(With many thanks again to Jdub for title inspiration!!)

OK, because we are all so good at chatting housework, we need a second January thread ... .

... where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of Wine along the way.

This little-and-often system is designed so that we can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in weekly designated zones of the house; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave us with more time to do other, more interesting things instead!

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling we get when we are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once.

To avoid being inundated with details, we advise not signing up to the Big Tent

We are in the process of following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps

  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

Flylady site here

Don't worry if you are behind; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again anyway!

Carry on everybody!

Oh, bugger it. I used my real name! What a plonker. That'll teach me not to multi-task. Watching tv, talking here and having FB convos.

Welcome Beginner Jump right in! Smile

Hi Crikey Welcome. That certainly is a long working day for you. I also spend most of the weekend cleaning. Very sad isn't it?
A few people here say that the longer you stick to this system, the easier and quicker everything gets.
I can see that, have been doing a morning and before bed routine for nearly 4 years with the missions on and off.
My place isn't too bad, but I need a plan and lists to keep it that way. All has to be planned and visual or I won't do it

Grin Thank you silvery your pep talk it has made me laugh. I am going to stop feeling sorry for myself!

Welcome beginner and crikey.

Im off to bed now as Ive set my alarm a bit earlier to give myself some more time in the morning in the hope that it may help me complete my to do list Hmm

'See' you all tomorrow.

Thanks SilveryMoon!!

Crikey - I sympathise. This is my first time not working (well, in paid employment) since uni. (Am 37 now...) And I spent a lot of time cleaning, washing, cooling etc at weekends. When i wasn't working at weekends! Exhausting. Recommend a cleaner if you can afford it (even just for 2.5 hours a week). And lowering your standards. Or maybe that's what got me into this mess in the first place Wink.

BeginnerSAHM · 21/01/2013 22:27

Good for you Mercury Be proud that you got to ingterview stage! That is a huge accomplishment in itself. Pleased I got a smile out of you Wink

I have reported that post and asked for it to be removed because I put my real name in (prat).
Off now to bed to finish my book. Back to work tomorrow. We have an outing in the afternoon so shouldn't be too bad/long a day.
See you all tomorrow

Oh, list:
Up and make beds
Swish and swipe
Shower and dress
Feed cats
Laundry (in my manky machine)
Work
pop to tesco
Homework
Cook dinner (sausage and courgette pasta)
Clean kitchen
Pack lunch for wednesday
Stray items away
Mission/detail
CLEAN WASHING MACHINE
lay out clothes
shine sink
bed

That'll do. That'll do.

Evening all,

Sorry to hear about the PGCE Mercury, hopefully the next interview will go your way.

Crikey - I think a cleaner would be the best solution too, otherwise it does pile into the weekends, there are a few people on here who work full time and will be able to offer the benefit of their experience but they often don't find time to post much during the week. Hope the encouragement on here will help too.

Beginner - your description of your home sounds familiar! Hopefully this thread will help you out too.

Ta-da!

Morning routine
School run
Town to buy thermal gloves and bread
Home
Clean bathroom (more of a swish and swipe to get rid of the remnants of henna)
Clean kitchen floor (proper into corners with a cloth, not just pushing the mop round)
Wash towels and bathmats
Half an hour of OU work
Make meatballs
Light lunch
Swimming
Home, stick meatballs in slow cooker
Watch Doctors, whilst opening mail and cleaning out handbag
Hotspot desk and find some important paperwork
Win £50 on Premium Bonds!
School run
Take DCs to town for haircuts
Finish dinner
Evening routine
OU tutorial
Unpack Ocado order

Still to do
sew names on new glove (expensive) while watching Corrie

Work tomorrow, so limited Flying. I definitely feel more energetic now than I have done since I had my operation (September), actually since last spring when I first had health problems. Think the swimming is helping too. Onwards and upwards (hopefully!)

My flying has nose dived a bit - house seems to be a mess again. On the plus side, persuaded DH to bin loads of clothes & coats that he hasn't worn since I've known him - so I have two black bin bags to go to the charity shop.

While try to get my flying to take off again tomorrow.

Just so sorry to hear about your accident - hope you're not in too much pain. Hope your dentist gets it sorted soon so you don't have to listen to any of his stupid thoughts for too much longer.

Night all!

What a nightmare for you just lets hope things start picking up for you soon.

and mercury fingerscrossed for your next interview. I was told once to go in to the interview like you already have the job - if you pretend to be confident you are more likely to appear as if you are!

swish and swipe
phone calls to make
emails to write

Morning everyone and welcome to the newbies!

Schools are open again here, but DS2 is still coughing and feeling rough, so I'm letting him stay at home.

Found my old control journal yesterday and I'm making an effort to stick to my routines again, which means that I have a 'to do' list for this morning:

B/fasts (half done)
Meds for DS1
Dress to slippers
Swish and swipe
Change bathroom hand towel
Make beds
Put washing on
Unload d/w
Reload d/w
Wipe kitchen surfaces
Empty kitchen bin
Room rescue in dining room
DS1's Maths tutor here
Room rescue DS2's bedroom
Handwriting and science with DS1

That'll do for this morning. Hope you all have a good day.

Morning and thank you for the welcome! Looking forward to getting to know you all.

So, I think I'm getting the idea... Haven't achieved a lot today and have a long to do list but I'll attempt to make it realistic for my first day attempting to fly...!

Done

Tidy up and clear away breakfast
Wash-up last night's saucepans
Taken children to school/nursery (bit late... me getting dressed late, DC1 decided on a last minute poo, which takes a while)
Load and put dishwasher on
Take down children's washing and fold/sort

To do

Put grown-up washing load on
Order new handles for kitchen cupboards
Call nannytax to make sure final tax payment is correct etc.
Put children's laundry away
Do some of my handwashing (have huge laundry bag full..)
Tax return check
Get together CRB docs/evidence so can do reading at DC1's school
Find children's red books and check boosters etc
Shine sink...First baby step!
15 minutes de-clutter - our bathroom cupboard
Tidy playroom pre school pick-up (it's not too bad but it's always tricky as it is in dire need of a de-clutter)
Tidy up playroom after playdate this afternoon (no doubt as DCs will be v tired and whiney)

I have a million other things I should do but know I won't manage them today (name tapes on scarves, gloves, hats, lots of de-cluttering/house-organising etc.). It's rather overwhelming...!

Do I put things on the list like spending 30 minutes doing some piano practice (haven't played for years and I'd like to start again now I have some time to myself)? And cooking meals?

Lilleth - hope you're ok.

My worry about cleaning the machine is dislodging a load of Shit that will end up in clothes.

Beginner, making a control journal is part of the daily babysteps. It will all come together. Fly lady promotes doing job for 15 minutes then putting your feet up for 15 minutes.

In a rush as at work but will bbl

Report
BeginnerSAHM · 22/01/2013 11:02

Ah, I see, thank you SilveryMoon. Sorry, jumping ahead! I like the putting your feet up idea!

Re the washing machine - I reckon it'll be ok. I've chucked loads of bleach etc. into ours before.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/01/2013 12:35

Three years in and I've never really got to grips with the control journal, my daily routines are committed to memory and I tend to do home blessing on a Monday snd detailed cleaning and decluttering as and whdn I can fit it in. I have got detailed cleaning lists but rarely look at them. Other elements if ghd CJ are elsewhere, eg address book, important info notebook that I already had.
