Is having a continually wet bath mat just a boring fact of life - does yours dry out between uses?

We have towelling bath mats, and after two people standing on it in the morning, then two children standing on it in the evening, it never really dries out (especially now it's autumn). I hang it over the side of the bath. We have enough problems drying towels (one on radiator, one over the banisters etc..)
Does anyone have a good bath mat that works as an absorbent surface to make it safe to get out of bath, but that doesn't lie around in a wet heap?

free why do DHs get so much water everywhere? I just don't get it. I don't really dry myself before getting out but somehow the mat doesn't get that wet!

linspins · 30/10/2012 20:52

I think it's men in general who leave so much water about. That, and my kids slopping loads over the edge at bath time.
I think I'll just have to train the whole family to dry more before we get out.
Yes, URGH to stepping on to cold wet mat. Possibly I need to buy a few more too so we can change them every 2-3 days. Blimey, some things in life are such a faff.

Is your house cold?

I just hang bath mat over the side of the bath and it dries. Confused

I dry myself except my feet before stepping out but DS gets out then gets dried.

linspins · 30/10/2012 21:09

Yourhandinmyhand, I think it's more to do with the fact that it get wet morning and evening, so doesn't have 24 hrs to dry. But yes, bathroom is quite cold. Towel rail is toasty, but covered in damp towels.

Sometimes when my bath mat has been washed I hang it on one of those hangers with the 2 pegs on it (hope you get what I mean) and hang it from a door frame to dry. Maybe you could do this in a morning so it dries out during the day for the evening bath time?

StripyShoes · 30/10/2012 21:20

I don't have a bath mat. We just use a towel to stand on. Then hang with the other towels. I hate things left on the bathroom floor so it is always Hung up after use. A bath mat would annoy me LOL

noseynoonoo · 30/10/2012 21:23

DH (who is a hairy baboon) and I always give our bodies a rough dry and our feet a thorough dry before getting out of the bath or shower so we don't get the mat dress. The children get it a little wet but not too much. We hang it over the bath and it's never wet when we want to use it. I think you'll have to train the family to do their bit.

MrsJohnDeere · 30/10/2012 21:25

Mine dry between morning and evening, and our house is not at all warm. Don't dry before getting out of the bath either. I just hang the on the side of the bath during the day.

echt · 31/10/2012 09:10

We hang the bath mat up after use, but habitually plane water off with the palm of the hand, in the shower/bath, before getting out. Less soggy mat and towel.

MousyMouse · 31/10/2012 09:15

we have <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=<a class="break-all" href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41jNaLgN9qL.SX300.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.amazon.com/Better-Housewares-Bathtub-Drying-26-Inch/dp/B003DA5MX4&h=286&w=300&sz=11&tbnid=X40i8ANNtuzJ3M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=94&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddrying%2Brack%2Bbathtub%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=drying+rack+bathtub&usg=__aTZRm7VsbcaiFE7c4ohua4Nl4Ac=&docid=9oL-mILuzXdGgM&sa=X&ei=EeyQUOi_H_Sp0AXXrICIBw&ved=0CEQQ9QEwBQ&dur=750&surl=1"" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41jNaLgN9qL.SX300.jpg&imgrefurl=www.amazon.com/Better-Housewares-Bathtub-Drying-26-Inch/dp/B003DA5MX4&h=286&w=300&sz=11&tbnid=X40i8ANNtuzJ3M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=94&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddrying%2Brack%2Bbathtub%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=drying+rack+bathtub&usg=__aTZRm7VsbcaiFE7c4ohua4Nl4Ac=&docid=9oL-mILuzXdGgM&sa=X&ei=EeyQUOi_H_Sp0AXXrICIBw&ved=0CEQQ9QEwBQ&dur=750&surl=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">something like this over the bathtub where we hang the mat over after bath/shower.

FourArms · 01/11/2012 07:12

We have Ikea rag rugs as bath mats - seem to dry fine.

Bonsoir · 01/11/2012 07:15

Learning to use the bathroom without soaking everything within it is an advanced life skill Wink

wordfactory · 01/11/2012 08:30

Oh this is so an issue for us.

Everyone in Casa Wordfactory is used to having their own bathroom with shower cubicle. But we now spend some of our week in our London flat. The footfall in the one bathroom (!) is emmense. And the shower is in the bath and only has one of those wrap around screens.

The floor and mats after the morning rush hour are minging.

zillyzilly · 01/11/2012 08:31

Minging here too.

AitchDee · 01/11/2012 08:38

We don't use bath mats. When we have a bath or shower, we put a hand towel on the floor to stand on. It then gets washed after use.

But we are an unusual family who only ever uses towels once before washing so don't mind extra laundry.

linspins · 01/11/2012 18:11

Aitchdee, you must be continually washing!! Yikes.

OP posts:
AitchDee · 01/11/2012 18:28

Well the washing machine does the work. It only takes a few seconds to how everything in.

Mamf74 · 02/11/2012 12:36

We had a rubber backed one and it never dried, I think the rubber stopped air going through it or something so we just left it over the side of the bath to air. We kept using them as we had laminate in the bedroom and it was too slippy not to have things on the floor.

Now we've done the bathroom and have non slip tiles we have a bathmat that's like a normal towel and that dries so efficiently and quickly it's lovely!

ooer · 04/11/2012 20:15

All our bathmats are just made of towelling - no thick pile or rubber backing.

Also we open the window straight after a bath so the moistness leaves the air.

Bathmat hangs over the side of the bath and is soon dry.

Meglet · 04/11/2012 20:18

I use small towels and wash them every day. Bath mats never dried out.

Using towels means I can wipe the bath, sink and floor down afterwards.

EIizaDay · 06/11/2012 10:19

OP I think you need to buy some toweling bath mats. That's all I use (but I don't think I bought any of them in the UK so can't recommend anywhere).

I don't like traditional bath mats as they're too thick. Toweling ones are great as you just wash them with towels. Clean one every few days, much more hygienic and no damp in the bathroom.

EIizaDay · 06/11/2012 10:29

OP I've just had a rake in my bath mat cupboard. Looks like they are mostly Esprit ones. Just had a look on their website and all they have just now are ones with their logos on them. The other ones I have are IKEA (but they aren't so good). It is quite weird that it's difficult to find these toweling bath mats. They really are the dogs bollox.

mawbroon · 06/11/2012 10:30

I hate soggy bathmats, so did away with them years ago in favour of a duckboard.

But, we mostly dry before stepping out so there isn't a lot of water dripping on it.

InNeedOfAPennyForTheGuysBrandy · 06/11/2012 10:34

I have toweling bath mats and it dries out fine. I roughly dry myself including feet before I step out onto mat and I put down a towel on top of the mat when the dc have their bath.

EIizaDay · 06/11/2012 10:35

I'VE FOUND YOU ONE!!! www.johnlewis.com/111443/Product.aspx

Great colours and it's Johnnies so it's bound to be okay.

Funny how they are much cheaper than 'traditional' bath mats. They are so, so much better.
