Flying into September - a new term for the Fledglings

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/08/2013 22:14

Welcome to the September Fledgling Flylady Thread.

This thread is for people with CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome). We follow Flylady, the website with a mission!

All are welcome on this thread, experienced flyers and newcomers alike.

We try to follow the commandments of Flylady as we run our homes, loosely anyway. In between there's lots of chat and support as we go through our daily lives. We have coffee, cake, and a naughty corner for those who want to chat but CBA with their house some days. However you follow it, this thread is designed to make your life a little easier and more fun.

For those who are new to the system (and those needing a refresher), there are several aspects to the system:

  1. Babysteps. These build a routine. Some are really useful, some are downright odd and some are, quite frankly, there to be ignored. They build a good foundation though.
  1. Decluttering. Flylade is evangelical about clutter. In order to feel good about our homes we need to ditch the clutter. Flylady divides the home into zones, week by week and repeating monthly. As well as babysteps, we have to declutter in the relevant zone. Once that is achieved we move on to...
  1. Missions. Also in the current zone, these are targetted tasks to tackle one particular aspect. One a day, they vary month to month.
  1. Deep Cleaning. Once we have completely decluttered (some of us seem to be stuck permanently on that stage) there are deep cleaning lists for each zone. Achieve that and your house will be spotless!

One last thing - the Flylady website encourages us to subscribe to her emails - one word - DON"T! You will be overwhelmed by them. Instead come to this thread every morning and the relevant links for the day will be there waiting for you except when the thread leader has been on the Wine

A big thank you to Bitchy for last month, and also for doing this Sunday's links as I am off camping.

Tuesday:

Babystep Set a bedtime and stick to it. I'm no good at this TBH.

Mission - scrub your bathroom trash can (I'm planning to buy a new one tomorrow, our was a cheap metal one that's gone all rusty, so that's me off the hook). Also do a 27 fling boogie in a DC's bedroom (did that yesterday).

All of which makes things sound in control Chez Whoknows. Which they're not. However I will be out with my binbag again in the morning.

Wow feetheart so impressed Smile

Ta da

To do
Set a bed time and stick to it!

oopsiforgot · 16/09/2013 23:27

Lurker alert!! Hi! Haven't lurked in ages and did initially sign up to the flylady emails (i know, i know its torturous!) which I occasionally dip into, anyway just wondered if anyone had ever bought any of her products? I am toying with buying the cloths and 'rubber scrubber'

GoingGoingGoth · 16/09/2013 23:31

Right I'm back what do you mean, you hadn't noticed
So 4 days off, I CAN get loads done this week.

I've managed to clear the kitchen sides this evening, so I've got a clear start in there. Tomorrow's plan is to do weekly bleugh, start on missions, DM's birthday present and have a quick catch up on the thread.

Hope you're all ok, and after seeing the Babystep and heading off to bed like a good girl (ha!)

ToffeeWhirl · 17/09/2013 08:33

Looks as if you are off to a Flying start, Goth Smile.

oops - welcome. No, I have never bought any of Flylady's products. There are better and cheaper products available, in my opinion. I use e-cloths, available at any supermarket or online, for wiping down surfaces, sinks, etc. And a dustpan and brush does the job of the rubber scrubber.

pushme - Grin at your smug 'though ours had an egg in it'.

Back in a mo.

BlueEyeshadow · 17/09/2013 09:03

oops I haven't looked at them myself but I understand that the cloths are just microfibre ones that you can get from Poundland or similar and that Lakeland sell something like the rubber scrubber.

Need to remember to go to DS1's school harvest festival today which will be cold!

ToffeeWhirl · 17/09/2013 09:04

DS2 still not well. Think he might have a chest infection, so I'm whisking him off to the drs this morning. DS1 still sleeping.

If I only do one thing today, I need to tackle the out-of-control hotspot in my kitchen Blush.

BlueEyeshadow · 17/09/2013 09:04

Ah, massive x-post with Toffee

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/09/2013 09:07

Oops - welcome to the thread. I've never bought any of her stuff either, as Toffee says a lot of similar stuff is available in supermarkets and failing that Lakeland Ltd have a brilliant range of cleaning stuff.

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 17/09/2013 11:35

Just back from dr. As suspected, DS2 has a chest infection and dr said not to send him back to school until at least Friday. You should have seen the Cheshire cat grin on DS2's face Grin.

Just remembered that friend is popping round this afternoon, so now have to do a crisis clean.

BitchytheGreat · 17/09/2013 14:37

Our hanging basket disappeared in the storm last night or the night before. It won't be missed and no one has complained about where it has eneded up so not worrying. Having a frustrating not really getting anything done day but not seeming to be able to stop long enough to grab lunch HmmConfused Might be back later.

Tbf whoknows i have been better about bedtimes again since the weekend.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/09/2013 16:42

Had no idea my pansies would cause such a stir Smile. Sorry you lost your hanging basket, Bitchy.

I have done absolutely nothing from my above list. DFriend arrived early and left an hour ago. Had a lovely time catching up. Have spent the last hour fetching and carrying water/ice cream/snacks for two poorly boys. I feel guilty about not feeding them proper meals today, but they are both off their food.

I, on the other hand, am absolutely starving and about to reheat yesterday's leftovers for myself.

Think I will shift today's list over to tomorrow.

Engelsemama · 17/09/2013 20:09

I have literally just walked in my house for the first time since leaving at 8am this morningShock.

Ta da:-
Full teaching day
Meeting after school

Fly up to local secondary school to meet DS for Open Evening

To do:-
Go to bed.

No time for personals...so just big waves to everyone for now. House is chaotic to say the least and I have a similar scenario tomorrow without the family party at the end. This week is my naughty corner week.

elliepac · 17/09/2013 22:30

pmpy well my beans had cheese on topWinkGrin.

Swanhilda · 17/09/2013 22:33

Whoknows If it was me, and I'm hardline, I would just tell DH to go by himself for the birthday, and then all go later in three days. That's what my Dh has said to me on occasion. And in fact he put his foot down over us spending Christmas in Ireland quite a few years ago, as he found it so uncongenial and tiresome. I think people do just have to fit around your plans for once. It is only one year after all. And your family memories are just as important as everyone else's. Or... even more daring...get MIL to change her birthday party to a later date. Maybe everyone finds it exhausting so soon after Christmas, even MIL.

Ds2 has managed to get himself to and from school unassisted, although I did walk him to and from the tube today. He is doing well, confidence wise, and seems to enjoy Secondary for the "scene" but his school work makes me want to cry as his writing is just appalling and I just hope the teachers don't write things like Messy work or even worse, Redo this. He has very little patience for it at the end of a long day coping. He also had a detention today for giving a cheeky answer to the Maths teacher, which I think wasn't really cheeky just him being very "literal", but luckily he took the detention which was about ten minutes in his stride.

Otherwise, I have spent today cleaning out my room, washing nearly 8 loads of washing, re-sorting the small loft, winter clothes out, summer in, fish pie, homework and dd-TLC/ds1 TLC.

also dones
three lots of music practice
recyling pile
food compost
put some clothes away
s & s loos x 2
hoovered my bedroom
changed sheets

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/09/2013 23:42

Swan - you are probably right, I suspect the the other SILs don't greatly enjoy the Boxing Day ritual either, but they both live locally so it isn't such a problem for them. The ILs house really is too small for all of us (9 adults, 2 teens, 3 children, think Coronation Street house) to be cooped up in all day in the middle of winter and one of the SILs has been hosting an evening get together at her (much bigger) house for the last few years but I know she is tired of that too. It is generally the only time we all get together, but would be so much nicer in summer. I might suggest we go up for the weekend in between Christmas and New Year instead.

Hectic afternoon here today, Tuesdays are a bit of a feat of timing with DD having ballet and then DS having Cubs plus dinner in between. DD has taken to wanting to cycle everywhere, but I am finding it a huge palaver compared to walking (nowhere we go is more than half a mile, so by the time I've got bikes out from the back garden (2 locked gates), found locks, keys, helmets then all in reverse when we get home it takes longer than walking). I am also nervous about her cycling she is still quite wobbly. So, we cycled to ballet at the sports centre in the rain (DS scootered), en route I realised both my tires were getting flat, so I sent DS to the cafe and took DD to get changed, pumped up tires, found DS with my friends in the cafe, quick chat then back out to cycle home in the rain. Quick dinner, then out to take DS and his 3 friends to Cubs (walking). It started pouring again just as we got there, we lingered for 10 mins but had to just walk back in the end.

Anyway, Flying-wise - not so much decluttering today, but I have sorted about 8 loads of backed up clean washing, including 2 lots done today, plus quite a bit of tidying and hoovering, not bad for a work day.

Wednesday:

Babystep is to read Flylady's 11 Commandments.

Mission Clear out medicine cabinet and DC sock drawers. I did the first not long ago, but the 2nd definitely needs doing for DD.

WEdnesday is Anti-procrastination day

And here are a few reminders Reminders. 15 minutes of loving movement anyone?

OP posts:
ToffeeWhirl · 17/09/2013 23:56

DH did the medicine cabinet a few weeks ago and I did the DC's sock drawers recently too, so have inadvertantly done both missions Shock.

WhoKnows - Swan's idea about Christmas is very good. Hope you get it sorted somehow.

DS2 perked up enough to make homemade pizza with me tonight and did eat some of the toppings during the making, but couldn't eat the actual cooked pizza. He really has no appetite at all at the moment.

I feel a bit like we are back in the school holidays again. It's quite nice actually, as we don't have to rush around at all. I really enjoyed just sitting and reading with DS2 today and, later, playing a board game with him.

Have been failing miserably at the 'bed at decent hour' step, so need to go to bed now. Night all.
