If you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, support and Wine and Cake along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do someting more interesting instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings. Don't be put off by the barf-tastic language of the site - the underlying system is sound!

Humungous thanks to SlimChance for leading us through October and such a copy-and-pasteable OP.... Thanks

All welcome!!

Pretty quiet day here too.

DD wanted to go to the cinema so we went to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2. DH came but I could see he wasn't that enamoured (sp?) about the whole thing and afterwards he admitted he only came so I wouldn't complain he wasn't participating in family life!

I am annoyed that I wasted the rest of the day doing nothing productive (just internet surfing/Facebooking etc) whilst he drank a case of beer watching the rugby! He has this "thing" about being alone so even though I would have been in the house, he would still have been on his own. Stupid I know and I really shouldn't pander to it especially as I really should be getting on with some sewing!

He cooked so I de-spotwelded the pots afterwards and shined sink and the only other flying I have done was to put in a load of washing.

Tomorrow DD and I are dragging him to High Wycombe as Mary Berry is at John Lewis for a book signing and we are big fans

Engels - Good Luck with your run

feetheart · 17/11/2013 08:05

Good luck with the run Engels - just take it easy, especially at the start, and enjoy it.

Strange w/e here as DH and DS are at Beavers camp so DD and I have a girlie w/e. That meant charity shop shopping yesterday afternoon followed by curry, Strictly and Atlantis. Hobbycraft is on the cards for today :)

Need a small list for today:

  • Chicken out of freezer for dinner
  • Croissants and nice juice for breakfast (DH's low fat diet means no croissants/pain au chocolat :( so when the cat is away... :))
  • Tidy up curry remnants from last night Blush
  • Hobbycraft - try not to spend a fortune
  • Welcome back tired boys
  • Barbeque chicken do-it-yourself wraps - all ingredients on table so you make your own and no-one complains
  • Sunday night routine
  • Ironing

Off to look for inspiration for knitting.
Have a good Sunday everyone.

Slimchance · 17/11/2013 08:43

Ooooohh good morning! Sorry to be late posting links!! Off riding with a friend of dd's in a minute and it's like herding cats ... .

Hope you are all ok and good luck today with the 15k today Engels! Hope you enjoy it!

Waves to Blue¨- glad campaign is going well!

Will be back later tonight to catch up properly ...

Baby-step no. 17, for today, Sun 17 Nov, is an important one I never manage to do about sticking to a set bed-time!

No zones or missions because it is the weekend.

Sunday is the day to renew your spirit ie do something that makes you feel happy/fulfilled/calm.

November's habit of the month is menu planning.

Today's flight plan is here!

Enjoy your Sunday everyone!

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 09:20

Bitchy I've decided I can let my jealousy over your crocheting ability eat me up, or I can give myself a kick in the bum and do something I CAN do instead. So I'm going to knit a blanket for each of the boys' beds. I may make one for DGS as well for Christmas (if I get moving now I can get his done first). I am going to source wool (I already have a fairly good supply) and look at different knitting patterns. Then I'm going to plan out how many squares and sizes, and make squares of knitting with coordinating colours and patterns and then stitch all the squares together for a lovely blanket. I have loads of time in the evening to knit while watching television or just relaxing, so this is ideal. Smile

I'm feeling slightly better today, but only because I'm taking co-codamol. It's the only way to get any sleep as otherwise the jaw pain keeps me awake. I'll give it a few days and see if the nerve settles down, and if it doesn't I'll then have to ring the dentist back and ask if he can check and make sure there isn't something going on there.

I made a lovely treacle bake yesterday and the chocolate cookies that someone (oh heavens I've forgotten who, but thank you!!) posted on here the other day. Both were huge hits with everyone.

ta da
morning routine (no school runs - thank god for Sunday!!)
washing up

to do
go over meal plan for the next week
one load of laundry
vacuum living room
tidy up living room
put away clothing from yesterdays laundry
tidy up dining room
plan my knitted blanket Smile
start knitting tonight

I'm sure there's more, but I'm being lazy at the moment and don't want to look about the house to see what needs to be done. Grin

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 18:14

dear lord, I've killed the thread. how is that possible?

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 18:46

BogStandard better now that I'm taking co-codamol. Grin Tolerable, anyway. Can you drink wine while taking co-codamol? Hmm I am debating....

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 18:46

and moving is always sad and exciting at the same time, isn't it?

ToffeeWhirl · 17/11/2013 19:02

Grin at you killing the thread, Alice. Glad to hear you have found painkillers to help with the tooth ache. I hope the NHS get is sorted sooner rather than later.

Bog - your Saturday night out sounds fun Smile. Are you moving far from your current home?

feet - hope you had a good day with your DD today. Sounds lovely.

dizzy - it sounds like you needed a day to relax, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Engels - hope the 15K went well.

SC - It think it was Anne Tyler (one of my favourite authors) who described trying to organise children as 'like herding water' Grin.

It has been a very busy, sociable, but lovely weekend. I have done an endless amount of tidying, cooking, washing up and wrapping of presents. Today was DS2's 8th birthday. We had his aunt and a friend over this morning and then his Grandma (my MIL) came over for lunch and to stay for the rest of the day. And he also had two friends round for the afternoon, which meant a lot of laughter, shrieking and running around. (Very good for Grandma to be part of this - it really cheers her up).

Everyone finally left at about 6.30 and we are now enjoying the peace and quiet. DH has lit the log burner and opened a bottle of wine. DS2 is busy making one of his new Lego sets. Lego is simply the best toy.

I have hidden the latest piles of ironing in our bedroom to deal with at a later date...

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 19:05

ah... hidden ironing... you see, this is why I love everyone on this thread... people after my own heart Grin

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 19:06

I distinctly remember DH asking me a couple years ago (in front of MIL of course) "Do we even HAVE an iron?" Hmm

ToffeeWhirl · 17/11/2013 19:15

Yep, I think we all have hidden ironing piles/clutter in cupboards on this thread, Alice (with apologies to those who have actually managed to declutter. I suspect WhoKnows is ahead of us on this).

Actually, ironing doesn't feature on Flylady's routines because she doesn't think it's necessary! However, not ironing school shirts and certain other items makes me feel a bit slovenly. I do as little as possible though. There are so many more interesting things to do.

GoingGoingGoth · 17/11/2013 19:43

My name's Goth and I'm an ironer! I didn't used to bother, but now I just can't help myself. I am turning into my mother.

Alice so pleased the painkillers are working, not sure about the alcohol, it should say on the packet if it's a definate problem.

Bog hope the move goes well! We moved 300 miles last year, big changes, but we love it. Don't know if I could be brave as some of our fledglings and move abroad (my parents would kill me Grin)

Engels hope the 15k went well! You are amazing. Will be getting my pom-poms out to cheer you next week Angry

Another good day here, managed to go out on our bikes as a family for the first time ever! Would just be perfect if DD didn't grumble all the time She loves being on her bike, has been asking to go out all week, but once she's on it she never stops complaining about dogs, hills, people, more dogs, going too fast or too slow. And breathe.

Pottered about a bit this afternoon, and then had a relaxing hour in the bath, bliss. Will be cracking open the Wine once I've got DD into bed (18 minutes and counting)

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 19:55

lol Goth I have a friend who loves to iron. I think if I asked her to do mine, she'd quite happily do it, but then I'd feel completely slovenly. Blush

BitchytheGreat · 17/11/2013 20:38

I quite like ironing. But it is one of those jobs that if you let it build up into a mountain or just have a whole load that is only ironing it can get boring. However, I multitask, eg stick tv on and iron whilst watching a film. Or put cake in oven and iron whilst it is cooking (also works for making tea etc) But it wouldn't work for people who are trying to mix small kids and irons. Ds occasionally decides he wants to learn so gets given a tea towl and the iron and the novalty soon passes HmmGrin.

I made an excuetive decision on the blanket 6x8 squares is plenty will result in a blanket about 130x170 ish so that helps as it reduces the no of squares needed by a bomb. Removes the need for buying more wool with exception to edging colour. And makes the dam thing more likely to be completed on time. I am terrible, absolutely terrible aboun the no of on the go projects I have at one time. Blush this should go on the top of my decluttering list (and does but i am crap at not starting new projects regardless) Blush

Not much flying done, not done the paperwork. Going to have to hit the ground running, flying and jumping tomo as a result. Ah well.

Slimchance · 17/11/2013 21:19

Good evening my lovelies!

Brass monkey weather here but went for a dank and misty bracing ride in the woods this morning which certainly blew the cobwebs away and revealed the fact that I have the fitness level of an ailing slug.

Large tangled pile of mud-steeped jodphurs, boots and back protectors mouldering in hall to tackle for my sins.

And dh has been making oxtail soup this evening in three stages involving virtually every saucepan in the house and lots of muslin squares - smells divine though!

As far as Flying is concerned, have done a bit of laundry, a bit of prep for tomorrow (laying out of uniform, letter writing, filling out forms etc) and a bit more rubbish/recycling organisation. Oh and a bit of pampering for dd and myself in terms of pedicures/manicures and general scrub and brush up.

Also finally, finally, managed to have formal meeting with dh for 40 mins while dd was in the bath to discuss Christmas arrangements for office and presents for staff etc so can thankfully get on with that now at long last.

And, as we were out over lunch time, treated ourselves to a delicious Chinese takeaway for supper of pancakes, crispy duck, shredded cucumber and spring onions with plum sauce - yum- while watching Strictly.

How have you all been getting on?

[SC (a notorious sloven) studiously ignores any ironing speak Wink]

Having vanquished C.H.A.O.S. (yay!) Goth has received a glowing Flying commendation from her estate agent (congratulations!!!) and has been getting on her bike with family in tow.

Bogstandard has been preparing for a huge, radical life change (good luck with it!) by enjoying a glass or two of Wine and her last free weekend in Hertfordshire.

Alice has been imbibing pain killers and Wine! Grin [Which must explain the ironing guilt I reckon Wink]

Toffee has been celebrating her ds2's 8th birthday and playing host to a scrummage of relatives and friends. [Yay! Many happy returns to your ds!]

In the absence of her dh and ds, Feetheart has been enjoying a girly w/e with her dd (with a few forbidden croissants on the side).

Oooh and Dizzy has been hobknobbing [geddit?] with Mary Berry!! Envy Envy Envy.

Swan has been making delicious dishes for her freezer and wishing her family meals were more akin to those of the Waltons ... Grin [Our dh-instigated family meals are the reason my girth is twice as large as it should be btw, so not so ideal really! Smile].

Angrybuddha eyeballed a skinny, badly dressed Father Christmas and hid in a maze Grin.

Engels has been (very impressively) running a 15k on very little sleep! Hope it went well!!

[Btw - St Nic arrives early in your neck of the woods doesn't he? Steamboat hasn't pulled up at Antwerp docks as yet.]

Blue has been up to her eyes in important campaign work.

Rowingboat has been retiring to bed with a goldfinch...and has been happy to discover that she is doing more Flying than she realised! [Cleaner is lovely Polish lady with beautiful hair btw - I'm the one in the floral pinny.]

Bitchy has been doing clever things involving crochet.

[In fact all this talk of crochet is making me itch to do something creative for Christmas like buy some lovely fabric and trimmings and then put it in a cardboard box until next year.]

Whoknows and her family had their picture taken!

Big waves to Nicknacks Picturesinthefirelight Jess PA Imadoozer Ellie Just Honu Lauren Trazzles Castle Mercury Saturn Stillwearingoddsocks Rummikub Owlface Petmyunicorn Witco Splatpancake and anyone else I've missed!

Baby-step no 18, for Mon 18th November is [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/flyladys-11-commandments/ read Flylady's 11 commandments] but of course we ignore number 4 and vomit at the thought of number 10.

This coming week we are in Zone 4: Zone 4: The Master Bedroom (Nov 17 – 23). Declutter in this zone for 15 mins every day! More details here.

Once Zone 4 is clear of clutter, you can go on to detailed cleaning.

The mission for Monday (and all the missions for the wk ahead) can be found here. It involves spending 15 mins getting rid of anything that doesn't belong in your boudoir.

Monday is the day for our home bleugh here.

The habit for November is menu planning.

And the flight plan which provides a summary of the above, will update itself daily.

Have a productive start to the week everyone!

G'night!

AliceinWinterWonderland · 17/11/2013 21:45

Very nicely summarised Slimchance Grin

I'm sitting here watching I'm a Celeb and putting together my list for tomorrow. I'll even mention that ironing... is not on the list. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/11/2013 22:36

Evening all,

Well Toffee - I do still have hidden stashes of clutter, although not as bad as they used to be. I am on top of the ironing though, I have always quite liked ironing so long as I can watch telly at the same time. This was a problem when we only had one downstairs as our living room is so tiny no one else would have been able to see the telly, also nowhere nearby to keep iron and board and therefore not easy to just do a few things quickly. We got a telly upstairs last year and I can watch stuff on Iplayer on it now in our bedroom, I have also found an easily accessible corner to stash the board in and bob's your uncle, ironing is now much easier to fit into the day.

A mixed day today, DD took part in a world record breaking attempt for the most people doing a tapdance routine simultaneously for CIN (no idea if any records were actually broken) at lunchtime. I was tired this afternoon and everyone was a bit irritable, but we took the DCs out on their bikes for a bit to blow away the cobwebs, then I took DD to her swimming lesson and we have had a nice evening watching telly. Off to do my ironing now!

Well I have now met royalty! The Queen of Cakes talked to me - well mostly to DD really - but I am basking in the glow! DD now has a signed book (and I got one for my Mum for Xmas too).

We had lunch in this nice little American burger joint, so it was just last night's leftovers warmed up for tea!

Flying has consisted of:

  • Buying new trainers!
  • Checking that there is uniform/shirts for the morning
  • Supervised homework and reading
  • Paid for next week's school dinners
  • All bags/shoes/wellies etc ready for school
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/11/2013 07:26

Yay Dizzy, you lucky thing! I used to live in HW and drive past MB's house on the way to work. The John Lewis is one of the few things I miss about living there.

PositiveAttitude · 18/11/2013 07:56

Hello, I am so out of the habit now of checking in on here that I am forgetting to even look! Oooops, sorry, folks. Blush

Just a flying post as I am off to work in a minute. Plan for today is:

work
clear out and organise my baking cupboard which has got into a real mess!
Do some mum and son special time - plan on cooking duck a'la orange!! I am so loving having him do this classic chef course. He is enjoying every minute of it and its boosting his confidence that he is doing very well, too. Downside is that food bill has increased as has my waistline
I must also do a meal plan and food shop list........might even do a food shop, but I doubt if I will get round to that today.

Must dash. Will drop by later....... waves to everyone. Smile
