what's the deal with all these airfresheners?

dh and I are becoming more and more perplexed at these airfreshener ads. there are endless ads for electronic ones which blast themselves at you throughout the day, one which happily boasts that due to it's megablasting power, 'you'll always be aware of the fragrance'

to us that sounds like a threat. it sounds like assault in your own home, being blasted by artificial fragrance all the time and never being able to ignore it.

I can understand maybe for smokers and dog owners but surely people's homes don't need this kind of full-on fumigation?

does anyone buy them?

Do all of you who detest air fresheners not use perfume/deodorant yourselves then?

IHeartEnid · 28/06/2006 14:07

yes

but not to cover up bo

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 14:08

think we should be able to get ones like they use in museums...glastonbury, teenage boy, the world cup...just snap open a phial and you're there

piglit · 28/06/2006 14:08

I hate it when someone wearing perfume gives my dses a cuddle and they then stink of it for the rest of the day. Bleugh.

hunkermunker · 28/06/2006 14:15

I don't breathe in deodorant all day. And I often use a crystal stick anyway.

southeastastra · 28/06/2006 14:17

i don't use deodorants and rarely use perfume, it gives me a headache i don't know why

nutcracker · 28/06/2006 14:19

Hate air freshners but burning essential oils has given me a headache in the past and put me off.

hunkermunker · 28/06/2006 14:20

And I REALLY loathe incense. In fact, it incenses me.

(I should be working)

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 14:21

i use tom's of main long-lasting roll on.

i don't hold a scent very well at all. for dressier occasions, i spritz on some chanel no. 5. even then, it fades quickly.

other than that, i mix essential oils - my fav just now is patchouli, geranium and bergamot - and mix w/a little jojoba oil (it never goes rancid b/c it's actually a wax) and use that as 'perfume'.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 14:21

I don't use deodorant or aperspirant either or clothes softener they are barfy
ds brought some of those plug in air fresheners back from school and they are rank..ambi pure or something

I like frankinscense

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 14:23

i've got some amazing frankincense, zippi, that you burn over a hot coal.

can't use it these days b/c dd2 is so young and it's pretty potent, but it's LOVELY.

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 14:25

where from expat?

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 14:27

from here:

spaceclearing

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 14:29

clothes softener is barfy, especially after you find out what the hell is in it and it's basically coating your clothes. eeww. and all those wacky fake smells - ylang yland and riceflower, wtf?! wretched.

LotosEater · 28/06/2006 14:31

I hate air fresheners - dh bought one for the hall after one of ds1's friends did a spectacular vomit all over the carpet.

next thing, the cat started spraying in the hall - took the air freshener away and he stopped

mawbroon · 28/06/2006 15:29

Another vote for just opening the window if there's a stink in the house.

I stopped wearing deodorant/perfume when I went into hospital to have ds. It didn't seem fair that he should have his first breastfeeds whilst having to smell my antipong in my pits. I haven't bothered since.

Cappucino · 28/06/2006 15:47

grief - i thought one or two people would post but it looks like I've hit a nerve!

glad that people are anti-fabric conditioner too; I always thought it made clothes feel slimy so I never use it, but there was some controversy on here a few weeks back about bad mothers giving their children crispy pyjamas to wear and really felt I was in a minority

also scented ironing water

they must be laughing their arses off that people are actually buying it

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 15:48

crisp, clean pj's. as opposed to ones coated in petro crap smelling like fake ylang ylang?

i know which one's i'd chose!

zippitippitoes · 28/06/2006 15:51

thanks for the link expat..pointless space clearing in my house but I may get the frankincense!

When i had a shop I used to hate people coming in who smelt of 5 or 6 clashing overpowering scents

themoon66 · 28/06/2006 15:51

I don't use fabric conditioner at all and I've never noticed anything being overtly crispy. I think fabric conditioners just coat all the fibres in silicone or something... bit like hair conditioners (don't use those either)

acnebride · 28/06/2006 16:00

i used to like wearing perfume then one day when i was feeling rough i sat next to a man on the tube with overpowering aftershave. since that day 5 years ago i've worn it about 6 times

moondog · 28/06/2006 18:00

If the loo is whiffy, light a match.
Clears those fumes in a second.
