Flying into September - a new term for the Fledglings

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/08/2013 22:14

Welcome to the September Fledgling Flylady Thread.

This thread is for people with CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome). We follow Flylady, the website with a mission!

All are welcome on this thread, experienced flyers and newcomers alike.

We try to follow the commandments of Flylady as we run our homes, loosely anyway. In between there's lots of chat and support as we go through our daily lives. We have coffee, cake, and a naughty corner for those who want to chat but CBA with their house some days. However you follow it, this thread is designed to make your life a little easier and more fun.

For those who are new to the system (and those needing a refresher), there are several aspects to the system:

  1. Babysteps. These build a routine. Some are really useful, some are downright odd and some are, quite frankly, there to be ignored. They build a good foundation though.
  1. Decluttering. Flylade is evangelical about clutter. In order to feel good about our homes we need to ditch the clutter. Flylady divides the home into zones, week by week and repeating monthly. As well as babysteps, we have to declutter in the relevant zone. Once that is achieved we move on to...
  1. Missions. Also in the current zone, these are targetted tasks to tackle one particular aspect. One a day, they vary month to month.
  1. Deep Cleaning. Once we have completely decluttered (some of us seem to be stuck permanently on that stage) there are deep cleaning lists for each zone. Achieve that and your house will be spotless!

One last thing - the Flylady website encourages us to subscribe to her emails - one word - DON"T! You will be overwhelmed by them. Instead come to this thread every morning and the relevant links for the day will be there waiting for you except when the thread leader has been on the Wine

A big thank you to Bitchy for last month, and also for doing this Sunday's links as I am off camping.

3 loads of washing washed
1 load dried, next load is in the tumble dryer

I probably am doing too much, I feel like I am running around like a headless chicken. It always takes a little while to get back into the new term though, and work is pretty stressful at the moment. Plus the school have a big event on which is taking up my weekend. It should get a bit quieter after this, plus at the end of the month I finish my stint on the PTA - and I really am finishing this year, I will not be guilt tripped to stay on.

Nice news today - DS2 has been asked to join the invitation only County Wind Band. Trouble is I'm not sure how we are going to physically get him to the weekly rehearsals Confused

BitchytheGreat · 14/09/2013 02:56

Can't sleep. Too much on my mind. which is a pain as ds is clearly feeling better and is likely to be highly energetic and bouncy.

elliepac · 14/09/2013 08:19

Morning all. Busy couple of days here and another one planned today.

To do:-
Washing
Drying
Putting away
Food shop
Clean whole house (more of a home bleugh really)

Am having DNephew to stay over tonight. It will be the first time dsis has let him out of her sight for so long and he has just started crawling so am going to have to make sure living room at least is babyproofed.

sc good to see you back and glad that DH's operation went wellSmile.

nicknacks if you are reading this, get well soonThanksThanks.

swan that's very sad news. Puts everything in your own life in perspective doesn't itHmm.

Big waves to everyone else. Back later.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/09/2013 08:27

Today's babystep is Using a calendar properly

We took the brave step of going electronic this year, so it is all synced over phones, computers, was just looking at the blank paper one on the wall yesterday and thinking about getting rid. We 've had a few computer glitches though. Confused

OP posts:
PositiveAttitude · 14/09/2013 08:35

Glad you are now home NickNacks Now take it easy and no flying for a week to make sure you recover fully.

Sad to read all the bad things going on with you all. Thoughts are with you.

Pleased the op went well SC and things are going in the right direction for you.
And in solidarity for great sisters I am desperate for my eldest sister to return from a wonderful 3 week holiday so that I have someone to grumble about my parents to! and to tell her to go and be moaned at for a few days while I stick my head in the sand!! We mostly share the care of the elderly, ill parents and my dad is becoming more of a cantankerous old bugger than I ever thought possible! (I always said he would be the worst, but he is even worst than the worst at the moment!)

I had planned on going and doing a large shop today to fill the freezer, but I have just had a good sort out in there - fingers are frozen!! and I seem to have enough food for another 5 days, so might leave that til Monday or even Tuesday. YAY!!! So just a small shop now planned for today. Smile
Dump area still not been touched......might start today.

With the carpet in the bedroom question... they are not fitted wardrobes, just massive ones and I want the carpet to go under them so that we have the option of moving furniture around if we ever want to. Will the carpet fitters move everything for me? Normally DH would sort out all these things, but I don't really want to tell him what I have planned.

Right, have a good weekend everyone.

ToffeeWhirl · 14/09/2013 09:19

Morning all. Dh got up with DS2 this morning and let me sleep in - woohoo! Am now lying in bed with a cup of tea and MN Smile.

NickNacks - glad you're home again. Just make sure you take those abs and rest, rest, rest. Do you have help with the DC?

Jemima - that's fantastic news about your DS2 being invited to join the wind band. You must be really chuffed.

Swan - sorry you are feeling so exhausted.

Bitchy - hope you managed to get back to sleep ok.

Just - sorry you are still on life's roller coaster. You always sound amazingly determined and positive in spite of difficult circumstances. Any luck with getting the powers that be to see sense over your DS's earnings and saving for college yet?

ellie - how did it go with DN?

Have now been joined in bed by DS2, so not quite so peaceful anymore Hmm.

Managed a house bleugh yesterday, put all the washing away, made up bed for DFriend and had a lamb casserole in the oven by the time DFriend turned up. Spent the evening eating, drinking wine and catching up Smile. Hoping to go out somewhere today, so a No Flying day.

Go out for lunch :)

After that we'll see.

Hope you can take things easy, those who need to.

ToffeeWhirl · 14/09/2013 09:37

Spent so long doing that post that I missed WhoKnows and PA.

WhoKnows - I couldn't do without my paper calendar, but it depends what works for you. DH never checks our calendar and would probably prefer an electronic one, but relies on me to tell him what's happening next. (Actually, I must order my new calendar as I am getting to the stage of scribbling dates for next year on the last page of my current calendar.)

PA - sorry you are struggling with difficult elderly parents. Sounds like you definitely need a break. It is very hard work. Your caring duties never end, do they?

Re: the carpets - useful thread here about whether carpet fitters will remove furniture or not. Bottom line seems to be that it's safest to move it yourself first, as they are carpet fitters, not removal men. Could you and DH move the wardrobes together or do you have any helpful (strong) friends who could help? Sounds like the carpet will be a lovely surprise for DH when he comes home.

ToffeeWhirl · 14/09/2013 09:38
ToffeeWhirl · 14/09/2013 09:40

PA - actually, on further reading of that thread, it looks as if it depends very much on the company you go with. Some will move furniture, provided you empty it first.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/09/2013 09:58

Toffee - I have always used the Organised Mum Calendars, they are 15 month Sept-Dec, so you get a good overlap, far better than just 12 month ones. This will be the first year I don't buy one Sad. I really liked being able to copy over all the birthdays etc now rather than in Dec/Jan when there is so much else going on. However being electronic (when it works properly) is far more efficient for us. My DH relying totally on me was one reason we switched....

OP posts:
Blueandwhitelover · 14/09/2013 10:16

tada
have hoovered already throughout-not as grand as it seems lol
first load of washing out, second in

bacon cooking for sw breakfast

toffee- filofaxes are the way to go

bitchy- hope the meeting at the school went ok- ds1 was rung about so many times i felt they had me on speed dial

BitchytheGreat · 14/09/2013 10:58

Blueandwhite not really it is just one more incident which forms part of a whole bigger situation and was one of the main reasons why i couldn't sleep. Ds was told last night to not wake me up before so at precisely 9:02am, he came in and told me the time and asked lots of load complicated questions about vitamins. We are currently falling out as he can't follow a simple instruction and it really pisses me off. And he is currently lying about whether or not he has eaten breakfast. Really not had enough sleep 5am is far too early to be going to bed when you are awoke at 9am. Hmm

ZingWantsCake · 14/09/2013 11:01

toffee

don't put me in the naughty corner! I'm sick!

BitchytheGreat · 14/09/2013 11:17

Then the naughty corner is the best place for you. there are comfy seats. drinks, snacks and everything else you might want. Naughty corner is just the chillout area of the thread it is not a bad thing. promise Grin

Steamedcabbage · 14/09/2013 11:35

Hi all, so glad you are out of hospital Nicknacks - hope you have lots of support at home and you can take it steady Brew

Thanks for all your kind words about dh. He felt so well (and all post-op tests were so good) that he came out of hospital a day early so we couldn't have been more fortunate really. He's just a bit more tired than usual so taking it steady (well, as steady as he ever does - having to tie him down to the sofa every so often). Bought him a new jumper yesterday because he has lost quite a bit of weight since this all started (which he needed to).

PA Sorry the parental care is hard going atm Brew.

Fwiw whenever we have the floors sanded/polished here (no carpets) the company move the furniture from one side of the room to the other as they do it. But they sometimes ask for cupboards/wardrobes to be emptied first. The important thing is that it is all negotiated and agreed with prior to starting - so everyone knows what they are doing - and what is included in price.

Whoknows thanks for links. Dh is always trying to get me to swap to electronic calendar system and I am the old Luddite who is resisting.

Blueyeshadow many happy returns to your dh and ds2 (at the approp times) - hope you have a lovely family celebration!

Toffee¨just catching up with thread and wanted to say huge congrats to your ds1 for eating out at a restaurant and for doing so well generally. That is terrific news! Good on him (and you!) Hope ds2 is feeling better and a bit more his usual size Smile

Ellie hope you have fun with dn tonight (and you manage to get some sleep too of course!)

Bitchy good to hear ds feeling better! [big vat of caffeine] for you ...they are very big on hot mangles over here btw (but for ironing). There's one in every laundrette. Great for sheets and tablecloths. They even sell them in shops at £££££. I've been saving up for one for 10 yrs saddo that I am. Will probably be another 10 yrs before I've saved enough!

Just chaotic achievements are harder won!! Ditto what Toffee said about your determination.

Your friend sounds lovely Jess!

You sound as if you have a lot on your plate Jemima stay firm over PTA!! Hope you can find a small moment or three just for yourself this w/e. Congrats to your dd and the band - will be big commitment for you too on top of hockey ...

Hope you feel better soon Zing

Sorry you are feeling tired/below par Swan Brew

Big waves to blueandwhitelover Goth Feetheart Pushme Trazzles Dizzy Castle Honu Engels Asheth Wendy Mumof3 Nettie Snowflake Mummy and eveyrone else I've inevitably missed.

State of house atm = taking large breath and pause after mahoosive general putting to rights for start of term. Now have to capitalise on above and not let it drift back and tackle the more detailed bits. Starting to get organised ie finally, finally got small chest of drawers on ground hall floor to house hats/scarves/gloves for this winter (instead of them being piled untidily on a chair as before). Now need to put up two coat racks/key rack/mirror (yes after 10 years dynamo that I --am). Also need to get mahoosive curtain or something organised for back of front door that lets a veritable hurricane of a draft through its creaking panels. Dreading the cold this winter (and the gloom in this house).

Right, am done with chores today - going out for a long walk to blow the cobwebs away ....

Have a good weekend everyone!

PS What is a dremel?????

Blueandwhitelover · 14/09/2013 12:36

am now being lazy and sitting in the sunshine -after having had to bail out ds3 again as there seems to be more month than money for him-grrrrrr

bitchy-can i ask how old ds is?

elliepac · 14/09/2013 13:11

Ta da:-
Washing x 2
Drying (is it a bad thing that i have resorted to the dryer already?)
Putting away.
Tidy dc's bedrooms
S/s bathroom
Food shop
Washed up
Tidied living room and dining room

To do:-
More putting away
Friend and dc's round for coffee
Pick DN up
Pray he sleeps

BitchytheGreat · 14/09/2013 13:20

Ds is nearly nine.

BitchytheGreat · 14/09/2013 15:20

Sorry about flying through earlier. Ds is being rather challenging and fragile in equal measures today. Not good when i have a migraine triggered by stress and lack of sleep. Overloading my blood sugar and mainlining the pain killers just to get through the day. And the choice about the chest of drawers has been pretty much taken out of my hands as the old one has become so unstable that it is a night mare to use.

ta da
laundry x 2
some science stuff with ds
a good few hours trying to get some sort of order on my room
sort out ds' schedule for next week.
Write list of important things to organise fornext week (incl sorting afterschool club)

Struggling with ds' need to make constant noise and be out of control. AM really looking forward to an early night!

ToffeeWhirl · 14/09/2013 23:01

Agree with Bitchy that the naughty corner is the best place for sick fledglings , as well as exhausted and CBA fledglings .

WhoKnows - I use the Organised Mum calendar too. I like the one with several columns for each family member (not that anyone else in the family looks at it Hmm).

Blueandwhite - I can't cope with filofaxes for some reason Confused, so just stick to the calendar and my brain (the latter not so reliable).

SC - lovely to see you posting again. Good news that your DH's op went so well (and bonus weight loss into the bargain Wink).

Bitchy - sounds like you have had a challenging day with DS. Hope you both get sleep tonight.

Trazzletoes · 15/09/2013 08:40
