What do you store your bread in?

I know that probably sounds like a silly question, but really, how do you store your bread?

We haven't used a bread bin for years, as we couldn't find one big enough to comfortably hold two loaves of bread. When we moved to our previous house, we had really limited counter-top space, so had a couple of bread bags from Lakeland, hanging up. Since we've moved, we now have a bit more space in the kitchen for a bread bin.

The bread bags were fine when they were kept in view, as even on days we didn't eat bread, the bags were in plain sight so I could check them daily and throw it out when it gets mouldy. We don't have the hanging space now so the bags are more out of sight, leading to manky discoveries of mouldy bread, and frequent bag washings (which put the bags out of use for a couple of days as they take ages to dry)

Any recommendations?

We use a deep drawer! Never intended to just, like you, have never found a suitable bread bin. But I quite like it - it works and stores loads

ggirl · 04/07/2012 16:44

In the freezer..but we don't use it that much...usually toast .

noisytoys · 04/07/2012 18:12

In the freezer too I buy loads of bread when it's on offer and defrost it as and when we need it

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 18:21

I keep mine on top of the bread bin Confused. I keep crackers and nuts and such things in the bread bin.....as you do Hmm.

I have a barbantia brushed s/steel bread bin. Its ok, nothing exciting, the nuts seem quite happy in there!

It doesn't hold 2 full loaves, probably 1.5, I can't really remember - you can stack 3 loaves on top though.

Jellykat · 04/07/2012 18:38

I too keep mine on top of the bread bin (don't know the make, but it was expensive and is bright yellow) and another loaf in the freezer..

Crumpets and jams etc are actually in the bread bin, don't ask me why Confused

In my belly. I loves bread, I does.

I'm getting a shiny new kitchen this year so need a pretty breadbin. Mine just sits on top of the toaster at the moment. But I broke my last toaster by being a muppet and putting the bread back on top when it was still hot and the plastic bag melted into it.

In the freezer.
We have an ikea bread bin which has crackers, biscuits & nuts in it.

Ok, so I'm guessing here that the consensus is I would be wasting my time looking for a bread bin, unless I need cracker storage?

Pretty much Grin

GnocchiNineDoors · 04/07/2012 20:05

Mine just sits on the side, in its wrapper.

It sed to sit ontop if the microwave but the cereals ousted it.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/07/2012 20:09

I keep mine on top of the breadbin too Grin

I've got one of those big enamel ones that look old but aren't. It keeps the bread fresh enough but makes the crusts go soft. I'm wondering if some sort of cloth-lined basket type thing might work better.

littlebluechair · 04/07/2012 20:12

I keep mine on a cooling rack on a tray on the worktop. It gets put on there to cool when it comes out of the machine and stays til finished or thrown. We get through a loaf in two days max so it's fine there. When it was hidden in a bread bin I used to forget about it, now it is out I use up any old bread in recipes so much less wastage

Astr0naut · 04/07/2012 20:16

We throw two loaves in the cupboard, then push all the herbs and spices and that back in when we open the cupboard doors.

There are mouldy bits of bread somewhere towards the back - generally the last slice, still in the bag.

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 20:36

I keep mine in the breadbin, I also have brabantia brushed steel one. Then I forget about it and it goes mouldy so I throw it out (I don't eat bread so buy it just for DH)

ooer · 04/07/2012 20:56

I used to have a wooden breadbin but it was impossible to clean and little beasties laid their eggs in the crevices Shock

My bread is in a brushed steel round tall tin on the worktop. Holds probably a loaf and a half (we bake our bread so it only usually gets one loaf at a time but we also fill it up with croissants, naan etc).

But the main thing about it is it easily washable!

I'm wondering why I'm the only poster to keep bread in the fridge? (No room here for cotton bag on wall).

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 23:20

I keep mine in the fridge sometimes when its really hot. I can't be bothered with the freezer because there is no room I never know when I will want bread. If I leave it out it goes mouldy within a day or two, so I compramise with the fridge. DB keeps his in the fridge all the time.

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 23:24

compromise. FFS, there is something very wrong with me tonight!

FootballFriendSays · 04/07/2012 23:25

How long does it keep in the fridge?

oreocrumbs · 04/07/2012 23:27

At least a week. (Never had any left past a week!). I should imagine quite a bit longer.

FootballFriendSays · 05/07/2012 06:34

A week is good. We wouldn't need it for any longer. As long as it at least keeps by its stated date.

PigeonPie · 05/07/2012 06:50

We use the big Lock and Lock bread box from Lakeland. It can hold two medium sized bread machine loaves and is easily washable. Not the prettiest of objects but does the job of keeping the bread fresh. Ours lives in the cupboard.

forevergreek · 05/07/2012 07:13

Apparently you shouldn't store I'm the fridge ( can't quiet remember why?)

We store in freezer as a loaf of bread lasts us a month or more

Bread goes stale faster in the fridge! Although in the cockroach house of my student days, stale bread was preferable to the alternative...

Now I live in a civilised house where cleaning is done and food isn't left on the floor for days (in other people's bedrooms!) I have a breadbin, which holds one and a bit loaves. Its like this except mine is black not red.
