white pillow cases turned bleurghh colour by DH

Does anyone else have a problem with their DH making white pillow cases a funny colour? My DH is dark haired and washes his hair every morning. I like crisp white bed linen. As it's only on bed for a week or two max I routinely wash on 40 degrees (with Ecover) but they still come out with a yellow patch. Have tried more chemicals and a higher wash temperature to no avail. Any ideas anyone or am I on my own with this odd problem? past co-habitees have not done this to my pillow cases just DH

My exH used to do this. It was one of the things that I put on my list to avoid in future relationships. Smile

I have a bald sweaty head dp... Watching with interest! I hate it!

YoniBottsBumgina · 10/08/2013 18:06

Bleach? I know someone on here ages ago said you're supposed to wash bed linen at 60 because of "human grease" (ewwwwwwwww!)

ecofreckle · 10/08/2013 18:07

Can you tell by just looking at them? Or do you get them to sleep in your bed for a week before deciding they're a keeper? My dh is practically perfect in every way so going to have to keep him. Am hoping there might be a solution beyond dumping him...

Yes! Try soaking in napisan, that's quite good, line drying in sunshine helps too.
It's like an oily essence of man, isn't it? Hmm

StaticSockMonster · 10/08/2013 18:25

This drives me mad!
My OH showers everyday but we still end up with pillow cases like this.
Also, he's got a right sweaty head so they smell too Blush

WitchOfEndor · 10/08/2013 18:30

Is it his hair wax? DH uses wax and its really difficult to get out, although the plus side is I always know what cover to use on his pillow!

If you can bleach, do. If not then steep in Vanish then a hot wash, and sunlight is a great bleaching agent so line dry ( if we have good weather) rather than tumble dry.

OrangeLily · 10/08/2013 18:40

I wash mine at 90! Stays white and DH is sweaty of head and wears wax but does wash every day.

derektheladyhamster · 10/08/2013 18:43

Sunshine is the best solution. I really notice the discolouration in the winter Sad

ecofreckle · 10/08/2013 19:39

yoni human grease?! And scon oily essence of man? Yes! Exactly. So pleased my dh isn't the Only one that does this and so pleased I'm not the Only one whose washing regime doesn't end in victory over the human grease. THanks for tips ladies and gents. Sounds like I need to treat them like I treat the nappies then.
Anyone know if currently yellow ones are retrieveable? Or by washing on forty have I set the stain?
As you can tell my Saturday night is all go.

I gave up and bought yellow pillowcases for DH's side of the bed.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 10/08/2013 19:53

Is it drool?

Just do a hotter wash (40 is quite low, a quality white duvet cover could withstand hotter).

Laquila · 10/08/2013 19:55

Ugh I have the same problem with my husband, drives me insane!

He doesn't wear anything product-wise in his hair so I know it's not that. Actually he has the same effect on the sheets, so it's definitely not a hair thing. I think it's just a MAN thing. It's very irritating, though! I wash all bed linens at 60 degrees with Fairy non-bio (allergic to most other stuff) and a bit of Vanish powder. Sometimes I do them at 80 degrees and it doesn't seem to make any difference - neither does line-drying.

Gaaah OP if you find a fail safe solution please report back!

CrayolaLola · 10/08/2013 19:56

I buy new pillows every year for this very reason! Not much you can do about it really cos heads do sweat, especially on hot humid nights. I find changing the pillowcases 2 or 3 times a week and washing them on a 60 degree wash does help keep them nice and white. Also, proper egyptian cotton tends to not discolour as much as polycotton - John Lewis ones aren't too pricey and hold up well to constant hot washes.

FreeButtonBee · 10/08/2013 20:02

Mine DH is the same, think it's head sweat. I wash at 90 degrees semi regularly and at 60 the Reston the time. Think 40 is too low.

JustLikeBritishRail · 10/08/2013 20:03

We no longer used white bed linen. Hmm Agree with trying 90deg wash and a spoon of vanish. Worth a shot.

Angelik · 10/08/2013 20:11

it's a male thing. dh's side of the bed is very yellow but so is ds's bed sheets and he is only 3.5!

SwedishEdith · 10/08/2013 20:22

Shirt collars as well. I'm going to start buying coloured bedding - only solution, I think.

Methe · 10/08/2013 20:32

We have pale blue bedding and dhs' are still yellowish! Gross.

thenightsky · 10/08/2013 21:13

I purposely buy white cotton bed linen so I can wash it at 90 degrees. had a huge scoop of the white Vanish and a full dose of Ariel bio. Bio is the only product to keep stuff REALLY white.

I had pale blue polycotton before, and DH's side was always yellowy.

OrangeLily · 10/08/2013 22:11

CrayolaLola - mines are John Lewis lovely cotton ones too! No discolouration.

theboutiquemummy · 10/08/2013 22:17

A pillow liner is a must and wash the pillows regularly because it goes into the fibres n then soaks into the clean pillow case bleeurgh

OrangeLily · 10/08/2013 22:18

I use two pillowcases but no liners. I thought everyone did that?

poocatcherchampion · 11/08/2013 08:05

I have this problem. I add a scoop of whitener stuff like vanish to the Tash occasionally. and yes to sunshine.

poocatcherchampion · 11/08/2013 08:06

*wash obviously. Smile.
