Does anyone else have a problem with their DH making white pillow cases a funny colour? My DH is dark haired and washes his hair every morning. I like crisp white bed linen. As it's only on bed for a week or two max I routinely wash on 40 degrees (with Ecover) but they still come out with a yellow patch. Have tried more chemicals and a higher wash temperature to no avail. Any ideas anyone or am I on my own with this odd problem? past co-habitees have not done this to my pillow cases just DH

Bio powders what you want. A nice long hot wash.

it is natural oil from the skin. It goes yellow as it oxidises over time, so you will see it appear on collars of white shirts that have been put away looking clean, as well as on pillowcases. White cotton will stand up to a hotter, more intense wash than synthetic or mixed fibres. as it is colourless when fresh you may think the things only need a quick wash. If you do a hot intensive wash for white cotton towels or T-shirts, put the pillowcases in with that. I think perhaps ironing makes it worse.

Some face washes are good for oily skin, but it will get oily again overnight.

A hot wash with plenty of powder will get the grease out. Once it has oxidised yellow youi need a pre-wash stain remover that is good for greasy marks. Bleach is no good.

By the time he is old and withered his skin will be drier.

BTW some women also have greasy oily skin....

Everything is cotton here and bedding is usually at 60 degrees (but then I read on here that biopowder only works at 40 degrees Confused) I'll have to try hotter.

Is it drool?

Dh used to leave brown drool patches in the bed. [Blush]
The dentist then told him he had gum disease. Several sessions with the hygienist latet and a strict flossing routine and its stopped! Shock :)

I may even get fancy white bedding when we do up our room! :)

My side of the bed is not immune either, but then I have quite oily skin. I second powder bleach and drying in the sun.

Same problem here, and a greasy head patch on his side of the headboard Angry

I have no idea what the hell he's secreting, but his hair doesn't appear or feel dirty and is washed every day. I think it's some sort of brain wax that leaks out at night.

You need to wash your bed linen hotter than 40° (far too low) and a better quality detergent. I wash my pillow cases at 60° or 90° with Ariel and Vanish.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/08/2013 17:53

DH does this to our bedding. Yuck.

I buy new pillows every year, and the bedding gets washed at 60 with a dollop of Vanish and hung out in the sun at every available opportunity.

I buy the John Lewis premium 100% cotton pillowcases, and they last about 18 months - 2 years before I replace them.

Must. Have. Lovely. White. Bedding. Grin

It's not drool - it's definitely body-shaped. There's obviously no actual magic solution from reading this it seems. Change bedding daily? Shock Grin

DH turns my lovely white pillowcases yellow. I hot-soak them in a Biotex solution (brilliant stuff) then wash at 60 with a Glo-White sachet in addition to bio liquid and Vanish. Seems to do the trick.

(I'm kind to the environment in other ways to make up for it.)

thenightsky · 13/08/2013 19:01

I'm suprised expensive John Lewis pillow cases only last 18 months Shock

Mine are cheap Ikea 100% cotton. I bought them in 2007 and they are as white as when they were brand new.

Another one with a man ming DH. He washes at least once a day, sometimes even three times! He is banned from sitting on the sofa in his pants as my lovely white sofa was getting yellow and smelly from him too. I wash at 60 with oxi action and bio powder. Sometimes I soak the sheets and sofa covers in Milton for extra whiteness!
