just helping a friend clean her new house and we can't get the dark stains at the bottom of the toilet bowl to go away

we've used cillit bang abs scrubbed then more cillit bang and left for few hours and no luck

tried bleach and limescale remover too.

i vaguely remember something about denture cleaning tablets?

Yes this is what I need to know too.

My loos have bad breath and it is only apparent when I scrub down the bottom (so to speak).

I am wondering if it is because I now have 3 loos so they are used less often??? Our old bathroom was v manky in many ways but the loo didn't stink when I cleaned it.

Do these limesacle remedies get rid of smell too???

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 00:03

the Parazone Bleach Blocks (not Bloo) that you put in the cistern will.

Cindermummy · 17/12/2012 00:10

You will have to get down there and scrape the lime scale off with something I use a paint scraper it worksSmile

CuttedUpPear · 17/12/2012 09:55

Don't use a paint scraper or anything sharp - it will take the glaze off the ceramic off the bowl and leave scratches there FOREVER

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 09:56

hands up anyone who believes me about the Parazone blocks?

CuttedUpPear · 17/12/2012 10:16

PigletJohn I believe everything you say! Xmas Smile

VestaCurry · 17/12/2012 14:15

Going to buy those regularly now PigletJohn to keep those stains at bay! I do buy them but switch to other brands sometimes.

Lilymaid · 17/12/2012 14:22

Spirits of Salts - see this old thread

IShallWearMidnight · 17/12/2012 14:29

I've just bought a parazone thing PJ, so will report back Grin.

stoofadoof · 17/12/2012 16:48

berti don't use the rim block things - cause more blocked toilets than owt else at work!

XBenedict · 17/12/2012 18:06

When I first used denture tablets I thought they were crap until someone told me in bad toilets use the whole tube - amazing!

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 19:26

vom :0=

BertieBotts · 17/12/2012 20:01

That's what I was worried about CuttedUpPear! Rented house so I don't want to break it Grin

InvaderZim · 17/12/2012 20:11

Best thread ever. I didn't know I could do anything at all about those stains! adds denture tabs to shopping list

KindleMum · 17/12/2012 20:15

When I've rented places where the loo has years of neglected and discoloured limescale, Harpic ( the black bottle) has always worked for me. Leave it overnight or while at work, scrub, repeat a couple of times if needed. When I moved into DH's flat I made him do this (loo looked grim!) and he was most impressed.

2beornot · 17/12/2012 20:17

Yes yes yes to pushing the water round the u-bend. Then use "lifeguard 3-way toilet cleaner". My mum used it when she used to be a cleaner and there really is nothing better!

FTRsawMammykissingSantaClaus · 17/12/2012 20:21

I use a turkey Bastet to get as much water out as possible then put the cillit bang or bleach in then there's no water to dilute it, time consuming but it works Smile

FTRsawMammykissingSantaClaus · 17/12/2012 20:22

Obviously that word is baster Hmm

steben · 17/12/2012 20:24

Marking place as need to do this in new house!

2beornot · 17/12/2012 20:29

Oh and you can use the toilet cleaner on your chrome taps too. I have never seen mine so sparkling!!

PigletJohn · 17/12/2012 20:37

Christmas is coming so you might like to swill that out baster under the cold tap.

BTW acid cleaners can attack chrome. You might have seen pipes in public lavatories where the chrome has been eaten away.

Mynewmoniker · 17/12/2012 20:41

How about using those non-scratch silver brillo type things if you need to scrub? Has anyone tried those with a strong cleaner...and heavy duty cleaning gloves of course.

Hmmmokthen · 17/12/2012 21:12

All I can add is that I once moved into a very grimy house...and my sister cleaned the loo with a paint scraper. Followed by a stack of everything I could lay my hands on (bleach, limescale remover etc) it seemed to work. Yuck!

Sucking all the water out and scrubbing it always sounds like way too much effort TBH Grin I really don't want to spend that much time in close proximity to my toilet!
