Posh hotel quality duvet?

I recently stayed in a very posh London hotel (courtesy of someone else!). I can't look at my duvet the same way since. It feels lumpy and patchy and deeply wanting in comparison. I didn't have the nerve to ask about the make and didn't have to nous to look at the time so am now left obsessing thinking about it somewhat.

I think it was down. I don't know [listless], can anyone recommend a nice plump soft duvet? I would push the boat out with regards to price as bed is my favouritest place in the world.

I've got hungarian goose down from Liberty. It is lovely and warm and very light so I wouldn't recommend that if you want a duvet that feels heavy.

well, substantial if not heavy. DH wouldn't tolerate anything too heavy as he gets too hot.

The order of quality is:

Duck/White Duck - lowest but still good
Goose (generic)
Hungarian/Canadian goose
Snow goose
Eider duck - absolute top whack clear your bank account and stay in bed for a week quality

But in every case it's the down to feather ratio that really affects the warmth and lightness, so check the down content %

I looked at a proper eider duck down duvet - but it was over £4000!

I got my duvet from DAPW. I think I got the ultimate Hungarian one. It is great and still looking good after 3 years. The prices are very decent too.

My mistake, it's actually £6000 for the super king size.

To be honest though, if it wasn't for DH and his unconfirmed feather allergy, I'd be tempted. Apparently they are the ultimate in comfort and luxury and last 15 years +

In the website photos, all the duvets look really flat.

The 2 best duvets I have slept under (both in Switzerland, one in a 5* hotel and one in a friends house) were both really light but thick.

I bought a 15 tog 100% Hungarian goose down duvet from an eBay store, it cost about £100, it has been the single best thing I have ever bought for myself. My DH on the other hand, prefers a heavier duvet so he has a duck down / feather duvet from John Lewis which can be split into a winter/summer duvet. We have 2 x double duvets on one King size bed, it means we're both happy and neither of us gets left with no duvet when it's cold!

Peach Soft from John Lewis £50 for a 10 tog and £55 for 13.5 tog (king). It is amazing. Incredibly light but so, so, so soft and snug. Also, invest in a thick mattress topper or put a duvet under bed sheet, adds another element of comfort.

Omg the hotel replied to my email! How lovely!
For anyone interested, the amazing duvet was by Snuggledown of Norway, specifications: 10.5 tog duvets which are 90% duck down and 10 % duck feather.

I am tickled pink :D

So, even with this information, I still need to go and roll around in a few in John Lewis and dunelm. I just can't imagine anything more comfortable than that at the hotel. [head explodes]

I know mrsrisotto! I don't know if this has been said but I've heard from several sources the John Lewis ?Siberian Goose down? (ie the v expensive ones from JL) are the best ever. I've never been able to justify the cost but maybe I should - my synthetic one from debenhams just isn't snug and cosy.

I second Rattitude's recommendation.

I also got the Ultimate Hungarian from DAPW and love it. It's very toasty but incredibly light and has survived a newborn co-sleeping/throwing up/leaky breasts (mine)

so I checked ut the label on our 7 or 8 year old duvet and it is 90% goose down and 10% goose feather, 10.5 tog
Waah! So why was the hotel one so much better? I don't like this stoopid duvet cos the stuffing never fills the edge whiney whiney whinge. I swear the label's lying.

I can't stand down or feather duvets, I don't like the way the feathers, etc settle down into and around you.

I've tried buying a new microfibre duvet but even new microfibre duvets seem to do this.

I love my 20 year old duvet but it really is past its best.

msrisotto when you take the cover off, does your current duvet have lines of stitching so it sits in vertical channels... or is it stitched in a check pattern?

Also they only have a 10 year life so if yours is 8 years old maybe it's just worn out a bit early..?
