If you don't have the heating on during the day, how cold does it get in your house and what do you wear?

"Just put a jumper on"

In principle I agree, but I'm already wearing cotton long-sleeve top, with a 100% wool jumper over, jeans and woollen socks.

It's 14C in here.

Heating is going on!

I've got a hat and a scarf on.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/11/2013 11:37

Obv other clothes as well. Grin

Hat and scarf on their own would be cold.

I've got a jumper and thick leggings on. Am about to find my slipper boots as feet are cold, might put my dressing gown on as well.

teenagetantrums · 05/11/2013 11:39

its cold in my house, not sure how cold, i have layers on and am sitting under a blanket on the sofa, i don't put the heating on at all if i can help it during the day. It goes on for an hour in the morning when then the teenagers are showering for college, and sometimes in the evening. I have a prepayment meter and it scares me how much gas we use when the heating is on.

dottygamekeeper · 05/11/2013 11:45

I live in my bodywarmer (gilet if you want to be posh), over a jumper/cardigan, over a Uniqlo Heat tech long sleeved top (or the equivalent from M&S), jeans, socks, shoes/boots/slippers and a scarf. I find having socks and shoes and a scarf on make a big difference to how warm I feel.

Keep moving regularly (if you stay sitting for any length of time you get cold). Go outside regularly then it feels warmer when you come in.

I don't know how cold my house is during the day - it warms up very quickly if the sun is shining, like yesterday, but today when it is raining it is not so good.

ILoveAFullFridge · 05/11/2013 11:45

Viva Wink nearly responded TMI, but then your 2nd post appeared!

Unless I'm moving about a lot, it does get chilly, and even snugging under a blanket doesn't help. Tho if I stay in a sunny spot it's as good as having the heating on. Not very reliable though!

We've been down to 13 so far.

I wear normal clothes + fleeces/extra jumpers + hat/scarf/gloves (particularly when it gets below 10).

Am currently wearing a cat for warmth Grin but usually just have a sleeping bag to throw over myself.

KnickersOnOnesHead · 05/11/2013 11:48

Apparently it is 4degrees here Hmm

Considering going to bed for a jog to keep warm for an hour before school run!

MirandaWest · 05/11/2013 11:48

It's about 14 here at the moment. As I am marking exam papers I need to stay in one place Grin. I have a scarf on and put furry socks on top of my tights. May crank the thermostat up to 16 degrees in a daring manner.

bonzo77 · 05/11/2013 11:49

You have to move about. Going outside is good too, just to post a letter or even to put the rubbish out. Changing into slippers instead of outdoor shoes. Fingerless gloves and a scarf, a fleece on top of other clothes.

WhatABeautifulPussy · 05/11/2013 11:51

You could do housework? But that would remove the insulating layer of dust that's accumulated Grin

accessorizequeen · 05/11/2013 11:52

I only put it on if it gets to 10 or 11. You do need more clothes! I wear 2 tops, jumper, dressing gown or fleece plus wristwarmers and scarf, sheepskin slippers. My house doesn't get above 16 with heating on in jan. move around & wear more.

MindyWiller · 05/11/2013 11:54

My heating isn't on yet. house is cool but not uncomfortably so. good excuse to have the duvet on the couch one DS is in bed.

Thewhingingdefective · 05/11/2013 11:55

No heating on here and my house feels quite warm, but it is a small Cornish cottage with thick granite walls and tiny windows. The rooms are small and I have the washing machine and tumble dryer going so the kitchen feels very warm in there.

I have been fairly active this morning and have just sat down for a break so it may start to feel chilly. I'm wearing trousers, long sleeve thin cotton top and an old woolly cardigan. If I get cold sitting around I put on woolly hat and scarf and make a hot drink.

Heating when on timer comes on for two hours 6-8am in the morning and from 4-10pm, although I have it turned completely off at the moment and a I just put it on for an hour in the morning and couple of hours when the kids get home from school as it's not ever so cold yet.

ILoveAFullFridge · 05/11/2013 11:56

Oh yes, I'm wearing slippers. They make a huge difference. Yesterday I was wearing two woollen jumpers, was not sitting around, and my hands were still freezing. Rudolph-nosed, too.

I am wearing my pjs, a sleeping toddler and the cat. Toastie.

agendabender · 05/11/2013 11:57

When I'm working at my desk I have a woolen blanket for my legs/feet and a fleece dressing gown for the top half. Every hour I get up, do some housework to warm up, and probably make a hot drink. Actually not doing any of that at the moment because I'm not working much and chasing my three year old around keeps us both warm!

LoganMummy · 05/11/2013 12:01

Hot drinks - boil a full kettle then pop hot water in flask to keep it warm without having to reboil kettle.

Lots of layers, dressing gown, slippers etc.

Having to put the heating on more than I would like as DD is just five months.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 05/11/2013 12:01

Our heating isn't working at the moment so it isn't on at all. I put the fire on in the evenings and when I am at home alone I have a jumper or a top with a fleece over it. If I feel cold when I sit down I have a snuggie blanket Smile but the house hasn't felt really cold yet.

We are getting a new boiler soon (I hope) so then it will be nice and warm. It hasn't felt too cold so far though.

SparklyFucker · 05/11/2013 12:02

I have multiple sets of thermal long johns and thermal long sleeve tops that I wear under everything. Also wear a pair of ski socks over the top of ordinary socks, and layer your tucking in to avoid any gaps. I've also happily worn a fleece jacket over the top of a shirt & jumper when needs be. The thick dressing gown suggested above would work very well too.

Bubbles1066 · 05/11/2013 12:05

Thermal vest, top and jumper, tights, jeans, 3 pairs of socks and a wooly jumper. I also use the dehumidifier during the day (3p and hour) in various rooms during the day so we don't get damp. I only use heating in the morning and evenings during the week. I do have it on during the day at weekends though if we are home.

MinesAPintOfTea · 05/11/2013 12:05

Ugg-style slippers and cups of tea instead of cold water. And because I'm bfing I usually wear a vest. An extra thin layer helps a surprising amount.

Lvcat · 05/11/2013 12:06

Currently wearing pjs, fleecy blanket, slipper boots and high temp from kidney infection but still freezing.

Trying to lure a cat to sit in my feet but so far no joy Hmm

SerotoninCanEatTomorrow · 05/11/2013 12:11

Yesterday we were really cold and I fiddled with the thermostat - I felt really chilly in long sleeves/wooly cardi and jeans - but the thermostat was trying to tell me the house was 20 degrees. I think it's broken!

Today is better though, am a little cooler than I would like but I am only in a t shirt and joggers and the toddler is in a t shirt and pants (he just doesn't feel the cold!)

Procrastinating · 05/11/2013 12:11

I'm marking essays so sitting still all day. I have trousers, fleece socks under Joules slipper boot things. 2 long sleeve T-shirts, jumper, cardigan and I'm wearing a fleece dressing gown on top of that ensemble. A cup of tea every hour and I survive.
It is only when I have a shower or bath that I realise how cold I have actually been.

ILoveAFullFridge · 05/11/2013 12:31

It would appear that I am underdressed!

I just hate being constricted by layers and layers of clothing - especially when I get a hot flush and it all has to come off.
