What do you store your bread in?

I know that probably sounds like a silly question, but really, how do you store your bread?

We haven't used a bread bin for years, as we couldn't find one big enough to comfortably hold two loaves of bread. When we moved to our previous house, we had really limited counter-top space, so had a couple of bread bags from Lakeland, hanging up. Since we've moved, we now have a bit more space in the kitchen for a bread bin.

The bread bags were fine when they were kept in view, as even on days we didn't eat bread, the bags were in plain sight so I could check them daily and throw it out when it gets mouldy. We don't have the hanging space now so the bags are more out of sight, leading to manky discoveries of mouldy bread, and frequent bag washings (which put the bags out of use for a couple of days as they take ages to dry)

Any recommendations?

We have the tall rectangle (or oblong Confused) bread bin from Next, with matching Tea/Coffee/Sugar caddies, in black.

We only get small loaves but it can hold 2 small loaves, 2 packets of crumpets and 6 rolls. You could easily get 2 normal size loaves in it, side by side standing up on their ends.

I think they also do one in Argos now, but not sure whether you have to buy them as part of a set... (that query applies to both Next and Argos).

We keep our bread in the fridge and croissant/ french loaves in a bread basket. We also have a bread bin a bit like this www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&q=bread+bin&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1050&bih=598&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=15033755652358249840&sa=X&ei=fT31T-G9C4OChQe1p8nJBg&ved=0CH0Q8wIwBA
where crisps/nachos go if bought ( which is rarely)

We use an open top basket so you can see the bread. Got it from dunelm mill. You can easily fit two loaves in it.

I have just bought a huge bread bin, it's fantastic, fits three loaves in! I was so fed up trying to squash it all in my old one and ending up with it sat around the kitchen sides.

It's this one

I keep mine in the freezer and take it out slice by slice as required.

I've got an old enamel bread bin that used to belong to my Gran.

Its so much better than the modern ones as its a decent size - a tall, rectangular shape that you can easily fit 2 loaves and a pack of croissant, rolls etc in.

We also have a modern bread bin but its completely the wrong size and dimensions for bread so gets used for packets of crisps!

i have one like this but mine has a nice green floral print on debenhams

It fits in two full size loaves - stood on their ends, and can often squeeze in a pack of pittas and rolls too.

We get through a lot of bread in this house(teenage DSs)

Can I ask a daft question? What's a bread basket, is it literally just a basket with a lid? And if so, doesn't the bread go hard really quickly Hmm - I tend to just keep a loaf wrapped in its plastic bag, and if I don't wrap the end properly it has gone stale by next morning! Home made bread is usually gone as soon as its cooled enough to eat so no worries about storing that Smile

Pipsqueak99 · 05/07/2012 11:46

I keep it in an old terracotta bread crock. It's fantastic - keeps the bread really fresh for a long time (far longer than anything I've used previously) :)

funnyperson · 05/07/2012 15:48

awimbaway doesnt the bread go mouldy?

maryjanell79 · 05/07/2012 17:10

I always store mine in the freezer otherwise I end up throwing what is left of the loaf out when it gets mouldy! I hate being wasteful

AWimbaWay · 08/07/2012 18:47

We get through bread so fast in our house it doesn't get chance to go mouldy. But I don't normally store three loaves in, normally home-made loaf, shop bought sliced loaf, pack of bagels or croissants etc,

UntamedShrew · 08/07/2012 18:49

A huge enamel bread bin with a lid - looks a bit retro. Holds 2 loaves, plus crumpets & croissants. We are a carb-loving family Grin
I bought it in a local kitchen shop.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/07/2012 18:57

So, has anybody found something that keeps a loaf fresh without making the crust go soft?

AWimbaWay · 08/07/2012 19:23

UntamedShrew, it's not the one I linked to above is it, sounds similar!

Shoshe · 08/07/2012 19:42

in this holds a machine loaf and DH's rolls.
