my tumble dryer died a noisy death tonight (i know i know)
i have a small garden and i really don't want a washing line/rotary dryer but was thinking of getting a plastic clothes horse and finding somewhere in the garden for it to stand
does anyone do this and does it work

thanks

I have two clothes airers but dont use them outside. I have a rotary airer outside that has been well used over the last few days! freestanding rotary airer is half price

I have this and something like this in a spare room upstairs and dry all out clothes on them. I dont use a tumble drier unless it is an emergency e.g. multiple puking/bed wetting incidents!

brighthair · 29/05/2012 15:17

I have two - no space for tumble dryer and not allowed to dry clothes in the garden Angry

AdoraBell · 29/05/2012 16:23

Yes, in the winter- as in nowGrin, the fog is just beginning to lift here at nearly 11.30 am and the air is too wet for anything to dry outside.

marriednotdead · 29/05/2012 16:40

I have two of these from Ikea. When I use them outside I weigh them down (with half a bag of sand).

Rainydayagain · 29/05/2012 16:44

Three airers and a long washing line.

Using a drier in this heat...lost for words.

I live on the moors so am quite experienced in wind managment :-) a very large rock will secure the bottom of your airer ( if you buy a pull up type) and pegs as mentioned before.

Clothes do not dry as fast as a line but if the clouds arrive you can drag it in.

Underwear and socks on those special old lady peg things ( seems i now am one)

startail · 29/05/2012 16:56

What an earth did zendaya manage to say in the exciting subject of cloth horses that got deleatedConfused

I use my two lot for underwear in doors, never got them to stay up outside.

Bonsoir · 29/05/2012 16:57

I have both a tumble dryer and a clothes horse. Both in conjunction are great, IMO. I tumble clothes until they are hot and steamy and then hang on hangers on the clothes horse - they barely need ironing.

comixminx · 29/05/2012 17:02

I have a couple of clothes horses and use them regularly, but to be honest having just moved into a house that has a good length of washing line I am finding that the line is much quicker at drying clothes. What's the issue you have with clothes lines?

FreeButtonBee · 29/05/2012 17:08

Yes, no tumble dryer and a v short line (and we are out of the house 12 hours a day). TBH, I've never had a tumble dryer as an adult and even my mum (4 kids) only uses hers for emergencies and to dry things that get a skiff of rain. The rest are put on a clothes horse too. It lives in the spare room (which is a pain if we have guests as no washing can be done til they leave!)

What I also have is a rail in the airing cupboard, it's quite high up (Victorian flat so high ceilings even in the airing cupboard) and it's perfect for drying shirts/dresses/blouses etc on hangers so they are less creased. Holds about 10 hangers. It was there when we moved it but it's a great idea and means that there is less stuff cluttering up the rest of the house.

BiddyPop · 29/05/2012 17:14

I use a large one mostly indoors but we bring it outdoors if already fully loaded and the sun comes out. I'd often use pegs on small stuff if going outdoors.

You could have the clothes horse (great cos it can move to sunny kitchen in daytimes, outdoors when we're there to rescue from showers, and into the sitting room when we go to bed and benefit from heat from open fire), but also get a retractable line for larger things like sheets perhaps. Or rotary line is great too (we have the base concreted into the gravelled area in the back garden, but can take it out when we want the space).

albertswearengen · 29/05/2012 17:36

We have a pulley in the utility and a Brabantia retractable thing like this outside which is so neat.

I used to have multiple clothes horses which I moved around the house depending where it was sunny . I hate using the tumble drier it's so noisy and expensive.

PostBellumBugsy · 29/05/2012 17:39

I have a clothes horse that I use all the time & an airing cupboard. Never use a tumble dryer. In the summer my laundry goes out on the line. On Sunday, it was so hot outside that I turned around 4 loads of laundry in one day!!!

Nanny0gg · 29/05/2012 18:34

I love Lakeland's heated airer for the winter as everything dries overnight.
Tumble drier for towels for fluffiness and underwear cos they look like new.
But nothing beats the smell of clothes/linen dried outside.

insancerre · 29/05/2012 18:44

I use mine every day. It lives on the landing as everything seems to dry qiickest there.
I have no tumble dryer and no clothes line either. I also have a hanging rail that I hang stuff on hangers to dry too.

out2lunch · 30/05/2012 22:16

LoopyLoopsCorgiPoops · 30/05/2012 23:54

(disclaimer - DH does all that kind of stuff. I've never even touched the new (er, nearly a year old0 washing machine...)

definitely think about the dryline though. Amazing.

WWYB · 31/05/2012 00:00

I have several of these Minky airers and I think they are excellent and they fold up nice and small to store.

takingiteasy · 31/05/2012 11:32

I use it indoors pretty much all year round, I have 2 on the go in the winter! I've tried putting it outside before, like when it's been rainy in the morning and brightened up, but they either fall over or the bloody dog pees on it!

Outside I've got a retractable line. I do have proper clothesline poles (3) in the garden but what with a summer house, trampoline etc we found it was cutting off to much of the garden. I've got a retractable line at the back door and it attaches to the summer house so I get a nice long straight line. I don't like rotary driers.
