! Am having fantasies of me & dd baking in the kitchen whilst listening to Frank Sinatra. May just have to order one and buy the floweriest fabric imaginable.

dh will hate it
