Help I have maggots in my bin!!!!

Been on holiday for a week and the bin was emptied today. The combination of hot weather and dirty nappies (even though they were in nappy sacks) has caused the bin to stink and when I looked inside I found some maggots. I have just put some bleach and boiling water inside to kill the maggots but I cant get rid of the smell. Any ideas???

Maybe I wasn't clear enough.

We have two wheely bins. One is for rubbish, One is for recycing. The bin men collect each one on alternate weeks. So we have a list of things we can put into the recyling bin and the council take this once a fortnight.

We are allowed to have more than a bins full of recycling, just leave it by the side of the bin and the bin men will take it.

But they won't take more than a bin full of rubbish, they leave any extra behind. Unless you have a certain amount of people in your house (ie lots) and then you can pay £40 for another rubbish wheely bin.

So I recylce more than a wheely bin each fortnight, along with cans/glass recycling. Now we no longer have a care we will have to walk to the banks.

So I do more than my share as far as I'm concerned.

And yes, if I had to pay for my rubbish to be collected, on top of council tax then I would dump in the street in protest.

So you leave dirty nappies in your dustbin for 6 weeks? Surly thats not hyginic? It must stink no?

Jeyes fluid bin freshener is great.

I double wrap in old newspapers, anything that is potentially smelly or distasteful.

If you have a big freezer, double wrap food and instead of putting in the food waste, put it in the freezer until emptying day.

Put cat litter in the bottom of the bin for any loss of fluid.

Keeping the bin open, allowing the air to circulate, might reduce the 'cooking' effect in very hot weather.

My freezer is full of food and opening the bin would allow the flies in Webme1.

No, the bin doesn't smell that bad and I've never had maggots! I'm not sure why a dustbin is meant to be hygenic, but it sounds better than most on this thread! All nappies go in scented bags, the wheelie bin has a mat of some kind in the bottom (I don't know exactly what it is, its aborbs odours and stuff), and it gets washed out every 3 months or so. Plus its not outside my house, its in a bin store at the end of the block.
We had a major financial incentive to change our habits here. When bin charges were introduced there was war, but know everyone is used to it and the entire country has reduced its reliance on landfill. I'd call that a success for sure.

SOOOOOOO...after reading all this & realising how long ago this was posted...does anyone have a 100% reliable answer to the question "HOW DO I KILL THESE PESKY MAGGOTS"?????!!!!! Mum of 4, who cleans her bins EVERY time they are emptied & is HORRIFIED to have these squirming little buggers all over one of her (4)bins!!!! & if the neighbours knew, they'd be asking for my evicition - hubby out there now (21:46)wrapping bin lid up with cling film to suffocate them, WILL IT WORK??????

I would have to creep out in the night and swap bins with my neighbour i hate maggots.

hi me & my hubby are bin cleaners in the nottinghamshire & derbyshire area we charge £1.50 per bin or all 3 bins for £4.00. If you look on yell.com or the yellow pages you will find some bin cleaners. Even if your bin gets cleaned if you dont bag up the realy smelly stuff you will still get maggots but not as many & it wont be you cleaning it out lol.;)

hi all, this is my first ever post on here.ive had the same maggot problems ever since the council started doing collections every 2 weeks. so i have come up with an invention in prototype at the mo that will stop double bagging ,stop the need to put bleach,boiling water,salt or anything else in your bin to stop maggots.it will be very cheap,and i guarantee will stop you getting maggots.

my question is would anyone buy this from me when its manufactured?????

Just got someone to take the maggot infested rubbish away
