Someone has recommended the plastic bags and spray approach for the metal shelves (would love a quick reminder to the name!)

Another great idea! Then they may think I'm some kind of domestic goddess!!

I had a man in, cost £80 for a range cooker. I was embarrassed that it was disgusting but he said he'd seen a lot worse!

DeafLeopard · 01/01/2013 23:00

Blame mucky oven on previous occupant?

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2013 23:01

I like the neighbours seeing the Oven man's van on the drive. I imagine they think I am some sort of brilliant cook, using my oven all the time. Grin

Ponders · 01/01/2013 23:01

no need for shame - however bad it is they'll have seen worse

that's what I always tell myself-

If you try to do it yourself you risk cleaning chemicals ruining the coating on the doors/sides...so you would then have the expense of having to get a new oven.....so get a man in...much better idea....

BTW the man who steam cleaned my oven told me this....so yes obviously sales pitch guff....but a) it may be true
b) Sounds convincing enough to persuade DH that man in is worthwhile

And as for the village gossip thing- they will all just be jealous of you getting a man in and ask if he was any good...what pride is there to be had in being organised/dull enough to keep your oven clean?

BaconAndAvocado · 01/01/2013 23:08

NY resolution (re domestic duties, oo-er!) Get Man In To Clean Oven and then regularly clean oven myself.

Will bite the bullet and phone cleaner when DH at work tomorrow.

VerySmallSqueak · 01/01/2013 23:10

I don't like to use the really hardcore chemicals.

I just do it with Cif and a scourer, use brillos on the shelves, and pronounce it clean enough.

I've always wondered why dirty ovens are such a big deal (until the black fat liquifies and drips out of the bottom which is a bit bleurgh). Surely the high temperatures you cook at kill any germs?

BaconAndAvocado · 01/01/2013 23:11

fishfingers you are right about gossip. Because of my overwhelming laziness I have deep insecurities about housework.... Not enough to make me actually do any though Xmas Smile

Our oven man pointed out the damage done by domestic cleaning products too. I politely feigned interest, there is no way I would spend £60 having my oven cleaned on a regular basis. After all, the dirt is regularly heated to a temp that would kill anything Grin.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2013 23:14

Every time the oven man is here i get the doorbell ringing with people wanting him to go round. They are Envy I tell you!

Ponders · 01/01/2013 23:18

NY resolution (re domestic duties, oo-er!) Get Man In To Clean Oven and then regularly clean oven myself

ho yes, me too

every year Wink

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 01/01/2013 23:23

So, when DH snorted at 'getting a man in' did he say - 'I'll do it at the weekend love'?

No

Thought not Xmas Grin

If you have the money, just get the man in - they don't give a shiney shit how dirty it is and funnily enough, they probably have better things to do 'out of hours' than discuss who has the dirtiest oven Xmas Grin

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 01/01/2013 23:26

My friend gets hers done - it's a really big, double width thing with 4 ovens, 8/9 gas hobs etc and it looks amazing when they have it done, the first time they had it done I asked them if it was a new one Blush (good friends I hasten to add and I'm there several times a week). It is normally very very greasy/dirty unlike mine and it cost them £130. Worth every penny.

mine doesn't get used enough to get dirty

No chipping DH strangely didn't offer to clean oven at weekend and when I enquired how much an evening of supping the hard stuff with his bum chums costs he simmered down a bit Xmas Grin

Our oven is a range though not as big as yr friend's sounds. Having said that one of the ovens is virtually spotless as it never gets used.

Very excited!!! Have booked in oven cleaning man for next week!!

Haven't told DH yet, but maybe he doesn't need to know at all......

Can't wait to see my "new" oven. And then of course I will regularly scrub and clean it Xmas Wink

CBuzz · 02/01/2013 20:16

'tis funny how professional oven cleaners always seem to be male yet I would bet that at home almost 90 percent of ovens get cleaned by us females!

I have used said sheet drgarnett but it only keeps a small portion of the oven clean.

OP posts:
BaconAndAvocado · 03/01/2013 17:51

But will, probably buy one post-oven man!

ChasingSquirrels · 03/01/2013 17:52

I used Mr Muscle Oven on my oven door last week - the grime just wiped off, apart from one corner which I sprayed again which sorted it.

Shallishanti · 03/01/2013 17:59

I am also planning to get a man in (even have him booked)
Interesting about the Lakeland sheet thingy, but I have a range size cooker has anyone seen a bigger one?

NotAnotherPackedLunch · 03/01/2013 18:01

The problem with cleaning my oven door first is that I can see into the disgusting interior.

Must remember to do the door last next time in case I run out of time half way through the job. I don't want the embarrassment of displaying the interior for a few days until I get a chance to finish it again. Blush
