what's the deal with all these airfresheners?

dh and I are becoming more and more perplexed at these airfreshener ads. there are endless ads for electronic ones which blast themselves at you throughout the day, one which happily boasts that due to it's megablasting power, 'you'll always be aware of the fragrance'

to us that sounds like a threat. it sounds like assault in your own home, being blasted by artificial fragrance all the time and never being able to ignore it.

I can understand maybe for smokers and dog owners but surely people's homes don't need this kind of full-on fumigation?

does anyone buy them?

acnebride,I sooooo know what you mean!!

Expat,am loving clary sage in dd's Narnia style wardrobe at the moment.

Let's not even start on 'intimate' wipes and sprays!!

I did once start a thread on 'douching'

Jeeeeeezuz!

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:16

'ps I don't do fabric softener either. more stinky smells intruding on life. '

Exactly, Peahead! Some of those new ones out now turn my stomach. Yeah, I really want my clothes to smell like fake cocoa. Eeeww.

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:17

I use chamomile in the girls' cupboard, moon.

Only DD1 found it and came out w/old breast pad in hand, sniffing and repeating, 'Mmm. Smells nice.'

I put it on a high shelf now.

bundle · 28/06/2006 11:17

yuk

EmmyLou · 28/06/2006 11:18

Never bought an air feshener in my life. Hate strong smelling fabric conditioners too. Total waste of money promoted by companies who cannot think of more valid ways to get hold of our cash. Bleurgh. Hate overly scented liquid soap too.

And they do aggravate asthma.

We have a dog and he can be v smelly but I open windows (and hope they're not muck spreading)

moondog · 28/06/2006 11:19

lol
My fluff mad ds finds all the bits of oil soaked cottonwool I stash away too!

moondog · 28/06/2006 11:19

I'd rather inhale eau de dog than eau de factory.

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:19

the most offensive are those things that hide in the bog roll holder.

oh gross!

went to a friend's place and got a blast of fake, smelly 'freshner' when i went to get some loo roll.

barf!

booge · 28/06/2006 11:20

open a window for F**s sake is what I feel like screaming and magic trees...don't get me started, one sure route to being car sick.

EmmyLou · 28/06/2006 11:21

Like the breast pad idea - will dig mine out. Bought some lentil weavery ones once that looked like they'd been knitted by yak's peasants in Outer Uzbekistan or something - they were too much for me so became bedside coasters for a while (not that I had ever used coasters before either, but hey, this was recycling).

moondog · 28/06/2006 11:22

In the bogroll???

Too too weird??

Magic trees, wtf is that all about.
Used surely only by secret sect of overweight chain smoking min cab drivers to indicate allegience to summat or t'other???

moondog · 28/06/2006 11:22

lol EL

EmmyLou · 28/06/2006 11:26

Magic trees just remind me of cab drivers and coming home in my youth pissed - maybe I didn't really feel sick from too much alcohol...just the bloody tree thingys.

And scented bog roll holder? WTF!

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:26

yeah, moon, they've got these bog roll holders that are full of air freshner. they call it 'spin fresh' or something, so everytime you spin the bog roll holder to get bog roll, you get a blast of fumes. nice!

as if the smelly bog roll paper they were using weren't enough. they had one of those on the wall 'bust of fumes' thingies, too.

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:27

the whole bathroom was enough to make most people break out in allergic rash.

Kelly1978 · 28/06/2006 11:32

lol, can't believe so many people hate air fresheners!
We have them in the loos, but wouldn't use them anywhere else. Our house mostly smells of incense. In Dp's aunt's house it is really strong and the boys and their clothes/blankets coem back reeking of incense. Prefer it to air freshener though.

JackieNo · 28/06/2006 11:39

Here's the evidence that air fresheners are bad for you (although the story is about aerosol ones - the chemicals must be in the stick on ones etc too). I hate the smell of them. Oh yes, and they're dangerous too!

southeastastra · 28/06/2006 11:49

they always give me a headache

expatinscotland · 28/06/2006 11:50

there's nothing 'fresh' about them.

Ledodgyherring · 28/06/2006 12:06

I don't buy air freshners at all I just feel like i'm breathing in loads of chemicals. Urgh.

GeorginaA · 28/06/2006 12:27

In addition, you should never EVER have air fresheners in the same room as a fish tank - the chemicals enter the water and kill the fish

stitch · 28/06/2006 12:52

i prefer to open a window.

especially in the toilet.

and if you want the house to smell nice, bake a cake, or some bread.

themoon66 · 28/06/2006 13:36

another nice way to get rid of kitchen smells is a few slices of fresh apple and a sprinkle of cinnamon - microwave for 1 min. Smells like mummy has been baking apple pie yum.

"Did you see that puff?"

No, I was too busy working out how to twang this elastic band at the back of your head, you irritating child.
