Dettol mould and mildew (green bottle) is really good

Bunbaker · 10/12/2012 19:54

Another vote for the Dettol product. It really does work. I smarten up my grout every few months with it. It is excellent.

YDdraigGoch · 10/12/2012 19:55

Probably eventually regrout, but in the short term try toothpaste with "whitener" and a toothbrush.
In my experience unless you pull it all out and start again, it keeps coming back though.

SueFlaysAgainstTheDaleks · 10/12/2012 19:56

I've never had any luck with the Dettol stuff, but went and bought some mould spray from lakeland after a few posters on here raved about it, and it worked like a charm.

RugBugsWearingLittleSantaHats · 10/12/2012 20:00

I mix bleach with bicarb to get a paste that sticks to the grout, leave it 10mins and then shower off. If you've got mould under the sealant though it would benefit from being re-done.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 10/12/2012 20:27

thanks. i will try with the dettol stuff but i think i will have to take it all off and give it a good clean out under. luckily my dad is a tiler and will be able to regrout and seal it for me.

HG mould spray- it's magical stuff.

QueefLatina · 10/12/2012 20:36

Another vote for HG mould spray. You can get it from Lakeland and B&Q.

Rikalaily · 10/12/2012 20:38

HG mould spray Folicacid is right, it's magical stuff!

tassisssss · 10/12/2012 20:38

I tried mould sprays etc for years before discovering neat bleach left on for hours and then showered off just lifts it away. Easy peasy.

Feckthehalls · 10/12/2012 21:34

But OP is asking about the sealant , not grout.

Do these recommendations also work on the black mould that gets ingrained into silicone sealant?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 10/12/2012 21:35

As far as the sealant goes, it will definitely need replacing.

bureni · 10/12/2012 21:40

Just remove all the sealant with a stanley knife and replace with a mildew resistant sealant which is a lot less hassle and cheaper than cleaning the old sealant, these tubes are readily available in good hardware shops and builders suppliers for around 3-4 pounds a tube which is all that is needed.

Beamur · 10/12/2012 21:44

Replace the sealant.
I'd clean the grout with neat bleach and a toothbrush - takes a little while but it will work.
Then use something like the Dettol spray to keep it at bay.

PigletJohn · 10/12/2012 22:50

also get an extractor fan (or use the one you have) to keep the humidity down. Moist bathrooms grow mould and mildew.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 11/12/2012 09:54

i cant get an extractor fan as there are no exterior walls in my bathroom. there is a window that opens into my back hall (extension) but no windows in the hall.

i will replace the sealant and get my dad to see if he has any of the midew resistant stuff, if not i'll get some and scrub teh grout with bleach.

thank you all.

The HG spray works on sealent too, you need to leave it for around and hour but it's all sparkly white afterwards.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 11/12/2012 10:17

thanks Rik we have a shop here that sells HG products so will get down later and see if they have it.

Rikalaily · 11/12/2012 10:21

Make sure you open the windows, it's really strong and make sure you don't get any on you. I've got to do my bathroom ceiling again today, I used a 'lesser product' on it before I got the HG spray to do the rest, the mildew is back where I used the other stuff, where I used the HG is still clear! It's been over 6 months.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 11/12/2012 10:33

hmm, i think i might wait then as i have no bathroom door at the minute and dont want the stuff going all through the house. i will wait til the LL has sorted a new door.

No exterior walls, no window to the outside, and no extractor?

No building regulations approval and no planning permission then :(

It is possible to fit an extractor using a duct, but I have a feeling the owner CBA :( :(

You will always be blighted by condensation, damp and mould.

Sorry
:(

AmberLeaf · 11/12/2012 11:45

Neat thick bleach left for a while then scrub a bit with a nail brush.

Always works for me on both grout and sealant.

Silibilimili · 11/12/2012 11:46

To someone who said they can't get an extractor fan, you can get one that goes inside the bulb...

PigletJohn · 11/12/2012 12:08

Yes (though that sort is not powerful) but the bigger issue is ducting the exhaust so the steam is conveyed outside the house.

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 11/12/2012 12:18

yes probably pigletjohn. i have a dehumidifier in my hotpress for drying laundry. i'm considering buying a second one for the bathroom.

the extension only has a corrugated plastic roof. it was basically a very small outside yard between my kitchen and next door where the bins would be kept. most of the houses have either renovated and done it properly or extended and put on a second level. but mine is just a sheet of plastic and a door which has rotted through leaving a lovely breeze
