Storage solutions...

sillyily · 09/09/2012 18:51

Moving house soon and my new house resolution is for everything to have a place, and to be able to find everything easily.
What storage solutions have you all seen that have made your life easier? Am thinking I need somewhere for recycling, something for under the sink for housekeeping stuff, toys in playroom (prob just use plastic boxes on shelves...) as well as everything else in the house... I have a budget of £300 overall for storage so anything you think might make my life a bit easier, that doesn't cost the earth, please share ;-)

I have just done this and it is blissful to finally live with a home for everything. Good luck!

The idea trofast is genius for toys

Trofast looks good for playroom definitely. And kids height so they cAn help themselves Grin

Each child has a basket just inside the front door, into which they throw their shoes, coat, and school bags when they come in. (They have the option to hang their coats on a peg but they tend not to!)

I have really deep kitchen cupboards, so I have food stored in plastic crates inside the cupboards, so I can pull it out like a drawer.

I gave up sorting and hanging up the boys clothes. They each have a chest of drawers with really deep drawers. One drawer for pjs, pants and socks, one drawer for school uniform and one drawer for every other item of clothing they own. It means they can put away their own laundry and find their own stuff later.

But the best thing for storage is to THROW LOADS OF STUFF OUT. Nothing else works like it ...

watching thread!!

BerthaTheBogBurglar · 09/09/2012 20:03

Oh, and a Lakeland Bakeware Organiser, you need one of those! (you need most of Lakeland Grin)

sillyily · 09/09/2012 20:37

I try not to go in Lakeland cos I spend too much Blush
The baskets in the hall is a good idea Grin

I have already got rid of sooo much, but still left with loads. I really don't know what I'm left with- but there is always mess Sad we are havin an organised loft in new house, with clear boxes and colour coded stickers, so lots of the crap I can't part with is going up there anyway Smile

High shelf in hall, baskets for little used ruck sacks, very thick gloves and hats, everyday gloves and sun hats.

I lift down only the box appropriate for the weather.

Proper cube shoe rack Ikea, but sadly not still sold.

Custom storage built by DH for wellies and walking boots. Unfortunately his huge wellies don't fit. Size 11 wellies don't fit anywhere in our hallAngry

As many coat hooks as will fit at various heights.

Argos pine cubes with plastic boxes for toys.

Shelves in wasted space above wardrobe hanging rail.

Billy book cases every where.

sillyily · 09/09/2012 21:08

The wardrobe idea is a good 'un!
Dp is size 11 too, and his shoes won't fit into a standard shoe storage Angry so they stay under the bed Grin

I second the Lakeland bake ware organiser, it is fantastic.

We have an Ikea very close by so a lot of my stuff is from there. We have Trofast in the playroom, as it is a converted double garage I gave a 4m run of Pax wardrobes that house coats, hats, shoes, tv & wii, hoover, ironing board, ironing pile etc

I have plastic tubs under the sink holding tea towels, hand towels, cloths, & I am slowly sorting this house out.

I measured every space then spent a good while finding plastic tubs to fit those spaces. My last house was completely organised, like OCD organised. I am determined to do the same here

sillyily · 11/09/2012 09:59

OCD is generally the way I want to be heading Grin
My parents are giving us their old pax wardrobe to put in ds's room which will mostly be used for storing DVDs/games etc so theyr not on show in the lounge. Nearest ikea is an hour away so got to get everything at once. Nearest Lakeland is about half hour away so likewise. Thanks for ideas so far! Keep them coming! Grin

For recycling I have got two of waitrose's shopping bags which I keep in my kitchen as too lazy to go outside with every cardboard box . They are the big green ones (though might get a smaller one two), you see the baby boomers pushing them in their trolleys in waitrose. Just ask at customer service, about 3 pounds each. They are great, they are fairly sturdy even when empty, they aren't too big, and look as if you have just got back from Waitrose! Dd2 especially pleased that all her junk modeling materials are in one place grrrrr!

SapphireandFevertree · 11/09/2012 10:26

I've got a set of wire basket shelves that hang over the back of the door in the kitchen where I keep all the ingredients I use most frequently allong with cling film tin foil etc. that was from Lakeland.

Another really good site is aplaceforeverything
The best things I've got from there are baskets that attach inside your cupboard doors, essentially giving you an extra shelf.

sillyily · 11/09/2012 13:14

Dont have a waitrose near me unfortunately :-(

If that website is as good as it sounds then you are my new best friend Grin

Unit in the hall that has doors so that baskets can be hidden away with sunhats, gloves, umbrellas etc.
Coat hooks at kids height so that they can hang them up.
Shoe rack for day to day shoes, hidden in a cupboard :).
Clear boxes for storing things so that you can see what is in them ( have one for dishwasher tablets and that is great ( no more forgotten boxes at the back of the cupboard ).
Hooks that go over doors so that you can hang things up like dressing gowns etc ....
Declutter on a regular basis and be ruthless. Get some scrap books for kids artwork and take pictures of the rest or frame the special ones ( note to self, must go into loft and sort out kids pictures).
I am trying to go through the house room by room at the moment and see what I can ditch, file, box etc, so far I have two big bags of clothes .

sillyily · 11/09/2012 20:35

Ok great, anyone have recommendations for decent shoe storage? Something that doesn't take up too much space preferably Grin

SapphireandFevertree · 11/09/2012 21:04

Sounds silly but shoe boxes! Allows them to be stacked in the bottom of a wardrobe without becoming damaged/loosing one.

sillyily · 11/09/2012 21:21

Doesn't that become faffy?! Haha! I need somewhere to shove stuff Wink

Unlike DH, I have nice small feet and can stuff several pairs of sadals in a big boot box and stick it under the chest of draws in winter.

DD2 has sorted all her playmobil into shoe boxes on to shelves made by DH.

Jux · 12/09/2012 00:01

I had a friend who owned literally hundreds of shoes and boots. She kept them stacked in their boxes. She took a photo of each pair when she bought them, printed it and stuck it on the end of the box, so she could find any pair quickly. I thought it was brilliant!

ceeveebee · 12/09/2012 00:13

I'm not quite as organised with my shoes but I do keep them all in original boxes and they are stored under my mattress - I have one of those beds that lifts up and lots of room for shoes, bedding, duvets

Vacpac bags are good. I store my winter clothes in vacuum bags and store in the loft. In fact I guess it's nearly time to do the swap.

I use wooden cutlery trays in my and DHs chest of drawers - mine has make up brushes, lip balm, deodorant etc in and his has men's things in (nail clippers, random keys etc)

I have a filing cabinet in the loft with all paperwork in suspended folders. Can do either by subject (car, bank etc) or year depending what suits. I shred stuff once a year.

MrsBovary · 12/09/2012 00:27

My favourite, and most useful, is a storage bench (from GLTC) in the hallway. Hats/gloves/scarfs within and shoe boxes with name stickers on the bottom shelf. That is for outdoor shoes. Coat hooks above.

Wellies are in a stand in the porch at the back of the house (waterproofs in named bags on door hooks there also), and indoor shoes/slippers are on a wooden rack in a cupboard under the stairs. My own shoes live in my wardrobe in boxes, I used to write a description on a sticker on the front of the boxes, but no longer bother.

Lego table in playroom, toy boxes in bedrooms, and named toy bags (cross stitched on - I like labels Blush )

Baskets in bathroom cupboard for toiletries.

sillyily · 13/09/2012 08:17

Most of my shoes are running trainers/celt boots/flip flops. I have about two or three pairs of heels so I doubt i would need all the shoe boxes! Probably will get something for the hall, which will also hold the baskets for the kids. I have a separate budget for furniture so that can count as furniture ;-)

Where is the shop just mentioned? (on phone so cant go back and can't remember name of it/name of poster - sorry!)
