Shoes all over the house, where do you keep shoes ?

budgieshell · 13/06/2012 21:53

We are a family of 4 and have what I would guess is an average amount of shoes.
They are every where, kitchen, bedrooms (wardrobe, underbed and side of bed) and a pile by the front door.
I have had fancy shoe boxes, a storage thing from argos and big plastic tubs.
Looked at ikea but they just don't hold enough.
So my question is how do you do it ?
Which rooms ?
What kind of storage system ?
And will your family put them away?

Big baskets are good to lob shoes into from a distance - in a corner means that it si hard to miss when throwing them. Otherwise under beds, plus a pile of mucky ones in the porch.

AdoraBell · 14/06/2012 04:05

Cupboard in the hall, plus 1 pair each by the door. That's theory anyway, but I have children see, so it all goes to pot when they get in from schoolConfused

GnocchiNineDoors · 14/06/2012 05:26

Bottom of out wardrobes but dh thinks his shoes live where ever he discards them (usually in the muddle of the room) and I have a tendancy to kick mine off and under the coffee table.

Dd is 6mo so doesnt have any shoes yet

OhNoMyFanjo · 14/06/2012 05:44

In the porch, no shoes are worn in the shoe, tgat way they can't go travelling Wink

KatyMac · 14/06/2012 05:48

Shelved cupboard in the hall in theory

Anywhere they are taken off in practise

We have WAY to many shoes (DD has 5 for her hobby alone)

DonInKillerHeels · 14/06/2012 06:18

A HUGE plastic box with a lid by the front door. Shoes get chucked in there and then we fish around for the pairs when we want to put them on again. Might not suit everyone, but it gets all shoes tidied out of the way very quickly and efficiently, and takes up much less space than shoeracks and shelving.

Ploom · 14/06/2012 08:11

We bought something like this from German ebay. It makes it so much tidier cause the shoes are all hidden away. We just keep shoes in that we wear regularly - all other ones like winter boots etc are in the basement.

Ploom · 14/06/2012 08:12

Just checked they've got them on the Uk ebay site too. (I live in Germany so the german ebay site came up first).

Righteousdude · 14/06/2012 08:17

We've got a Billy bookcase from Ikea with a door. Mine and the dc's fit lebgthways and we can fit in loads. Big foot dp's have to go sideways. The door hides the horror lurking within

Buntingbunny · 14/06/2012 08:22

There is a bench with holes in the hall and a box for wellies, I have a tall narrow cupboard from Argos in the bed room.

Escapees in owners bedrooms.

Unfortunately everyone sits on sofa and kicks off shoes Angry

Shangers · 14/06/2012 08:27

We have three ikea shoe holders that are stacked up (two on one side and one on the other) by the front door - this works cos everyone takes their shoes off as soon as they walk in (pretty much the only Chinese habit that we have adopted!) - I keep out of season shoes in a box upstairs and swap when the weather changes. I like having them all in one place and it means people don't put them on until they actually have to leave and the floors stay cleaner!

like this but with separate compartments (and flip flops between between the two and under the bottom too) www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10152658/

Acumenoop · 14/06/2012 08:29

In a basket by the front door next to a basket of slippers.

Jux · 14/06/2012 08:34

I use a small, backless, wooden bookcase, in the hall. The shelves are great for shoes, and I keep scarves and gloves on the top two shelves.

Thumbwitch · 14/06/2012 08:37

DS's shoes all go in a big basket by the main door. DH leaves his either outside or under the bed; I have mine either under the bed or under the chair or hatstand by the main door. DH is far and away the messiest with shoes, and the most impossible to change although if he ever does find a biting spider in one of his shoes outside, it might change his mind

bugster · 14/06/2012 08:37

Shoes stress me out no end. We have a no shoes in the house policy, so they are all taken off by the front door and if they are reasonably clean should then be put on the bottom 2 shelves of our hall wardrobe, but in practise the two shelves aren't big enough, and noone can be bothered to put them away anyway. Really need a different kind of cupboard/ wardrobe but it's too huge to go upstairs and my husband doesn't want to get rid of it.

In fact I would love to get rid of all our downstairs furniture, which suited our old apartment but doesn't look right in our house. But since our DCs are still at the age when they are liable to mess up good furniture, I may have to wait another 10 years.

(sigh).

Kellamity · 14/06/2012 08:38

Wellies and snow boots in the garage. Flip flops/crocs in a basket by the back door. School shoes on a shoe rack in the hall. I tend to keep mine in my wardrobe except for a couple of seasonal pairs I wear frequently. But alas no my DC's still don't put them away and part of my daily to do's is chasing shoes around the house Angry

orangeandlemons · 14/06/2012 08:41

Don't do wha twe did. Ds built some huge cupboards into the kitchen for coats etc. There is a huge space at the bottom for shoes, about 10ft x 3. Everyone just kicks their shoes off into it.

It's overflowing all the time. Once when I cleared it out I counted 74 pairs shoes/boots/trainers. There were 6 of us at the time. It was a bloody nightmare. Down to 4 now, but still packed to bursting and can't ever find a matched pair. I clear it outevery 6 weeks, but it's full again a week later.....and we thought it was such an inspired idea in the first place Hmm

Rabid · 14/06/2012 08:42

Garage

SpagboLagain · 14/06/2012 08:50

A very cheap low shelving unit in the porch. The sort Of thing you buy for garage storage, in pine. That's for everyday dirty shoes.

Smart/work shoes in the wardrobes

swollowmeup · 15/06/2012 13:50

IMO Dcs r too lazy to do anything but chuck into a box by the door and you're lucky if they remember that! Angry We have on occasion 24 feet in our family they all have at least 3 pairs of shoes! So big wooden chest with lid by the front door is best! Smile

bumbez · 15/06/2012 13:55

Shoes are the bane of my life- we have a tall ikea cabinet fo them. But no one in my family of 4 including me bothers to put them away.

Since the arrival of our puppy they could be anywhere, but most often in the dog basket slightly chewed!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 15/06/2012 13:59

Us too! I think Dons plastic box sounds like an ideal if ugly solution! we have next to no space in the hall though...I wonder if I could nail the box to the wall? Grin

rookery · 15/06/2012 14:04

Same as SpagboLagain - an Argos 5 shelf shoe rack right inside the front door. Cost about £12. Pine and you can paint it. Yes, we all use it - I think because we don't have to open a door or lift a lid. Top shelf has baskets for gloves, scarves, hats (winter), or suncream and hats in summer. Makes me sound WAY more organised than I am but we hardly ever have to go shoe-hunting. And I keep my going-out shoes somewhere else.

orienteerer · 15/06/2012 14:06

Another vote for 'Billy' bookcase from Ikea, works a treat.

Dillydollydaydream · 15/06/2012 14:12

We have most of them on a shoe rack in cupboard understairs but theres about 6 pairs in the hallway, a pair or two in the kitchen by the back door and some in bedrooms too. I We obviously have too many shoes.
