Posh hotel quality duvet?

msrisotto · 05/11/2012 21:09

I recently stayed in a very posh London hotel (courtesy of someone else!). I can't look at my duvet the same way since. It feels lumpy and patchy and deeply wanting in comparison. I didn't have the nerve to ask about the make and didn't have to nous to look at the time so am now left obsessing thinking about it somewhat.

I think it was down. I don't know [listless], can anyone recommend a nice plump soft duvet? I would push the boat out with regards to price as bed is my favouritest place in the world.

Can you dry a down and feather duvet in a tumble dryer or will it shrink?

MousyMouse · 11/11/2012 10:49

it will not shrink. the casing is usually cotton.

propitia · 11/11/2012 11:00

You can dry a down/feather duvet in tumbler drier with tennis balls/drier balls but you will need to run the drier through a number of cycles, giving the duvet a thorough shaking in between, as otherwise it will clump, & worse, may well go mouldy...(bitter experience emotion).

clothaddict · 11/11/2012 19:40

Yes I'd never heard wool til started looking for one and spotted on j Lewis site so I googled for more info. Made sheeps wool. Good anti allergy, more breathable, can be washed, warm. I'm very impressed its super snuggly and cosy and just what I was after.

hattymattie · 11/11/2012 20:08

parentally come back and review - I want to buy a duvet now.

parentallyinept · 11/11/2012 20:58

Sorry, just seen this!

Ok, my review: amazing!! It arrived within 24 hours of delivery (I'm in S E, company based in Scotland!), the quality is fantastic - its stitched as square pockets so the feathers can't migrate, it's so warm and cozy, it's lightweight but still feels 'substantial' (i opted for the 13.5 tog), it has a general air of 'luxury bedding' (tho to be fair, I've previously only had basic hollow fibre duvets so anything would feel posh in comparisonGrin), there are no annoying 'bits' of feather poking through the cover as its such a high down percentage, and it is just like sleeping in a cloud (I'd imagine!). It also has the 'nomite' label and says it is machine washable. I am so, so pleased with it, and definitely recommend!

HTH

parentallyinept · 11/11/2012 21:00

Oh and yes it is breathable - I tend to get quite hot, but it doesn't feel sweaty or anything. All in all, the best £120 I've spent!

MortimersRaven · 12/11/2012 03:29

Grin happy for you parentally

hattymattie · 12/11/2012 19:33

Ooh great - I'm going to get one - although I'll have to pay postage as am in France grrr. Also will have to persuade DH as he reckons 40E at IKEA is the most one should pay for a duvet!

sweetp96 · 13/11/2012 14:46

Thank you parentally for such a lovely review. I also found this duvet, its on sale 60% and got a good review on their site too, but still wonder anyone here have tried it yet?

MousyMouse · 13/11/2012 14:52

hatty IKEA duvets are fine (if not as nice as others). dh has had his for about 10 years now and it still is in very good condition despite it being washed at least once a year.

MousyMouse · 13/11/2012 15:54

oh, and it is a very good reason to go for single duvets: you get your extra naice duvet and you dh can get the 20? hollow fibre polyester one from ikea...

wildstrawberryplace · 13/11/2012 15:55

Inspired by this thread I am awaiting delivery of a 9 tog 100% Canadian snow goose down duvet. Can't wait...

hattymattie · 13/11/2012 18:46

I've persuaded DH to go for a down duvet - for us for christmas - quite fancy the egytian sheets to go with. wild are you using the same site as parentally? Can you review as I'm undecided whether to go for the Hungarian or really splurge on the same as you.

wildstrawberryplace · 13/11/2012 21:35

I've ordered this brand in 9 tog 100% Canadian snow goose down (we don't like much more toggage than that - house is very well insulated). It was actually cheaper than Amazon, and after my intensive research I decided that it was the best quality for the money I was prepared to spend.

I was tempted by the DAPW ultimate hungarian, but it's a jaquard cover rather than cambric, which affects the drape (cambric is crisper and lighter) and apparently it's not as stable over time. But it's a minor quibble.

wildstrawberryplace · 13/11/2012 21:41

Oh the duvet store - yes I was looking at the Siberian but was sort of put off by Mortimer's comments (backed up by much internet info) that "Siberian" is a bit of a gimmick.

On the site I linked to, I think the "entry level" 100% goose down are probably the ones available on the duvet store - spec is exactly the same, and they are both made in Scotland. Could be wrong though.

I expect that above a certain spec (cambric cover, nomite, purified down etc) any of the duvets will be really fab, esp if guaranteed for 15 years.

hattymattie · 14/11/2012 07:21

Thanks Wildstrawberry do come back and let us know if you're pleased. I'll probably go for the Ultimate Hungarian at the DAPW as a couple of people have it on here and are pleased -but I think I also will go down to 9 tog having found an old thread about people being too hot in their 13 tog duvets.

ceeveebee · 14/11/2012 07:44

I got a goose down duvet from house of Fraser in half price sale last year and it is divine. Was reduced from £210 to £105 I think. Will look at label tonight for brand name

MarshaBrady · 16/11/2012 11:02

Just bought a Hungarian goose down duvet. (two one for ds2 and one for us).

I like that it has a country of origin. But got to admit Snow Goose or Elder Duck sounds unbelievably good.

oldraver · 16/11/2012 11:35

Reastie I have a Goose Feather Down All Seasons and have only once used both together when we had all that snow and they were too warm. I also wash them at the laundrette (non-bio and NO conditioner), put them through the spinner (lady there showed me feather/down duvets can be squished into the spinner better than synthetic) and they dry in no time. They really fluff up well.

DS also had a wool duvet and OH had a silk one. They are a lot 'flatter' and solid than down and dont have the TOG rating on them. The wool one washed lovely as well

oldraver · 16/11/2012 11:45

wildstrawberry.. thats the same brand as mine which is now 12 years old and still in good condition.

Whoever mentioned tumble drying and does it shrink.... I have put DS's single one (House Of Fraser) in to fluff up and his wool one. and neither have shrunk. The better the duvet the better the cover usually a hard wearing cotton/cambric that is usually piped so doesnt shrink

daisydoodoo · 16/11/2012 11:51

I like the mcofibre one linked further up the thread. I am allergic to feathers so need manmade fibres but want something breathable. Has anyone actually got the one linked?

Thanks

oldraver · 16/11/2012 11:53

Daisydoo.... have you thought of a wool or silk duvet as they are breathable

NervyMcNervous · 16/11/2012 13:44

Daisy we got this one recently and it is good for synthetic - very light and fluffy and puffs up like down when you shake it, plus it settles around you like down so no drafts. Went for that one rather than the Homescapes because it was only a little bit more and some of the Homescapes reviews mentioned white fluff coming out of the duvets!

MousyMouse · 16/11/2012 16:54

the dc have these from ikea in 7.5 tog. they are very comfy (having to swap beds occasionally), wash very well. it's also available in 10.5 or 7.5 and 4.5 as summer winter combo.
