Is it best to wash towels only (ie dont chuck in anything else) and same with bedding? I often have 3 or 4 items of clothing and never put them in with towels or bedding and wait till I have a full load....

I don't put things in with them either - because I think they get trapped in the sheets and don't get clean properly.

No idea if you are meant to or not though!

CointreauVersial · 11/06/2012 12:54

I chuck everything together; having said that, our duvet cover plus sheets just about fills the machine, so that usually gets done on its own.

imnotmymum · 11/06/2012 12:56

why would you not put stuff in together I am confused and am thinking that perhaps my washing has been all wrongly done over the years. That said in our house there is always washing so I cannot be too fussy.

ceeveebee · 11/06/2012 12:59

I put towels in seperately as on a hotter temperature than usual 40 degrees. Bedding usually seperate just because it takes a full washload but will chuck some other small items in if they fit.

Seona1973 · 11/06/2012 13:00

I put towels in by themselves but only because they fill the whole machine and there isnt space for anything else. I try to do them on a 60 degree wash as well which wouldnt suit the other things as they get done at 40 degrees.

CointreauVersial · 12/06/2012 13:30

Oooh, why do you do towels at 60 degrees??

SleepyFergus · 12/06/2012 13:34

Yes, I tend to do a towel or bedding wash on their own as usually at higher temp of 60 degrees. I just feel at that temp it properly kills bacteria (sounds like my towels and bedding are minging!).

I'll chuck in tea towels, dishcloths too if they are hanging about.

BumpingFuglies · 12/06/2012 13:36

I always do towels separately, but it's always a full load. I do white ones at 95 and coloured at 60. White flannels go in with the white towels, teatowels and cloths with the other coloured towels.

gymboywalton · 12/06/2012 13:38

yes
toewls get washed on either 60 or 95 and sheets etc on 60

needs a good hot wash to kill dustmites

Mintyy · 12/06/2012 13:40

Always wash bedding and towels separately at 60 degrees. Let's face it, in the average family, you are not going to have to wait days to "make up a load" of other things to go on 40 degree washes.

MousyMouse · 12/06/2012 13:42

I also wash towels and bedding separately. mainly because the bedding is one whole load and with the towels I also throw in kitchen cloths and sponges, so do a hot wash.

BertieBotts · 12/06/2012 13:48

If you do a wash load which is just towels or other particularly absorbant fabrics, did you know you should under-fill it, as otherwise they absorb lots of water and the weight will damage your washing machine eventually.

I do towels at 60 because this also includes tea towels and washing up cloths which get gross.

BertieBotts · 12/06/2012 13:50

60 is the lowest temperature which will kill bacteria, BTW. Anything like face cloths and dishcloths which smell after a few uses will have bacteria on. Normal towels don't really need it but it helps if you have any infectious things going around like coldsores, verrucas, ringworm etc.

imnotmymum · 12/06/2012 14:45

But if you wash bedding/ towels regularly then surely not 60 required ?? We have clean towels after every shower/bath.

Seona1973 · 12/06/2012 15:56

I couldnt have clean towels after every shower/bath as I'd then end up with a towel mountain (have 2 showers a day 3 days a week due to going to exercise classes plus dh plays football twice a week and showers after that too). Towels are hung up after a shower and then get changed when they get too wet to be effective.

imnotmymum · 12/06/2012 16:04

just put a wash on each night ! There are six of us all sweaty betties which equates to 10 towels-wash/dry job done.

Seona1973 · 12/06/2012 19:26

I do several washes a day as it is and dont have a tumble dryer so would have to wait for them all to dry and dont have enough space so I will stick to what I do - I'm saving energy too!

CointreauVersial · 13/06/2012 00:12

You wash towels after every use?

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 13/06/2012 00:18

I wash towels together and on hot...we wash a silly amount of them really but I can't bear used towels. Sheets though, I will put in with other things.

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 13/06/2012 00:20

Cointreau I can't bear to think of the family's arses and armpits on a towel and then hanging it up again...it would be MY unsuspecting face that got dried right where DH had patted his arse dry.

ceeveebee · 13/06/2012 00:21

But surely towels are only used on clean armpits and arses? I wash mine weekly and now am wondering if I am a slattern!

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 13/06/2012 00:30

Meh....an arsehole is an arsehole.

Seona1973 · 13/06/2012 08:00

we have our own towels so it would only be my arse or armpit that had been in contact with it - I'm ok with that as I clean them all thoroughly in the shower!

BertieBotts · 13/06/2012 08:08

So do you shove the towel up your arsehole then? Because mine only really touches bum cheeks. Nothing offensive about that.

ceeveebee · 13/06/2012 09:07

This started as such an innocent thread and now we're talking about shoving towels up arseholes, is it Friday already??
