If poo got into your duplo box what would you do?

As the title suggests, some poo got into the duplo box (DH's fault). I've wiped the poo off where I could see it, but would like to a more thorough clean.

Should I:

a) put it in a laundry bag and then in the washing machine with a towel

b) put it in a laundry bag and then in the dishwasher or

c) chuck it in a vat of milton (which I'm worried about leaving any bits of sterilised poo that I've missed still on the duplo)

Surely I'm not the only one who's had a poo situation in the duplo box! What's the standard solution?

Really imnotmymum and Floggingmolly, you'd bin something hard plastic (i.e. non-porous) rather than wash it?

What are you going to do when your Dc starts toilet training and has accidents on the carpet/sofa?

Why is it worse because it's been there 2 weeks? (genuinely have no idea why that makes it worse)

imnotmymum · 26/09/2012 11:01

Seriously I did not do poo covered stuff and having raised four children they never pooed on my carpet????

Startailoforangeandgold · 26/09/2012 11:03

Duplo is impervious plastic, a quick swill in a hot soapy bath will suffice. Rinse and put to drain.

Rockyolive · 26/09/2012 11:06

Believe it or not, you are not the only one! My son climbed into the box during early potty training. I showered the box and pieces, gave the box a really good clean then filled it with soapy water and put all the pieces into soak, then gave the pieces a really good clean but a few at a time as I couldn't face doing the lot at once. However, in your case, if they have been sitting for weeks, I would honestly just throw them away.

comelywench · 26/09/2012 11:08

I removed all visible poo before we went, but DS got a last minute date for surgery and I was in a bit of a flap and forgot about it till we were on the way. Hospital is over 200 miles from home.

I probably should've dealt with it straight away, but I was paralysed by indecision slattern

With hindsight I should've given it to MIL and said "there's poo in here, but I've not had time to deal with it due to DS's admission" She'd have sorted it no probs - she's a domestic goddess. Poor MIL I think she's horrified enough already at my house keeping standards without finding out about "duplo poo-gate"

Lucky you imnotmymum, DS2 took ages to train and pooed everywhere regularly until he was 5!

My dad still complains about a friend of mine who did it on his sofa when we were 3 (so I know I'm not the only one who went through it)

trikken · 26/09/2012 11:23

bin would be my option but i am a bit of a poo a phobe since ds who used to wipe the walls, floor and sides of his bedroom with poo on regular occasions.

delphie · 26/09/2012 11:31

please just chuck it out - life too short to be figuring out how disinfect duplo. if it was a treasured teddy - yes of course
but little bits of plastic - no just bin it

Floggingmolly · 26/09/2012 11:31

No, Ferrybridge, I would wash it. But I wouldn't leave it for two weeks before washing it,
that's the grim part.

Floggingmolly · 26/09/2012 11:31

It'll be like concrete by now...

Ferrybridge · 26/09/2012 11:45

Hmm, it will be like concrete, but it will soon soften up in the washing machine Grin I still don't see why that makes it more grim, it will have started composting by now which makes it less grim!

Duplo's really expensive. Would you never consider buying 2nd hand? Ooh OP, maybe selling it's an option? Grin

comelywench · 26/09/2012 13:50

Look I'm pretty sure there's no "poo" left in the box. It's had it's initial wipe clean. I just want to do a "deep" clean to make sure it's really poo-free. I bravely had a sniff in the container and it smells of duplo rather than poo in there.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have decided to put it in a laundry bag and put it in the washing machine (with bio power - thanks for that detail, I wouldn't have thought of that Blush) I will then milton it and the box it lives in for good measure.

This happens to me at least 3 times a week.

You throw all the blocks in the bath, run the water, swish it about with your usual bubble bath (anything soapy at all will do) or some fairy (or stardrops, if you know it). If you're using bubbles you can throw the offending toddler in too you see...

Swish the whole lot around, pick out the blocks one by one, checking what needs a tootbrushing, in the bucket of stronger solution you have before you.

Put clean blocks into a clean single duvet cover (or pillow case if you have less blocks than us). When it's full tie the top and hang it on the line/ in the shed/ over the bath, from one of the windows (hanging inside is fine, the drips can be caught with a towel) or on the airing cupboard and give it a shake when you walk past. This is where a single duvet cover is great, because it wraps round stuff better. After a couple of days it'll be fine to put back in circulation.

Of course you could find somewhere to stand each block to drain, like plates you haven't time to dry up. Then it'd be ok in however long it takes plates to dry... But I find having to wait for the blocks to dry for 2 days gives my toddler something to think about.

SaffronCake · 26/09/2012 14:08

I don't find ssterilising neccessary. Really. Poo is only dirty if it's left on something. You don't sterilise your hands after wiping your bottom... Well some people do I suppose... Drs will tell you soap is adequate.

Charltonangel · 26/09/2012 14:21

Bung it in the bath with some washing up liquid and then rinse it with the shower. It's poo, not nuclear waste Grin

DisorderlyNights · 26/09/2012 14:23

You can't see poo.
You can't smell poo.
Why bother washing it?

PoppadomPreach · 26/09/2012 14:25

Bath + Milton + gloves + scrubbing brush/old toothbrush. Repeat until fade.

PLEASE don't put it anywhere near your dishwasher

mumnosGOLDisbest · 26/09/2012 14:30

In a pillowcase, knot it then in the washer. We do this at school with lego, cotton reels etc.

Badjudgeofcharacter · 26/09/2012 14:33

Washing machine low temperature with bleach 2x washes

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/09/2012 14:35

DW or washing machine; put the applicance on an empty hot wash after to clean it.

justilou · 26/09/2012 15:04

I like the toothbrush suggestion. DH's one looks perfect!

If you've already wiped it then I'd put it in the dishwasher.

MsOnatopp · 26/09/2012 16:00

Another washing machine fan here.

NobodySaidItWasGoingToBeEasy · 26/09/2012 16:05

When our Duplo box was full of wee I put the Duplo in an old pillow case in the washing machine.
