Welcome to the May Fledgling FLYers thread! :-)
... where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of and chatting along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that we can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave us with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling we get when we are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once.

To avoid being inundated with details, we advise not signing up to the Big Tent.

We are in the process of following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

Flylady site is here

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

All the links for the babysteps and missions will be posted here every day and we'll all be here to cheer each other on. Thanks to SC, Blue, Silvery and Goth for leading us through since January and for the brilliant OP I've just cut and pasted.

ToffeeWhirl · 16/05/2013 09:50

Morning all. A belated happy birthday to SC.

PA - hope you are feeling better today and that there are no more floods.

Have had my DM staying, which means the house is tidier than usual because she helps out Smile. Also, my fortnightly cleaner is coming today, so house will have a thorough clean.

Have some sort of bug (I think it's probably the one DS2 had), but went to sleep at 9pm last night and didn't wake up till 7, so that has helped. Looked like one of those pictures that have been artificially aged this morning though - unfortunately, the bags and lines were real Sad. I thought extra sleep was meant to make you look better Confused.

To do :

Washing up
Kitchen surfaces
Swish and swipe in bathroom
Washing on
Room rescues throughout house
Home ed
Lunch
School run
etc.

Hope you all have a good day.

Back with tomorrow's links shortly .............

ToffeeWhirl · 16/05/2013 21:38

Washing machine has just flooded the kitchen .

There's a hole in the seal. Have just looked up how to replace the seal, but it's too complicated for my non-DIY brain, so will have to have it replaced at unnecessary expense.

Wine anyone?

Other than that, have had an ok day and house is looking presentable. Really need to tackle today's mission, but will have to put it off till tomorrow now as I'm going to have an early night again.

Narky - hope you hear good news from that parent very soon.

Bitchy - hope you feel better tomorrow.

Waves to everyone else.

Urgh, feel like walking death today. lingering migraine. Ds is creating over school. Not really surprised but cba with it. And I really should have a list and get something done.

superfluouscurves · 17/05/2013 09:15

Hi all. Thanks again for yet more birthday good wishes.

Will join you in 'recovery corner' Bitchy. Hope you feel better soon and take it steady.

Spent night before last with d & v (typical - have had no stomach bugs in years and then get two horrible ones within the space of about 10 wks). Wish I could say it was down to birthday over-indulgence but only had half a glass of rosé! (Dh had flown back valiantly from Middle East overnight but his tooth fell out on the plane - second time this has happened - so we only had time for a brief lunch, then he spent most of time at dentist, then he fell asleep .... . Then he was kept up all night by me again Grin ) Spent the day yesterday a bit pale and ginger but much better. Going now to wipe down all loos, sinks, taps, and door handles with Dettol to hopefully prevent dd and dh from getting it.

Fortunately, have kept pretty much on top of ground floor - so that is reasonably respectable. And fortnightly ironing lady came on Wed morning so laundry fairly up-to-date. Dh has made a hash of kitchen but cleaner hopefully coming today (for the first time in a month). So she can deal with that. Haven't dared look in dd's play room ... .

Hope you are feeling better too Doris

Sorry about the washing machine Toffee what a pain! Hope you are OK (hate to say it but extreme fatigue was how my bug started - here's hoping it's not the same one and you feel better soon!)

Glad to hear the meeting went well Narky

Welcome back ComradeJing

Thanks for links Whoknows (don't worry about it Castle you are doing great!)

PA what do the locals do (just being nosy!) in terms of cooking? Do they cook inside or outside or on a porch or something?

Huge waves to Castle Silvery Fireandblood Goth Feetheart Lplate Ellie Newbie Blue Pushme Trazzles and everyone I've missed!

ToffeeWhirl · 17/05/2013 09:39

SC - sorry you and DH have had such a difficult time. Hope you are on the mend today - D&V is such a miserable thing to have. I'm not feeling sick, thankfully, just aching and a bit wheezy. Had a good night's sleep last night.

We are visiting a school for DS1 for the second time this afternoon. I never thought this day would come, but he is interested in going (he has a friend there who loves it). There are many hurdles to jump first, not least overcoming his anxieties (he hasn't even been able to visit it yet!), but it's a good sign that he wants to try something new.

DH is trying to mend the hole in the washing machine seal with superglue Hmm.

superfluouscurves · 17/05/2013 09:47

How exciting for your ds1 Toffee! Hope the visit goes well! And good to hear you had a bit of decent shut-eye.

ToffeeWhirl · 17/05/2013 09:54

Thanks, SC.

Jdub · 17/05/2013 10:00

AT LAST! It's Friday!
A very unproductive week here, but I resolve to make amends!
OH has bought a wooden toy box from a charity shop - big bargain! which will swallow up a big pile of 'stuff', and that makes me VERY happy!!

done
DW loaded
up, fed and out

to do tonight/this weekend
DW on
washing
clothes away
filing
dust everywhere
both bathrooms
change my bed
make cakes
wax legs (swimming on Sunday, for my sins!)
lots more

Have a productive day and a great weekend xx

Swanhilda · 17/05/2013 12:44

hi, some cleaning has been done today, as the prescence of the heroic cleaning lady spurs me into action. It seems to take two of us to tackle half the house Sad and I have created an enormous pile of dirty washing in the process. I will use list later to remind me what we achieved...

Kittens were discovered to be using a certain manky curtain as a litter tray, despite the official litter tray being at hand, which caused a certain amount of hilarity [not] this morning. However, as a seasoned cat owner I am phlegmatic about these things Grin. Luckily it was in the playroom. I think the time has come for them to go to their new homes....First one off on Monday

Toffee that is very exciting about Ds1 showing an interest. I think half the battle is not getting upset at thought of something new, even if you end up not actually doing it. We are still on waiting list for ds2 preferred school, but he is slowly getting resigned to going to the second choice school (which is ds1's school). He was in a panic about it earlier; he is so different from his older brother who was tremendously keen on idea of secondary (if less keen on reality Hmm

done
dusted picture rails in dcs rooms x 2
changed all sheets in dcs rooms
put all clothes away
cleaning lady did ironing
cleaned up 6 cat messes!!! yuk
dw
put out rubbish
put out milkbottles
recycling kept in line
washed curtain
paid elec bill
talked to dr AGAIN about referral...dratted referrals take weeks and weeks,a nd then the dr loses the info, usually and you are back to beginning again [rats] I am beginning to think it is better to go in guns blazing from beginning

SC hope you feeling better and Dh's tooth is preventing him from doing too much further culinary exploration
Feet enjoy camping, and a bore about SATs. This has been a rather pleasant week with Yr 6 Sats though, no homework ironically...I don't care what they get, I've decided it is native talent or nothing.

BlueEyeshadow · 17/05/2013 13:16

Good luck with the school visit Toffee. Hope it all goes well.

Today has been utterly thrown out by suddenly having to get the PC to the repair shop AGAIN. Seriously hacked off with this machine now.

Will attempt the house bleugh this afternoon though.

Big waves to all. [Leaves tray of Brew on the bar.]

PositiveAttitude · 17/05/2013 14:19

Toffee such a huge step for DS1!! Just take it a little bit at a time, but you must be so pleased! I am Grin for you both.

SC - well, the Cambodians do meals VERY differently! Firstly they do all cook outside just using small fires that they light themselves, no stoves or anything, but they eat their largest meal of the day for breakfast, which is when is is dry. then I suppose if it is raining by the late afternoon they just have a bowl of cold leftover rice - they have rice with every meal, 3 times a day and mountains of it!! When I get home I never want to see another grain of rice..... EVER!!!! The pots of various rice dishes are left to bubble and warm all throughout the day and dished up when needed.
Generally breakfast - rice porridge - disgusting dishwater looking bowl of slop with yesterday leftover rice meat, fish and veg - certainly nothing that looks appetizing at 5am!!!
Then at about 11 - a mountain of rice with small bits of BBQed , meats, fish or veg - no fridges, so they have to cook it after buying it in the market in the morning, before the 40 degree heat makes it rancid!!
Evening meal - lunch time leftovers with water added and stewed all afternoon to make it into a soup, sort of then this is watered down again and left overnight to be the porridge for breakfast.

I am dreaming of McDonald's I tell you!! Proper roast dinners........ slow cooked lamb.......proper sausages and mash........ oh my, I will be 3 stone heavier by the time I come back here at the end of July!!!!

All these thoughts of food and I have lost all thoughts of housework!!
